God Is Choosing Us Now
My starting point is that we are already there. We cannot attain the presence of God, because we're already totally in the presence of God. What's absent is awareness. Little do we realize that God is maintaining us in existence with every breath we take. As we take another, it means that God is choosing us now and now and now. We have nothing to attain or even learn. We do, however, need to unlearn some things.
We have to accept that human culture is in a mass hypnotic trance. We're sleepwalkers. All religious teachers have recognized that humans do not naturally see. We have to be taught to see. That's why the Buddha and Jesus say with one voice, "Be awake." Jesus says further, "If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light."
Thus, we have to learn to see what is there. We want to attain some concrete information or achieve some improved morality, or learn some behavior that will make us into superior beings. But there's no question here of "meritocracy." Although we have a "merit badge" mentality, prayer shows us that we are actually "punished" by any expectation of merit and reward. For that expectation keeps us from the truly transformative experience called grace.
Experiencing radical grace is like living in another world. It's not a world in which I labor to get God to notice me and like me. It's not a world in which I strive for spiritual success. It's not a cosmic game of crime and punishment.

"You Shall Also Love the Stranger"
The Resurrection Thrift Shop has an active ministry to refugees primarily from ISIS, Syria and Cuba. Through a local refugee program, they can come and "shop" in our thrift shop and choose goods that help them to get set up in housekeeping, because they all leave their home countries with nothing except the clothing on their backs. It is an important part of taking seriously God's command to us. Here is an important request from the Thrift Shop Volunteers:
We are expecting to serve 60 additional refugees within the next 8 weeks. Please check your cupboards for cookware, kitchen utensils, dishes, glasses, mugs, small (working) kitchen appliances, etc., for donations.
Chilldren's clothing, irons, simple (in working order, please) electronics, clean bedding (no pillows)etc., are in demand.
Please bring them to the Thrift Shop between 10a.m. - 1 p.m. Mon.-Fri. After hours, please place them in the DONATION bin, in the building behind the Boy Scout trailer.

Some hardworking folks got busy last Saturday and cleared off a lot of brush and other things on the campus along the property line, under the direction of People's Warden Michael Paulsen and Fr. Billy Tweedie. Take a look at the "Before Photo."

Dear all,
What a fun Welcome Back event last Sunday before last. We were overwhelmed with how many children and teachers showed up for the blessing at the altar. Thanks be to God!

Sunday, Sept 13th is a great day to invite your family and friends to join you in worship at Resurrection.
It's a nation-wide observance, and surveys show that a lot of people are just waiting for someone to ask them to church, so you could be the first. Make their wish come true!

Dine Out for September
Mr. Joe Page informs us that the Dine Out bunch is hankering for some Texas Barbecue, and they will be dining on the fine cuisine to be had at Poke-E-Joe's
2121 Parmer Lane on
Saturday, Sep. 19th at 6:00 pm.
Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the good food and good fellowship.
There is a sign up sheet in the Narthex on the table and if you have any questions, Joe Page can answer them at 512-453-3077.

We Are Called to A Radical Hospitality
And the ministry of hospitality has always been a hallmark of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. We love our coffee hour after the 10:30 service. It's a time to be together and experience our community of fellowship.
Lately, we've noted that the same few faithful and generous persons have been supplying just about all of the refreshments, and starting on Sept. 1st, we will be instituting a new system to help with that. Dividing up into teams of three, we'll be asking each team member to bring one thing to help with the refreshments. Just simple items -- not to replace a lunch -- but just to offer some nibbles while we enjoy our time together after church.
Each team of three will have a leader, and the leader will recieve a call from the church office on Tuesdays as a reminder of their turn coming up. A team's turn will probably not come around more than twice per year at the most, so it shouldn't be a burden on anyone. We will have simple menu suggestions for each team leader, but the team will ultimately decide what they supply. By the way, men aren't exempted from the hospitality teams, either.
Anyone who has a special day they wish to acknowledge can contact the team leader for that specific Sunday (or the church office), and take over the refreshments for that day. A list of the teams will be posted in the Narthex where the sign-up sheet was previously posted, and the team for Sunday will be posted in each week's MidWeek,

WHERE: McKinney Falls State Park in SE Austin
WHEN: All day Oct 10, 2015, 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Resurrection has the dining hall reserved all day. There is a kitchen in the hall plus an outdoor bar-be-cue for cooking and serving meals. we will have lunch and dinner there, pot luck style. Activities planned include: swimming, fishing, hiking, nature study, board and card games, rafting, sing along, a photo contest, star gazing, and anything else you'd like to do in this beautiful and locally convenient setting.
Alcoholic beverages are not allowed in the State Park. The only cost is the day use admission of $6 per adult, when you enter. You may invite non-church members, family and friends to this event. Include them in total attending on your survey form. As many special needs will be accommodated as possible, especially transportation.
Co-chairs are Bob Beyer, Andy Lyon and Jennifer Johnston.
You don't need to sign up or register to attend, but to hep us plan, fill in a survey form located on the welcome table in the Narthex, and place it in the yellow box.

Looking for A Few Great Folks
Our mid year meeting will be held on September 27th at which we will elect some new members of the Bishop's Committee. The 2015 Committee has been a great one, but their work will soon be done, and they will need to add some new members to their number.
If you would be interested in serving on the Committee, please see Fr. Billy Tweedie or Brian McElligott and they can chat with you regarding eligibility and the responsibilities involved. It is a rewarding ministry of service.
