LAAC Member Story

In the aftermath of the Butte and Valley Fires, displaced Californians sought to reclaim their lives, only to find the process stymied by unexpected legal troubles. Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) responded by initiating a coordinated effort to support low-income victims of the fires.
Managing Attorney Angelica Millan assists fire-affected clients at Citizenship Day.

Civil legal aid providers are critical for assisting displaced individuals with matters as diverse as rehoming, pursuing insurance claims, and recreating lost legal documents. Following the Butte and Valley Fires, LSNC's Mother Lode and Ukiah Regional Offices teamed up with the State Bar of California, the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, and Northern California Lawyer Access to provide legal assistance to fire-affected low-income individuals, families, and seniors.

Have You Tried the Statewide Pleading Bank?

CAPleadingBank.org  offers attorneys at California IOLTA programs a forum to search and post pleadings to share with colleagues across the state. Using the pleading bank, IOLTA program attorneys can:
  • Upload pleadings to support new legal aid attorneys and those with limited resources, including law students at IOLTA-funded clinics and small, rural programs;
  • Save time and serve clients more effectively by quickly accessing documents; and
  • Much more!
Learn more about the pleading bank, including how to join, at LAAConline.org, or check out this helpful webinar introduction to this valuable service.

Nominate a Mentor; Support Legal Aid

Faculty from the UALR William H. Bowen School of Law are seeking to identify stellar supervising attorneys and mentors in order to understand and share how successful mentors are effective. The results of the study will be published by the Harvard University Press and presented at academic conferences and training sessions for members of the bench and bar.

This is a fantastic opportunity to draw attention to the California civil legal aid community and its mentoring practices, and we encourage anyone who has been touched by an outstanding supervisor and mentor to submit a nomination here. More information about the mentor project is available here.
