Welcome Back Note from PTA President |
Welcome students, families, teachers, & staff to the 2015-16 school year! We are starting a fresh year with a brand new school! Miraloma looks fantastic; a year's worth of construction has resulted in a beautiful new school yard, refinished and refreshed classrooms, bathrooms, auditorium, library, and cafeteria-not to mention a whole new main office layout and the STEAM room. A huge thank you to the teachers and community members who spent last week putting the school back together-the turn around from chaos to order was fast and amazing!
This is a perfect example of what we as a school do so well; we come together as a community to figure out what our students, teachers, and school need to flourish and we make sure to get it done effectively and efficiently. Through our PTA funding and volunteer hours, we have provided arts education, organic snacks daily, our PE coach and Playworks recess training, professional development for our teachers (ask them about the Math Conference in Kansas City this summer), a gardening teacher, and many other needed and desired materials and resources.
To kick us off, please join us for the first PTA meeting and Volunteer Fair on Wed, September 2nd at 8am in the Cafeteria. This is a super opportunity to learn more about all the ways you can participate in the school and help our students. Your participation is greatly appreciated and much needed.
On a personal note, this is my last year as PTA President and my 10th and final year as a Miraloma parent and I would like to take a moment to thank the teachers, the principal, and whole community for a very enriching decade. My family and I feel so fortunate to have been a part of this community and to watch it grow into the stellar school it has become today. My one piece of advice as I look back: all students benefit from our school, but as a parent, I have found that the more you put into this community, the more you get out of it. And this community has an awful lot to offer.
Looking forward to seeing you at Morning Circle and the PTA meetings!
Ellen Schatz (Eliza 5th, Althea 9th)

SING-ALONG - Students Only for THIS WEEK's attendance |
PLEASE NOTE: This week's Sing-Alongs on Thursday and Friday will be Students-ONLY.
With an increased student body this year, we need a week of students-only Sing-Along sessions so that we can assess how many people can fit safely into the auditorium.
I know parents and care-givers really enjoy attending Sing-Along so I will do my best to accommodate this participation in future Sing-Alongs. However, w
e may need to limit the number of community members in attendance in order to safely accommodate our larger student body. I will update you as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience on this. This is a fire and safety issue and I appreciate your understanding!

PROP 13 REFORM: Sign the Petition Today & Support Our Schools! |
This is an issue which has negatively impacted California schools and students for the last 47 years and it is time to change that. As citizens and parents, I ask you to get involved and sign this petition and share it with your community.
Here is more from a group leading the reform charge, Evolve California:
Proposition 13 was passed in 1978 to protect homeowners. Unfortunately, Prop. 13 created massive loopholes for corporations, allowing them to avoid paying fair property taxes even when their properties change hands. This large corporate giveaway hurts homeowners, students, and all Californians. We need to close the loophole and make corporations pay their fair share. According to the Legislative Analyst's Office, requiring corporations to pay property taxes based on the current value of their properties would generate at least $6 billion each year for California, including $2.5 billion per year for education.
