Maybe, like me, you had a chance to watch the Emmy Awards this past Sunday night. I was amused when actor Jon Hamm literally crawled onto the stage when his name was read as this year's winner of Best Actor in a dramatic role. For his portrayal of Don Draper in "Mad Men," for which Mr. Hamm had been nominated 13 times, he finally won! In dramatic fashion, he eschewed the stairs. It was a very funny moment. He truly looked humbled and honored...or at least he acted the part!

At JFCS, we regularly receive feedback (notes, cards, letters and emails) from appreciative clients and participants who tell us their "Jon Hamm" stories. In many cases, the people we help have exhausted all the leads for solving the problems at hand. For the case management, counseling, job assistance or financial assistance JFCS provides, they offer gratitude for the second chance or support they receive that leads to achievement of a goal or a better place.

At synagogue last week, an elderly gentleman approached me, held out his hand, and said "thank you." I didn't know him, but he looked at me knowingly. He told me that about a year ago, as his wife was ailing, he didn't know what to do or where to turn. He said his adult children who live out of town connected with JFCS, learned what we offered, and put their father in touch with us.

Expressing his gratitude, the man simply said the following..."I never thought I would need the help of JFCS, but I did. I am so appreciative." He continued to tell me that while his wife has since passed away, he was doing reasonably well due to the help he received. I smiled at him and thanked him for his kind words and assured him that indeed, JFCS is here to serve everyone with needs, and that is all of us.

Wishing you a sweet and healthy New Year!

"EMBRACING HOPE, ERASING STIGMA":
15th Annual Conference on Mental Health, Sunday, Nov.8
NEW LOCATION: St. Paul JCC
The 15th Annual Twin Cities Jewish Community Conference on Mental Health, "Embracing Hope, Erasing Stigma," will offer two sessions of workshops with 20 topics to choose from, covering mental health issues affecting youth to people in the later stages of life.

This year's conference  will feature a keynote address from Honeydogs lead singer Adam Levy, whose new solo record, Naubinway, responds to the tragic suicide of his son, Daniel, in 2012.
It is Adam's most personal record to date, relying heavily on his guitar playing, voice and provocative lyrics.

In the years since Daniel's death, Adam has organized forums with other musicians on mental health issues and has spoken out publicly about what it's like to parent a child who is determined to die. Read more about Adam here.

From Belarus to Minnesota, the fierce yearning to serve was innate for both Semen and Danya Paley.

Soon after settling into their new home in Minnesota from Belarus, Russia, in 1986, Semen and Danya searched for a way to be useful to their new community. They connected with Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis and together they spent 19 years volunteering in the Senior Companion Program!
