Consultation and Assessment Conference

The Consultation and Service Assessment Conference will discuss patient evaluations from a psychoanalytic perspective. Each conference will involve the presentation of a patient from our by a candidate or faculty member of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia. This will be an opportunity to learn from each other in evaluating new patients and making recommendations for the patients for the most appropriate form of treatment. Every clinical assessment situation can be an opportunity for learning at any level of clinical experience. This is an excellent opportunity for those in psychiatry, psychology or social work to experience first hand the richness in this approach to treatment and patient care. These conferences are open to the mental health community at large and members of PCOP.

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Delineate the differences and clarify similarities between psychoanalytic evaluative interviews and psychiatry, psychology and social work interviews.

2.  Discuss and assess developing rapport with patients and issues related to therapeutic alliance.

3. Explain the use of the free associative technique and other technical approaches in psychoanalytic patient evaluation and treatment.

4. Determine assessment core conflicts, ego functions, personality styles or problems, initial transferences, initial resistance, enactments and other qualities of the patients or therapeutic dyad which make him or her suitable for psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, or some other form of treatment.

5.  Discuss how to make treatment recommendations to patients.
