BayPath Board Member Steven Zafron has been generous with his time, helping to spread the word about BayPath's many programs to the communities we serve.
Zafron has spearheaded a new community relations project, visiting area senior centers to promote BayPath's services.
"The objective is to bring BayPath out to the community," Zafron said. "I want to inform seniors about BayPath, our programs and the Caregiving MetroWest website."
Zafron has already visited a number of our communities, and has more outreach events scheduled for the coming weeks. Check out his upcoming schedule below.

Mission Springs residents had an exciting opportunity in August to participate in a research study. A PhD student in the Cognitive Aging and Memory Lab at Tufts University is studying social factors in cognition; specifically, how social factors protect older adults in independent or assisted living communities from some of the declines experienced with healthy aging.
Eight Mission Springs residents volunteered to participate, completing motor and cognitive tasks, as well as a survey about their social interactions. They stated it was a very interesting experience and were glad to be able to contribute to this research.

 The Caregiving MetroWest website continues to bring its wealth of information and resources to more and more area family caregivers. CaregivingMetroWest.org
has now been visited by nearly 14,000 unique users who have viewed just under 58,000 pages while on the site.
Helping to attract those visitors is the constant addition of new information to the site to aid those caring for loved ones. In one of our most recent Q&As on the Caregiving Chronicles blog, BayPath board member Carol Marie DeRienzo, the "nurse carpenter" of SolaceRNovations, Inc., discussed making home renovations to help a loved one stay at home longer.

Information for Consumers of All Ages
|
New section dedicated to programs serving people under age 60 unveiled on BayPath's website
BayPath Elder Services, Inc. also has many programs that assist individuals who are under the age of 60, including children and adolescents. Now the BayPath website better reflects the diverse population we serve.
This past month, information about the programs serving people under 60 was added to the homepage and a new page combining information and links to all of those programs was created. The new "Under 60" section of the website contains descriptions and links to further information for Adult Family Care, Care Transitions, the Family Caregiver Support Program, Money Follows the Person, Nursing, the Ombudsman Program, One Care, Options Counseling, the Personal Care Attendant Program and the Information and Referral Department.
There is also information about what to do if you suspect abuse or neglect of a child age 17 and under or a person with a disability age 18-60, as well as links to further resources on the MetroWest Center for Independent Living website and on CaregivingMetroWest.org. Please check out our new section for our many programs for people under 60.

BayPath Bouvier Bash a Smashing Success

Supportive Housing, Bouvier Pharmacy host BBQ
The Marlborough Supportive Housing program wishes to thank our sponsor, Bouvier Pharmacy, for their generous support - and expert grilling - at the BayPath Bouvier Bash, which took place on August 20 in the courtyard at 240 Main Street (Liberty Hills Apartments). The BBQ event was well attended by our tenants, and also present were BayPath Executive Director Christine Alessandro, BayPath Director of Community Services and Health Aging Monica Alley and Housing Authority Director Douglas Bushman, who gave a fabulous speech.
The festivities featured a wonderful BBQ dinner that included punch and strawberry shortcake and a live musical duo. A special thanks goes to Cheryl Burgess, Respiratory Therapist at Bouvier Pharmacy, and Jane Rourk, BayPath Supportive Housing Coordinator, for organizing the event. We also wish to thank the volunteers from Bouvier Pharmacy and the Housing Authority for their assistance in bringing everything together. We look forward to continuing our Partnership with Bouvier Pharmacy and holding future joint events!

BayPath Blazing New Trails in Healthy Living
|
Department first in state to offer Cancer program; expanding offerings of Matter of Balance workshop
The Healthy Living Department at BayPath was the first agency in Massachusetts to offer the first "Cancer: Thriving and Surviving Self-Management" that complied with all the guidelines established for the program and the fidelity of the program with eight completers. Participants were very grateful for the program and wished they knew about the program sooner.
This fall the Healthy Living Department will be offering "A Matter of Balance" workshops in English in nine different towns. We also have partnered with Tufts Medical Center to help to evaluate the Spanish translation of the "A Matter of Balance" program for the Spanish-speaking population.
There is much to be done promoting the Spanish MOB but we are in the process of scheduling workshops and identifying potential leaders from the community. We are collaborating with ESWA to offer Spanish MOB in Worcester at a large housing property and in Clinton with the Clinton Hospital with identified Spanish participants.

BayPath Supportive Housing Coordinator
Jane Rourk's tireless work developing the recently launched supportive housing program in Marlborough was recognized on August 25 when the Tenants' Association at Marlborough Housing surprised Jane with their monthly "Good Neighbor" Award. "The tenants are very thankful and appreciative of the great job that Jane does and wanted to acknowledge it," wrote BayPath Executive Director
Christine Alessandro in an email announcing the honor. "Congratulations Jane!!! You are truly an asset to the agency!" ...
Home Care Senior Manager
Liz Tretiak delivered some more welcome news this month when she emailed: "I am very excited to announce that
Megan Murphy has accepted the position of Home Care Supervisor! Megan is an essential part of the Home Care Team and we have no doubt that she will excel in her new role!" ...
After a long hiatus,
Cindy Getchell has returned to BayPath in the position of Elder Community Care Program Triage Coordinator. She was previously the Volunteer Programs and Money Management Program Coordinator from 1993-96. Cindy has a B.S. in Education, is certified in special education and elementary guidance counseling, and has a M.A. in Community Counseling.

Catching the Summer Spirit

 It was an afternoon full of fun - and food - as the BayPath staff got a well-earned break for the annual staff summer event on August 13.
After a hearty lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers from the grill (below), staffers lined up for the water balloon toss (above) to work off a few of those calories.
