This past Sunday I joined Calvary Church, Wilmington for their annual Parish Picnic. The weather was beautiful for an outdoor event. We gathered at Fox Point Park situated on a broad expanse of the Delaware River. It was wonderful being with the members of Calvary and Ketlen Solak, the new head of the Brandywine Collaborative ministry. They are obviously doing well.
Driving home, I went past the Dupont/Chemours Edge More plant. The site has a long and varied history. The land was once a working farm owned by William Penn. Its first industrial use was as an iron foundry. The girders used to build the Brooklyn Bridge were made there. Since World War II the Edge More plant has produced titanium dioxide, the fine white powder used to color things like tooth paste and paint. Two weeks ago the announcement was made that the plant will be closing. A long term trend in our economy is continuing. 200 jobs will be lost. Decisions will have to be made about future uses for the old facilities and land.
In just a few days we will be celebrating the national Labor Day holiday. For most of us it has become the last summer weekend before we turn our attention to the fall. Driving past the Edge More plant reminded me again of all those who work - especially in difficult, dirty, and dangerous jobs. They contribute in important ways to the common good of us all. They deserve our appreciation, respect, and thanks. I hope that we will remember them this Labor Day weekend.
Faithfully,
Wayne Wright
Bishop of Delaware
