Hey Canada! What would you do if you found out your child was being excluded from some classes at school? This year for Giving Tuesday Canada (December 1, 2015), we will tell you a little story about what one mom did when this happened. Here is Chapter 1!
Chapter 1:

Hi, my name is Jennifer Garcia. Here I am with my husband, Pete, our son, Bryan, and our pets, Henry and Doby.

Bryan has Down syndrome. He is 18 years old.

Like many parents, Pete and I have always been a little apprehensive teaching Bryan about puberty, safety and sexuality. We didn't know where to begin.

But while other children learned about these things in school, we were upset to find out that Bryan was taken out of class when puberty was being taught. The school board told us they did not have resources to teach a student with a disability about puberty, and they didn't think it was necessary because he has Down syndrome.

So I set out to look for resources to help Bryan learn about trust, relationships, the body, sexuality and safety. Finally, after a long search, I think I might have found something.

This year, for #GivingTuesdayCA, CDSS would like you to help print copies of Mind and Body, a book about puberty, safety, and sexuality, for teens and self-advocates like Bryan and their families.

Stay tuned for more of the Garcia family's story!
