New and Notable
The White House is yet another amazing pop-up book by Robert Sabuda. $29.99  Travel through time as you open each spread and discover the North Face of the White House, the East Room, the Lincoln Bedroom, the Rose Garden, the Oval Office, and the South Lawn of the White House. The text includes the poem "Inauguration Day" by Richard Watson Gilder, adapted by Robert Sabuda. Every American president since John Adams has lived in the White House. More than 1.5 million people visit the White House every year. According to First Lady Michelle Obama, "It's the 'People's House.' It's a place that is steeped in history, but it's also a place where everyone should feel welcome."

The Republic of Spin by David Greenberg $35.00 The Greeks called it "rhetoric," Gilded Age politicians called it "publicity," and some today might call it "lying," but spin is a built-in feature of American democracy. Presidents deploy it to engage, persuade, and mobilize the people-in whom power ultimately resides.Presidential historian David Greenberg recounts the development of the White House spin machine from Teddy Roosevelt to Barack Obama. His sweeping narrative introduces us to the visionary advisers who taught politicians to manage the press, gauge public opinion, and master the successive new media of radio, television, and the Internet.

Let the People Rule by Geoffrey Cowan $27.95 Between February 24, 1912, when TR came out of political retirement to challenge William Howard Taft for the Republican Party's nomination for president, and June 23 of that year, Roosevelt and his supporters created and benefited from thirteen new presidential primaries, the first in the nation's history. Stressing the importance of primaries, TR's campaign theme became "the right of the people to rule." Though Roosevelt won about 70 percent of the delegates selected by public vote, it was not enough to overcome the power of party bosses and entrenched interests. He walked out of the convention to create the Bull Moose Party but then shocked many of his strongest supporters by excluding all black delegates from the Deep South. Let the People Rule shows how the political and social turmoil of that landmark year changed politics in ways that provide important lessons for America today.

And then, to take a break from politics--

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivalk $16.99
Once you let a book into your life, the most unexpected things can happen...
Broken Wheel, Iowa, has never seen anyone like Sara, who traveled all the way from Sweden just to meet her book-loving pen pal. When she arrives, however, she finds Amy's funeral guests just leaving. The residents of Broken Wheel are happy to look after their bewildered visitor -- not much else to do in a small town that's almost beyond repair. They just never imagined that she'd start a bookstore. Or that books could bring them together and change everything.

Orhan's Inheritance by Aline Ohanesian $15.95
When Orhan's brilliant and eccentric grandfather Kemal is found dead, Orhan inherits the decades-old business. But Kemal has left the family estate to a stranger thousands of miles away. Intent on righting this wrong, Orhan unearths a story of the Armenian Genocide that, if told, has the power to undo the legacy upon which Orhan's family is built.

Now is the time to start thinking about that garden...
And yes, we have the Old Farmer's Almanac in stock.

Blue Ribbon Vegetable Gardening by Jodi Torpey $16.95  Master Gardener Jodi Torpey (WesternGardeners.com) offers all the information you need to grow champion vegetables -- beans, beets, cabbages, cucumbers, eggplants, onions, peppers, pumpkins, squash, and tomatoes -- covering everything from choosing the right varieties and scheduling planting dates to harvesting, preparing, and transporting your produce.

Gardening with Less Water by David A. Bainbridge $14.95 How timely is this? Gardening with Less Water offers simple, inexpensive, low-tech techniques for watering your garden much more efficiently -- using up to 90% less water for the same results. With illustrated step-by-step instructions, David Bainbridge shows you how to install buried clay pots and pipes, wicking systems, and other porous containers that deliver water directly to a plant's roots with no or minimal evaporation. These systems are available at hardware stores and garden centers; are easy to set up and use; and work for garden beds, container gardens, and trees.

And then some new recipes. Hey, go through this and decide what to grow! The Make Ahead Vegan Cookbook by Ginny Kay McMeans $24.95 Vegan food with down-home appeal is the sort of vegan food Americans want to eat. Sit down to a dinner that looks and tastes great, but just happens to be completely plant-based so it's also good for you. That's how Ginny McMeans cooks, and here she shares 150 of her favorite recipes. Every recipe can also be made-ahead and frozen for later, as these meals are designed for the busy person. This is delicious, homemade, everyday food that you can cook fresh on a whim or pull from your freezer for a quick healthy supper.
