Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
This week's parsha, Shemot, alludes to an important lesson in how we all relate to our children. We read:

 וַיֵּלֶךְ אִישׁ, מִבֵּית לֵוִי; וַיִּקַּח, אֶת-בַּת-לֵוִי
"And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi"

Rashi explains that the word "went" refers to Amram heeding his daughter Miriam's advice and remarrying his wife Yocheved. When Paro commanded that all Hebrew baby boys be killed, Amram decided to separate from his wife to avoid this possible fate for their potential son. However, his daughter Miriam, who was only six years old at the time, pointed out that the result of this decision would be even worse than Paro's decree as it would prevent all babies from being born, boys and girls.

The midrash teaches us that Amram was one of four people in the world who were complete tzaddikim. Even his decision to divorce his wife to avoid procreation was not considered wrong since it came from a place of deep seriousness, thought, and upright intentions. What we do see from this pasuk, however, is the degree of respect with which Amran approached his young daughter and listened to her.

It says in Kohelet:
טוֹב יֶלֶד מִסְכֵּן, וְחָכָם--מִמֶּלֶךְ זָקֵן וּכְסִיל
"Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king"
What an important reminder to always listen to our children with open minds and open hearts.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen

O L O R: Junior High Discovery Learning Day!
BPY junior high students spent the day engaged in an in-depth and wide-ranging study of COLOR! They experimented with prisms, tested for and experienced colorblindness with the help of technology, conducted their own Stroop effect tests, dissected a sheep eyeball, conducted a chromatography lab, delved into the impact of color on mood and its use in marketing, and more! They even made their own t'chelet dye from the Murex Trunculous snail. Thank you to junior high science teacher, Mr. Aaron Kogut, for creating this incredible program and to all the staff members who brought it to life for our students! A special thank you to Rabbi Steve Roth for teaching our students about t'chelet and leading them in the process of creating this special blue dye.

Stay tuned for a video about the day's activities coming soon. In the meantime, enjoy the pictures below and on BPY's Facebook page in the "Color: Junior High Discovery Learning Day 2015" album.
Matan Bat Mitzvah Program
Our Matan Bat Mitzvah Program for sixth grade girls and their mothers is off to a great start! Last week's session focused on Miriam and her role as a protector of her family. After learning various sources b'chevruta, the girls and their mothers wrote and performed short plays to bring those sources to life. Each mother/daughter pair also shared an influential figure from their own family and created a scrapbook page depicting some of that person's important character traits. Thank you to Morah Yael and Morah Dina for leading these memorable and creative experiences - we can't wait for our next meeting!

One Family's Journey From Baghdad to Israel
Third graders got to hear a firsthand account of one family's journey from Baghdad, Iraq through Turkey to Eretz Yisrael. Even though they didn't have enough space or time to pack too many physical items, their special customs, traditions, recipes, and stories all made the journey safely in their heads and hearts to be passed on to the next generation. Many thanks to Leah Cohen, Savta of one of our third grade students, for sharing this fascinating story with our children!

Learning About Osteoporosis
Thank you to BPY parent Dr. Mishaela Rubin for coming to speak with our eighth graders about osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to lose calcium and become more fragile. Dr. Rubin, who does clinical research at Columbia University, explained what causes osteoporosis, how it is treated, and what students can do now to protect their bones. Thanks to Dr. Rubin, our eighth graders were able to build on their study of the skeletal system and also gain a new perspective on their own health.
Around BPY Early Childhood

Gan Kochavim (NA) went letter golfing, playing alphabet mini-golf!

After the icy and wet weather earlier this week, the children of Gan Keshet (KC) wondered what makes snow, sleet, and rain. Since Morah Stacy studied meteorology in school, they invited her to visit their class to teach them more about the weather and precipitation!

Around BPY Elementary School
Second graders are so excited to be learning from their brand new Chumashim! They are learning how to navigate the Chumash and have located their own special pesukim that they read at their Mesibat HaChumash last week...they are becoming real experts!

Third graders are linking their unit on biography in reading workshop with their study of geography in social studies. They are writing about what they discover about different geographical locations through the biographies they are reading then posting their pieces according to continent on the class bulletin board. They found that many of the people they are reading about are from North America and Europe, while only one is from Australia and none (yet!) are from Antarctica. Next, they are going to work in a math connection by analyzing the statistics they are compiling through this multidisciplinary project.

Around BPY Junior High
Kol hakavod to the members of the junior high publications committee who have been working with Morah Joanne Siegel on the production of BPY's own junior high magazine, JHJ: Jr. High Jottings. The inaugural issue has now been published! Check it out by clicking on the cover below:

Before continuing with algebraic ratios and proportions, eighth grade algebra students looked at the Golden Ratio in their own bodies. The students paired up to measure their heights. Then they measured the distance from their feet to their belly buttons and computed the ratio. Many were very close to the Golden Ratio of 1.618!

It's All About the Achdut For...Jennifer and Shmuel Bieler

The First Two Steps to Mentschhood - Part II
by Stanley Fischman
I enjoy teaching my fourth grade classes the "Seven Steps to Mentschhood," based on my book of the same title. We have now learned steps 1 & 2 which end with a three question worksheet. The last of those question is, "Why is it important to learn this step?" Last week, we reviewed the responses to Step # 1 - You shall love your fellow man as yourself. Following are selected responses to Step # 2: You shall not hate your brother in your heart.

4A:
  • So when you are mad at someone you won't hate them in your heart.
  • So you don't get into arguments.

Toy Drive Thank You From Project Ezrah

December 28, 2015

Thank you for your Chanukah Toy Drive donation.

Sometimes it is perceived that chesed organizations run solely on the money raised.  At Project  EZRAH, we are fortunate to have the support of community members who have the sensitivity to understand that chesed goes much further than dollars. In that regard, thank you for your generous donation of toys for our clients' children.

Many of our client families do not have the financial ability to spend money on non-necessities; unfortunately, that often means that after paying for the necessities of housing, food and clothing, there is little left over and it is often most painful for a parent not to be able to provide the "little extras" for their children.  Certainly Chanukah toys and gifts could not have been a part of their Chanukah celebration had it not been for your generous donation.

I know that our client families are so grateful that they were able to see their children's opening-gifts smiles; we are all most appreciative of your sensitivity and generosity.

Project  EZRAH takes pride in sustaining a dignified lifestyle for all our candidates and their families; it is only with the help and sensitivity of supporters like you that we can achieve this goal. Your compassion is a vital contribution.
