We're Having a Super September!

If you want to find out about membership, click here, and see Deacon Martha Saenz, Membership Chair, at church on Sunday.

It is hard to believe that Autumn is upon us...and yet, this Wednesday, we will honor the change of the seasons...when light and dark are in balance...when we can explore what in our lives needs to be in balance...and how we an prepare our inner selves for the coming winter months ahead.

This past weekend, our friend, Rev. Karen Rose Slember from our sister church ISD-Sparta, N.J., had to postpone her highly-anticipated trip to D.C. because of a family emergency. We send Karen and her family peace and healing during this difficult time. And I thank all of you for your flexibility and understanding in our having to cancel our events that Karen was scheduled to lead on Friday and Saturday. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

Our dedicated teams of ushers, class registrars and service coordinators met this past Sunday to review and discuss some of our protocol and procedures for these roles. I was thrilled to experience such a lively, energized and enthusiastic group that, individually and together, work hard to ensure that our members, congregants, and class attendees have a welcoming experience at our services and classes. My thanks to Rev. Sherry Foor, Team Leader of the ushers, and Michelle Loy, ISD's finance manager, for their efforts in organizing and conducing our gathering, and to our dedicated ushers, registers and service coordinators for their ongoing service to ISD!

In case you missed it, empanadas have been in the news in the last week! Not just in our recent announcement of ISD's most delicious fundraising event for the year, but as part of the Pope's visit to the U.S.! That's right, when he was given a gift of frozen empanadas by a journalist on the flight from Miami to Cuba, Pope Francis had them thawed, heated and distributed to all of the reporters on the flight! Pope Francis is from Argentina, and so is Ina Russell, our beloved friend who hand crafts these little pockets of heaven. What more of a sign do you need to place your order today? They are just $2.50 each and freeze well (just ask the reporters on that flight from Miami to Cuba!), so you can stock up for all of your upcoming holiday entertaining. Check out our empanadas web page, order via paypal or download the order form and return to Rev. Patricia Makin or Rev. Olivia Hunter on Sunday before or after service. Order deadline is October 4, with delivery to ISD on Sunday, October 18.

Tonight at 7:30 p.m., we continue with a very special and fascinating class about the mysterious Jewish sect called the Essenes! Thanks to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the secrets of this spiritual brotherhood have been revealed, including the fact that many of the founders of what would be considered Christianity, were part of the Essenes. This will be the second of three classes on this course.

Plan on celebrating the change of seasons during our Autumnal Equinox Service, on September 23 at 7:30 p.m. This is a special time to reflect on where we have been and plan for the coming transition into the winter season.

Thursday, September 24 at 7:30 p.m. we conclude our series on The Five Agreements to Create Love and Happiness, led by the wonderful Reverends Ken and Sherry Foor. Not only will they discuss the two "Agreement" books of don Miguel Ruiz, but they will offer real life application of these principles and offer insight into how we integrate them into our lives.

On Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., we kick off this fall's Practical Reiki Certification program, led by Alice Langholt, who will hold her Practical Reiki Level One Certification Workshop. Levels Two and Three certifications will be held in October and November.

So much going on! Check out ISD's September calendar here, our Facebook page here, and our Instagram account here. - then check back again and again for updates! There's always something exciting happening!

Welcome back, Everyone!

In joy and peace -

Clothed in mystery and forgotten by history, this remarkable aesthetic Jewish cult may hold a glimpse into the life and times of Jesus. Their beliefs, practices and apocalyptic philosophy-fascinating in themselves-now reach from antiquity to bring remarkable new light on the development of early Christianity. With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the historical treasure of a barren and desolate desert community comes a glimpse of one of the most fascinating-and for us, revealing-peoples of the ancient Judaic world.

Join us as we explore the history and influence of The Essenes!

In The Four Agreements (a New York Times bestseller for over seven years), don Miguel Ruiz revealed how the process of our education, or "domestication," can make us forget the wisdom we were born with. Throughout our lives, we make many agreements that go against ourselves and create needless suffering. The Four Agreements help us to break these self-limiting agreements and replace them with agreements that bring us personal freedom, happiness, and love.

In his book The Fifth Agreement, don Miguel Ruiz joins his son, don Jose Ruiz, to offer a fresh perspective on The Four Agreements, and a powerful new agreement for transforming our lives into our personal heaven: The Fifth Agreement. The Fifth Agreement takes us to a deeper level of awareness of the power of the Self, and returns us to the authenticity we were born with.
