United Way Alliance on Aging Newsletter
United Way's Alliance on Aging's, formerly Lehigh Valley Alliance on Aging, new name represents exciting and positive change to our group.  It affirms United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley's role as the backbone organization and main financial investor in the Alliance.  United Way convened and funded the original group that created United Way's Alliance on Aging over 10 years ago.   Since that time, United Way has funded the core staffing of the partnership.  The Alliance is a vital part of United Way's investment in healthy aging and our name now reflects that. The Alliance will also be unveiling a new logo in the next few months.

Gatekeeper Project
The Lehigh Valley Gatekeepers Program is a collective community approach to connecting at-risk seniors to local services which help them remain safe and independent in their homes. Many vulnerable seniors live alone or have little or no contact with others. Often their increasing need for assistance with daily activities can go unnoticed. Gatekeepers are non-traditional referral sources who come into contact with seniors through their normal work day.

United Way Alliance on Aging, Catholic Charities and both Lehigh and Northampton Counties' Area Agencies on Aging are partnering to implement this model in the Lehigh Valley. The Gatekeepers Program successfully works with local companies and organizations to identify a plan to recognize and report seniors in danger. Company employees are trained to make anonymous reports to the Area Agencies on Aging, when necessary. Target companies include physical locations such as restaurants, banks, grocery stores or beauty salons, or businesses where employees are at the senior's home, such as a delivery driver, utility worker, letter carrier or meter reader. Other potential businesses include those where the employees come into contact with seniors via the phone, such as a call center. If you know a business who might want to become a Gatekeeper Trained Organization (GTO), please contact Amy Angelo at Catholic Charities, 610.435.1541 x 302.
