Veteran's Day: Saluting the Spirit of Patriotism

The City of Midwest City has deep roots in the heart of our nation's military. In fact, Midwest City was designed in 1942 to accommodate the largest military base ever built, Tinker Air Force Base. The air field was named in honor of Major General Clarence Tinker of Pawhuska, Okla., who was the first Native American general, and the first American general killed in World War II.

Every year on Nov. 11, Midwest City hosts a Veterans Day parade in honor of the men and women who served and are currently serving our country. This year, Lt. Gen. Lee K. Levy II, Commander, Air Force Sustainment Center, will preside as grand marshal.

A Million Lights Every Night

This year's Holiday Lights Spectacular will begin nightly displays on Nov. 20 and run through Dec. 30. The opening ceremony will commence at 5:30 p.m. on opening day. Holiday Lights Spectacular has been shining bright for nearly 20 years and is one of Oklahoma's brightest and longest drive-thru Christmas displays, boasting more than one million lights.

The light display will be open for viewing Sunday through Thursday from 6-10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 6-11 p.m. The holiday event will feature both secular and religious displays. Entrance to Holiday Lights Spectacular is free. Donations will be accepted.
