YMCA OF WASHINGTON COUNTY
April 3 2015

MESSAGE FROM CEO: BECKY HARKEMA

Growing up in Iowa I always remembered March as very windy and being anxious

for a hot summer.  This month was the same.  One Saturday after work I ran to my

family friend's farm, Lance and Kerri Bell, and was just about running horizontal to

the ground due to all the wind.  So, as I write about the words "blowing and wind",

life at the YMCA is blowing fast.  Plans for the new YMCA building project are

occurring fast, more collaborations throughout the community are happening and

more lives are being impacted.  This is the most important aspect to the YMCA.

The three stories below continue to show this important aspect.

HEALTHY LIVING

Christina Nash, Senior Program Director at the Wellman YMCA, is offering a program called "Four Weeks to a Healthier You".  She is implementing it with PSI, Inc in Wellman.

There are 26 participants and it is going great!  The program consists of four, one-hour educational classes together as a group.  Then each participant is set up on an exercise program, which will begin their healthy lifestyle journey.  Participants also have the benefit of trying out fitness classes for free during these four weeks at all of our YMCA locations.  A big THANKS to Christina and PSI, Inc. for getting this program started.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

I am so proud of the Washington Water Sharks Swim Team.  The kids, coaches and parent volunteers have all been amazing!  It is so wonderful to see the kids work together as a team and build their self-confidence.  Eleven swimmers competed in the MYAS Regional Swim meet on March 28-29,  2015.  Fourteen of our swimmers qualified for this meet that was held at the University of Minnesota.  The swimmers that qualified are:  Megan Adam, Kayla  Andrew, Gabriela Anderson, Alijah Beatty, Ben Berhow, Noah Bruns, Reece Mayer, Teague Mayer, Cierra Miller, Greta Sieren, Justin Simmering, Alison Vogel, Brennan Westphal and Audrey Wubbena.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

The Annual Campaign began on March 4, 2015 and will end on May 9, 2015.  This campaign raises dollars for scholarships that are given to individuals and families for YMCA programs and memberships.  Our goal this year is $60,000 and we have raised $11,000 in three weeks.  This is all from our fabulous volunteers who are making these important asks!  These volunteers are listed below:

Our Mission

To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Our Cause

At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. That's why we focus our work in three areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
