Being a Drifter is quite an adventure!
Where will she turn next?

We're launching a new idea and need your participation- it's a weekly  Drifter Prediction Contest that begins today and lasts until we lose our satellite connection with our student-built ocean drifters. (There are 3 currently active drifters, as pictured above; click here for LIVE UPDATES.)  All you have to do is predict where each drifter will be in one week's time.  Start now to get in on the first week of action!   Each Sunday, we'll tally up the scores of winners.

At the end of the contest, three family winners will each receive a $75.00 discount on a CSCR family membership (valued at $325).  Family memberships support our ability to engage students in "real life" environmental research throughout the year, especially during the summer months.

To begin, simply place your prediction on this map. The individuals / families that come closest each week (Saturday, 11:59 pm) to each drifter's location win points. Point System: 3 pts for predicting within .5 nautical square mile; 2 points for predicting within 1 square mile; 1 point for predicting within 2 square nautical miles.

Good luck!

Share these maps and your predictions with friends.
Side competition is encouraged!
if you missed it above.

How To Play:
1. After accessing the map, click on the edit button found on the tool bar located just below the map title, Drifter Prediction Map.
2. Use the harzard icon (aka, the "scary face" icon) to place on the map your prediction of where each drifter will be in 7 days.(Please know that drifters can go dark, however, when damaged by storms, hit by ships, or when batteries fail.)
3. Complete the dialogue box with your name, location, and comments.  Location is easily determined by clicking on the parallel of latitude and meridian of longitude to identify the closest coordinates that mark your prediction.
4.  Use category 1 to designate your prediction for the drifter that is cruising near  Long Island ; use  category 2  for the drifter that is near  George's Bank ; and use   category 3   for the drifter that is closest to the   mid-Atlantic Ridge .   (You may need to toggle between the "edit" function and "details" function on the map in order to complete all of the information.  You can open and close your dialogue box to edit your own placements, including deleting your own placements and starting anew.)
5. Finally, upload of photo of yourself (or family) so that others can see who is playing; alternatively, upload a science-related image.
