HRSA Grant to Fund Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship Program

Joseph E. Pellegrini, PhD, CRNA, associate professor and director of UMSON's Nurse Anesthesia specialty, has been awarded funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for a nurse anesthetist traineeship program. HRSA provides UMSON with the grant annually in the amount of $39,741. Click here to read more.

Five Faculty Members Receive Nurse Support II (NSP II) Grants

UMSON faculty members Vanessa Fahie, PhD '94, BSN '76, RN, assistant professor ($101,000); Patricia Franklin, PhD, RN, assistant professor and director of professional education ($2,500,000); Janice Hoffman, PhD '06, RN, ANEF, associate professor and assistant dean for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program ($412,682); Shannon Idzik, DNP '10, MS '03, CRNP, CCRN, associate professor and assistant dean for the Doctor of Nursing Practice program ($470,659); and Louise S. Jenkins, PhD '85, MS '81, RN, FAHA, ANEF, professor and director of the Institute for Educators in Nursing and Health Professions ($1,579,097), have been awarded NSP II grants through the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission and the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to assist with the funding of various programsClick here to read more.

In her role as chair of the Nurses Caucus for the Western Maryland Area Health Education Center, Bea Himmelwright-Lamm, EdD, MS '81, BSN '76, assistant professor, accepted a Nurses Week proclamation from the Allegany County government in May, declaring National Nurses Week in Allegany County.

$3 Million Gift Will Fund New UMB Interprofessional Education Facility

A $3 million gift from The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. will allow the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) to transform the vacant H.C. Walterhoefer Building on Greene St. in West Baltimore into an Interprofessional Education Center facility that will be used by all schools at UMB. The building will include mock-clinical facilities such as exam rooms, in which actors portraying patients will allow students work together to develop and hone their skills.

 

Dean Jane Kirschling, who also serves as director of interprofessional education for UMB, said, "Having a targeted space designed specifically to facilitate interdisciplinary work will immeasurably improve our students' ability to come together and foster their interprofessional care knowledge and skills." Welcome New Faculty

Kathleen Martin, DNP '08, MS '97, BSN '95, RN, CNE, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health as an assistant professor. She comes to UMSON from Wolters Kluwer Health where she served as a professional educational consultant. She was also a course coordinator and professor at Frederick Community College. Kathleen holds Doctor of Nursing Practice, Master of Science, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees from UMSON.

Christine Shippen, MS '98, BSN '73 , took the helm as president of the UMSON Alumni Association July 1. Christine recently retired from the University of Maryland Medical Center after 42 years of dedicated service to the nursing profession.

Anne Williams, DNP '12, MS '86, BSN '82 , director of community health improvement for the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), UMMC Midtown Campus, and UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute, helped coordinate the recent "Spring into a Healthy Summer" health fair at Mondawmin Mall. The fair benefited more than 400 people who sought free health screenings, consultations, and advice on how to stay safe and healthy this summer. Click here to read more.

Student Success Center Offers Assistance to Students and Alumni
UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshops, mock interviews, and online resources. There is also an annual career fair to help job seekers.  Click here for more information.

Susan Bindon, DNP '11, MS '96, RN-BC, CNE, assistant professor and co-editor of the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development, presented a workshop, "Writing for Publication: From Idea to Finished Product," at the Association for Nursing Professional Development's annual conference, held recently in Las Vegas. She also presented a concurrent session, "To Read or Not to Read Critically Reviewing Evidence for NPD Practice."

 

Linda Diaconis, PhD, MS '95, BSN '92, RN, assistant professor, presented, "Online Hospitality: Pedagogy, Paradoxes, and Participation," at the International Association for Human Caring's 36th Annual Conference, held recently in New Orleans.

Karen Clark, PhD, RN, CCRN, assistant professor, took part in a panel presentation, "The TeamSTEPPS Approach to Health Profession Education," at the National TeamSTEPPS Conference, held recently in Denver. Co-presenters included faculty members from Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and College of Nursing, and St. John Fisher College of Nursing. 

Matthew Rietschel, MS, has been promoted to Assistant Dean of Educational Strategies and Technology. Matt will oversee the offices of Instructional Technology and Network and Computer Services, which have been combined.
