Art as a Doorway to Prayer

Saturday, April 2; 9am - 3:30pm
Fr. Peter Fennessy, SJ

At our 2014 retreat, Fr. Fennessy eloquently drew parallels between Rembrandt’s quest for the face of Jesus and our own quest for God. As one participant said, “He was brilliant!”

Now Fr. Fennessy returns to illustrate the many ways art can help us in prayer. It can center us, quiet us, open us to the transcendent, model a prayerful spirit, bring us into the presence of the Lord, set the specific mood for our prayer, and provide the material for what we might call visio divina, spiritual gazing, the visual analog of lectio divina

Art captures our attention and holds us in ways that are more transformational than informational.  Many forms of art will be exemplified: from the East and West, from secular and religious art, from landscapes, seascapes, abstract paintings, and three-dimensional pieces.

Registration is $55 when received by March 11; $65 thereafter, and includes lunch.  Please register by March 18. Payment in full is due prior to arrival.
