Students Log on for Hour of Code
Computer science drives innovation throughout the U.S. economy, but it remains marginalized throughout K-12 education. While nine out of 10 parents want their child to study computer science, only one in four schools offer computer programming.
Only 27 states allow students to count computer science courses toward high school graduation.
There are currently 604,689 open computing jobs nationwide. Last year, only 38,175 computer science students graduated into the workforce.
The
Hour of Code is a grassroots campaign focused on getting tens of millions of students to try computer programming during December 7-13, in celebration of Computer Science Education Week.
Although Lakehill already offers a comprehensive computer science program, students of all ages joined in the fun of Hour of Code. Students in kindergarten through grade four used the iPads provided by Trek for Tech funds to explore coding apps, including Daisy the Dinosaur, Kodable, and Scratch, Jr. They also used the code.org site to for Minecraft and Star Wars coding projects. "The coding projects have been such a hit in Lower School that we are going to continue coding next week," said Lower School Computer teacher Casey Pike.
Middle and Upper School Computer Science classes have been coding all year, but were able to add new programs this week. Fifth graders have been building programmable robots. They also continued their study of coding with Scratch, while also earning a certificate for their work in a new program Tynker. Upper School began using Snap!, an advanced Scratch program from University of California Berkeley and MIT, while Middle School followed up their studies of picturing programs with Alice 2.

Third Grade Presents Trip Around Texas
Lakehill's third grade students recently brought their study of Texas history to life with a fascinating trip around Texas.
Travelers to Lakehill's cafeteria on December 4 were treated to a fascinating tour of Texas as third grade students showcased their study of Texas, sharing information on the history, geography, climate, citizens, and landmarks of a variety of Texas towns, from Alvarado to Amarillo and from Wichita Falls to Waco. Each created a travel brochure, highlighting the top attractions of their destination.
Some students dressed the part, outfitted in 10-gallon hats or oilfield uniforms. Texas favorites, including nachos, taquitos, and Dr. Pepper, gave visitors a true taste of Texas.
As third grade students served as tour guides, visitors were free to wander from town to town, exploring the sights, sounds, and tastes from the great state of Texas.

Powder Puff
The entire Middle School came out to watch as Lakehill's seventh and eighth grade girls faced off in a friendly powder puff football game for charity. The boys served as their coaches and cheerleaders. Students also served as commentators and ran the snack stand. The eighth grade won the game, but the big winner was Camp John Marc, who received the $917 raised by the event.
Camp John Marc is a year-round therapeutic camp located in Meridian, Texas for Texas-area children with chronic illnesses and major physical disabilities.

National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors!
This week's senior: Kevin Dai
Kevin Dai has been at Lakehill since 10th grade during Lakehill's first year in partnership with the Cambridge Institute for international education. Kevin came to Lakehill directly from China. Everything was new to him.
When he got here, he had to adjust to a new language and a new school because he was living in the U.S. for the first time. Kevin had the option to study in France, Australia, UK, or the U.S., but he choose the U.S. because he thought he would have more choices and more opportunities.
When he joined Lakehill, Kevin worked very hard and thought that his first year was the most difficult. After his first year at Lakehill, he was accepted into the National Honor Society (NHS). Having mastered English and Chinese, he now studies French. It is not surprising that four words people use to describe him are polite, quiet, serious, and hardworking.
Kevin first appeared on the Lakehill stage in the musical Once Upon a Mattress. He is a classically trained dancer, and he has been able to highlight his dancing in two Lakehill musicals. He is an active member of the International Student Organization, the French Club, the Varsity Soccer team, and the Math Club. He competed in the American Math Competition. One of his best memories was being in musical theater.
Kevin plans to study Business and Education in college. He hopes to attend the University of Texas, University of Southern California, or University of Washington.
His advice to younger Warriors, "You should always try your best to take the challenge. Also, maintain good behavior, not only at school, but also in other places."
