GRANT ROAD TASK FORCE

The First to Campbell Grant Road Coalition will be addressing the Grant Road Task Force about the neighborhoods' concerns for the Phase 2, Grant Road Project. The coalition is comprised of representatives of Jefferson Park, SAMOS, and Mountain/First neighborhoods. On behalf of the community and the neighborhoods they wish to address:
1 -
Bike Safety
at Mountain and Park Intersections. Mountain is the second most traveled bikeway in Tucson, yet there is no provision for some protections in the Grant Road Plan.
2 - Designing our segment of the Grant Road Project to integrate a proposed Jefferson Park Health/History bike and pedestrian loop-three sides of which are either completed or in process. Grant Road will close the loop!
3 - The city's commitment to pay the cost of the consultant fees to redistrict the northern boundary of the Jefferson Park Historic District to compensate for the loss of the 23 contributing properties along Grant Road which will be demolished
4 - The neighborhoods' need for buffers along Grant Road in the form of walls, berms, and green space. The coalition does not support the city's proposal that newly built structures should provide buffers.
5 - The existing zoning of R-1 and NR-1 must remain. The coalition will not support zoning changes that will allow commercial development along this segment. This is the only segment in the entire Grant Road Project with significant R-1 zoning and the only segment that has an NPZ overlay and a designated historic district.
The coalition is your neighbors meeting and working entirely as volunteers. Please consider coming to show the Task Force and city officials that many care deeply about the affects of the widening of Grant on their neighborhoods. The coalition can supply the speakers, only you can supply the crowd.

QUARTERLY MEETING
PARK AVE PROJECT
In 2007, a Transportation Enhancement grant was written by Jefferson Park and the contiguous neighborhoods. You will soon see some significant changes on Park Ave from Speedway to Ft Lowell. Allowances will be made for bicycle and pedestrian pathways as well as water harvesting.
Project manager, Gary Wittwer, will present the plans and projected timing for the facelift. Decomposed granite pathways, water harvesting, sidewalks etc. are among the things planned. This enhancement will provide a part of the proposed Jefferson Park Health/History Bike Walk Loop.
Come hear about what is planned and perhaps stay after for the business meeting to hear the issues and projects being addressed by JPNA.

The Banner team will make a presentation on the proposed rezoning and the Planned Area Development (PAD) document. There will be plenty of time and opportunity for questions. They have not yet formally submitted the rezoning application to the City of Tucson and they will not do so until after the above meeting and after they have heard neighborhood comments.
Banner also noted that due to the summer timing of the meeting, they will be planning another meeting in September for those who may be out of town for the July 20th meeting. FIRST ANNUAL RUBBER DUCKY RACE
The race shall be announced by rain clouds and confirmed on the JP google groups, Facebook page, or Jefferson Park twitter account at joanchall#jpnarubberduckrace. You don't have to brave the elements to participate..
We have 2 Race Coordinators, who will be out in the pouring rain to watch the duckies race. Hopefully we will also have a couple of independent observers - contact Joan at [email protected] if you are interested in being a referee.
All ducks will be released at one time and their progress monitored by official duck monitors. You are welcome to come out and cheer your duck along.

The Ducky that goes the farthest along the route between Lester/Cherry and Grant/Vine wins first prize. There will also be prizes for all duckies that end up in water harvesting basins along the Vine Av Green Corridor. .And the prizes!
1st prize - A painted water harvesting barrel
2nd prize - A quart of Arizona's only local date vinegar, compliments of Iskashitaa!
3rd prize - TBD.

Grant Road - Art Placement
|
|
Members of the Grant Rd. Phase 2 Art Panel met with the artists and the public June 30. The Panel consists of members of the engineering and design team, as well at representatives of the Tucson Pima Arts Council. The two artists, Simon Donovan and Ben Olmstead, previously selected by the group to design the public art for Phase 2, presented four concepts for the group to consider.
As the discussion of the merits and demerits of each concept progressed it became apparent that one concept had the overwhelming support of the panel. The artists were asked to further develop that concept and be ready to present a finished product by late fall.
The group also discussed sites for the placement of the final art. Two sites had been suggested.; one in the area of the "basin" between Hampton and Park and one at the intersection of Estrella and Grant. Due to concerns of interfering overhead power lines, as well as visibility issues, the team selected the Estrella intersection for placement of the art.

Jefferson Park Banner Development Committee
|
The Jefferson Park Banner Development Committee has met with Jonathan Mabry, City of Tucson Historic Preservation Officer, concerning the redistricting of the historic boundary for Jefferson Park's south side. Banner Health will be removing several contributing properties on the 1700 and 1800 block of Lester. Banner has agreed to cover the cost of the consultant to do the redistricting. Additionally, that group has been consulting with Banner on mitigation of noise during and after the construction phase as well as water run off into the neighborhood. The task requires many meetings and considerable research. Jefferson Park is indebted to those volunteer neighbors and the continued cooperation of the Banner Health Team. Thanks!

First to Campbell Grant Road Coalition
|
Giving a voice the the neighborhoods was the purpose for forming the Firts to Campbell Grant Road Coalition. SAMOS, Mtn/1st, and Jefferson Park are the initial members. More information will be coming. You will be offered the opportunity to become a member to show your support for a community and neighborhood friendly Grant Road design.
What happens on the southern and northern boundaries of this neighborhood will have a lasting affect on the quality of life of the internal neighborhood.
It is everyone's issue!.

SUMMER MOVIES CONTINUE AT LA PLACITA VILLAGE DOWNTOWN -
Cinema La Placita hosts movies in an outdoor setting every Thursday night at 7:30 through August. Hundreds of Tucsonans enjoy the summer evenings with a different movie each week for $3 per person (includes all-you-can-eat popcorn). Tomorrow's movie is Pillow Talk (1959), starring Rock Hudson, Doris Day and Tony Randall. La Placita Village is located at 110 S.
