One Hundred Guests... Or very close. That's how many people attended last Thursday's Business After Hours at Basalt Fitness. LeadStory

Co-hosted with Rock Canyon Coffee, Daly Property Services and Albright & Associates, the event was as lively as you could imagine in the long-established Basalt fitness center. From the start there was a buzz of conversation, generous exchange of business cards and happy consumption of delicious Smoke food and El Jebeverage refreshments.

It's such a pleasure watching as our business and local community comes together in work and in fun. Mark your calendars for the November 19 joint Basalt-Carbondale Chambers Business After Hours at Eagle Crest Nursery. If you've never been to a Business After Hours, it's always free for Basalt Chamber members and first time guests.

Gen-X, Millennials and More

Speaking of coming together and things that inspire, last Friday a group of Basalt-focused Gen-Xers and Millennials met for the first time at Woody Creek Distillers to talk about their community and how they'd like to see it move forward. The discussion was lively, thoughtful and impressively focused. This is good news to many of us who've long missed this important voice in Basalt. The group is new, but they're already moving at a nice clip with what appears to be abundant pent-up energy and ideas. For more information contact Chris.

Insurance Co-Op Shut Down
~ Valley Insurance Forum in the Works

Last week the Colorado HealthOp sent out an announcement that they had essentially been shut down by the Colorado Division of Insurance. Insureds would have to find new coverage by the end of the year. I received the notice as did about 83,000 other Coloradans. HealthOp CEO Julia Hutchins wrote that she was "astonished and disappointed," calling the DOI's decision both "irresponsible and premature." Just weeks before, we'd all received a letter of good tidings and the day before talking to a HealthOp rep about 2016 premiums there was no hint of what was to come. (On Monday, CO HealthOp filed a lawsuit to keep its doors open but a Denver judge promptly ruled against the request.)

I took to the Basalt CO Community Page on Facebook to ask about others' experiences and started a mini-firestorm. At the Basalt Chamber, there's hardly a community issue that we won't jump into or need we won't try to address in some way (time and Chamber Board-permitting) and this is one that revealed itself as ever more consequential with each post and conversation. One insurance agent reported that more than 500 of his clients alone are covered under the HealthOp policy. People are confused, frustrated and not a little bit concerned about their options. This includes both those who were part of the HealthOp plan and others who've never had insurance or lost it do to employment changes. Insurance providers are girding themselves for a very busy few months ahead. There's a tendency to go to blame. I hope we'll stay focused on solutions.

I started talking to people about organizing a mid-valley Community Insurance & Health Forum to help disseminate information. I called the offices of Gov. Hickenlooper and Sen. Bennett. Then I reached out to Sen. Gail Schwartz in Crested Butte. Gail has long championed rural health initiatives and though she and her family moved recently to Crested Butte she remains vitally active in the Roaring Fork Valley. She immediately offered help and suggestions. The timing is tight and outcome uncertain, but we hope to put together a forum during which information can be communicated clearly and efficiently. Moreover, we'd like to be able to initiate pro-active conversation between our community, Denver and Washington.

In this short time, the easiest way for me to reach those interested with updates is through the Community Page. If you're not a member and would like to join, just click here and connect.

Ballot Issue 4A: Support for Our Fire Protection District with NO Tax Increase!

Basalt Fire District Aims to Improve Emergency Response  Without Increasing Taxes!

Confused? Ballot Issue 4A on the November 3 ballot asks voters to replace a retiring 1995 bond issue with a new one to enable strategic capital improvements for the Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District including:
  1. Upgrades to Basalt & El Jebel Fire Stations for Equipment and Responders
  2. Replacement of Dated Fire Apparatus & Emergency Response Command Vehicles
  3. Acquisition of Affordable Housing for Responders
The new bond issue will be funded by extending the tax authorized at the November 1995 election. There will be no tax increases. I'd like to see our Basalt and Rural Fire Protection District, most of whom are volunteers, remain strong and supported.

Get Free Publicity for Your Business or Event
Nearly every day I receive an email or two from businesses and organizations with pictures, information or a poster promoting an activity or event. Yet, I seldom see them up on the Basalt CO Community Page on Facebook. It's puzzling.

Why go to the trouble of organizing a local event and creating such nice artwork and not take advantage of this free, social media marketing tool? The only answer I could come up with is that people haven't tried it yet and don't know how quick and easy it is.

So last week I created instructions. Take a look here and the next time you have an event or want to announce a sale, give it a try. It's easy and it takes just a few minutes... to reach nearly 1,200 people and growing in the Basalt area.

While you're there, please add your Facebook friends to the group to expand our reach and community. I have instructions for that too.

If you're not yet a member of the Basalt CO Community Page, just ask to join. The more the merrier. There's no better FREE way to get information out about your business and events.
10 Habits of Highly Successful Small Business Owners

By Kelly Spors
in The Hartford BIZAHEAD

What differentiates those that fail from those that become raging successes?

The unfortunate reality is that a lot of businesses fail. What differentiates those that fail from those that become raging successes?

Certain traits and habits help business owners beat the odds and build highly successful companies. Here's a look at the top 10:

1. They dream big. Successful business owners are dreamers. "Business owners often create something out of nothing," says Anita Campbell, founder and chief executive of SmallBizTrends. com, an online community for business owners. They wholeheartedly believe they can turn those dreams into reality, she says. "You have to see your business in your mind's eye. You must have complete faith and belief in this vision of what your business can become from the very start, even when there's hardly anything tangible yet."

Applications for 2016 Business After Hours hosting are already exciting. There's an idea for a patio party, another for showroom gathering. Prospective co-hosts are planning together to create great networking and after-hours social events for the new year.  Please submit your application by November 15.

Applicants must be members of the Basalt Chamber in good standing. Preference will be given to those who've not hosted an event in the last 12 months and for creative and collaborative themes.

But don't let that put you off. If you'd like to host an event and don't have a co-host in mind, contact us and we'll help create a match. If you don't have a storefront and would like to co-host an event with a bricks and mortar business, let us know and we'll connect you. There are many ways to get involved.

Business After Hours are an important Chamber networking benefit. Hosts have an opportunity to showcase your businesses and connect informally with other members. Download your application here and email it by November 1 or mail it to Basalt Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 514, Basalt, CO 81621.
