President's Message - Daniel Andersen, CFP®
Daniel Andersen, CFP®
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for each of you. Our local FPA chapter is our professional community where we come to learn and grow together. Without your participation and dedication to the chapter, we wouldn't feel the sense of camaraderie that we each enjoy.

I've been so pleased with the interesting and informative meetings that we have had so far in 2015.

1.    2015 Income Tax Update
2.    What Financial Planners need to Know about Family
       Law
3.    Financial Planning for Veterans
4.    What We Have Learned from Modeling - Advanced
       Concepts
5.    CFP Board Ethics and Discipline Process
6.    Reversing the Conventional Wisdom of Reverse Mortgages

As we now reach the mid-point of the year, I would like the keep up the great momentum. On July 9th, we will have a very exciting presentation by Dr. Dave Yeske at the beautiful La Provence restaurant in Roseville, sponsored by Oppenheimer Funds. This event is a bit of a departure from our normal location and I ask for your help in making it a great event by reserving your spot by registering as soon as possible.

NexGen Update
Have you heard of NexGen yet? If not, FPA NexGen is a community of young planners age 36 and younger. They strive to be a community for the next generation of financial planners. After reading about this dynamic group, I decided I wanted to learn more. I recently attended the NexGen Gathering in June at the University of Texas at Dallas, and wow, what an experience! This group is shaking up the profession and not afraid to think outside of the box. Being surrounded by like-minded people within my age group was very encouraging and empowering. Locally, we also have a vibrant group of young planners who have decided to meet up, get to know each other and share ideas. We had our first mixer on June 16th
at Hot Italian. We plan to have these events more often and it would be great to see you out there! For more information, please contact Alexandria Cole at: [email protected] or Jenny Hood at: [email protected]

Junior Achievement & Financial Planning Day

I am hoping by now that you have heard me talk about Junior Achievement (JA) and why they are such an amazing organization. JA strives to teach young people to own their economic success. This is my second year volunteering with the organization and I talk about how wonderful their programs are with anyone who will listen! I am continuing to build the relationship between JA and FPANC. At the end of June/beginning of July, Orlando Batturaro, Landon Tymochko, and I will be going into Cristo Rey High School. Cristo Rey High School is a work readiness high school where the students work at least one day per week during their high school careers. The students do not pay tuition, but instead, are sponsored by a local business.

Lester Matthews, Jeff Maas and I have also begun to plan for our FIFTH annual Financial Planning Day! The event will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the City Hall in West Sacramento. We are looking forward to another great event this year. I recently saw Amira Tart, who works with FPA National, and she told me that she uses our chapter as an example to other chapters on how to have a successful event for so many years. Thanks to the support of West Sacramento and YOU, our members, we have been able to continue to help so many members of our local communities.

If you would like more information on either of these events or have an idea for how FPANC can connect or help other community-based organizations, please contact me at: [email protected].

Get the Latest Original Research on Investing by RPI and
Journal of Financial Planning
The FPA Research and Practice Institute™ (RPI) has been engaging in original research on a wide array of subjects of importance to financial planners and the latest study is now available. The 2015 Trends in Investing Survey, done in collaboration with the Journal of Financial Planning, looks at how financial planners are using and recommending different investment vehicles today and where they will look to invest over the coming year. The survey, which has been conducted regularly since 2006, revealed that Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have supplanted mutual funds as the preferred investment vehicle by planners.

And keep an eye out for more research coming out later this year, including a social media study that was conducted in partnership with LinkedIn and a Social Security study that is being done with AARP and CNBC.
