NOLA BREWING TO RELEASE KREWE OF MUSES BREW FOR CARNIVAL SEASON
NOLA Brewing's Best Selling Beer Raises Funds for Krewe of Muses Foundation
New Orleans, LA : The Krewe of Muses is a crowd favorite across the city and at NOLA Brewing. So when it came time to make a Mardi Gras beer, who better to partner with than the ladies of Muses? NOLA Brewing's Muses ale is launching on December 10th and will be available during the Carnival season. A portion of all sales is going to support the Krewe of Muses Foundation.
"This is our second year honoring the lovely ladies of Muses with a great carnival beer," says Kirk Coco, CEO and owner of NOLA Brewing. "Last year was such a success, it is still the best selling beer we have created to date."
Mardi Gras is a celebration for the masses, so NOLA Brewing brewed Muses to be a beer for the masses. A Belgian-style ale, light on the palate with low bitterness, select American hops providing a mild citrus edge to the traditional Belgian yeast flavor and aroma. Notably, Muses is a full-flavored session beer (4.4% ABV) so it can be enjoyed all parade long, whether from the float or from the street.
"We are pleased to partner again with NOLA Brewing to release the Muses Ale for the upcoming 2016 Carnival Season," said Krewe of Muses Captain Staci Rosenberg. "While enjoying your Muses Ale out on the parade route and at all of your Mardi Gras celebrations, everyone can feel good knowing that a portion of the sales benefits the Muses Foundation."
A launch party will be held in the NOLA Brewing Tap Room on Thursday, December 10th. Members of Muses and friends are encouraged to join the NOLA Brewing team in the NOLA Brewing Tap Room for the launch, which will feature photo booths and the debut of the Muses tap handle for the season!
Also available will be NOLA Brewing's annual beers such as the NOLA Blonde, Hopitoulas, 7th Street Wheat, Rebirth Pale Ale, NOLA Brown, Irish Channel Stout and Mecha.

HOW: This event is free and open to the public. The book retails for $60 and will be available for purchase at the event. For details, visit www.maplestreetbookshop.com or call (504) 861-2105.
WHY: On Thursday, Dec. 10, author and architectural photographer Robert S. Brantley will discuss and sign copies of his latest book "Henry Howard: Louisiana's Architect" at one of the final events at Maple Street Book Shop before it closes at the end of the year. Taking place at 7529 Maple St., the discussion will begin at 6 p.m. and will be immediately followed by a signing. The event is free, and copies of the book, which retails for $60, will be available for purchase. "Henry Howard: Louisiana's Architect" was released in June by co-publishers The Historic New Orleans Collection and Princeton Architectural Press. The elegant hardcover volume is written by Brantley with Victor McGee and features photographs by Brantley and Jan White Brantley.
A New Orleans-based architectural photographer, Brantley and his contributors spent more than three decades piecing together the legacy of one of the most prolific, yet historically elusive, architects of the 19th century.
Born in Ireland in 1818, Henry Howard immigrated to the US in 1836, arriving in New Orleans a year later. By 1844, he had established himself as an architect, launching a four-decade career. His designs ranged from humble cottages to elegant urban residences to grand plantations, as well as civic buildings, churches and commercial properties. Howard designed the Pontalba Buildings on Jackson Square, Nottoway and Madewood Plantations, the Carrollton court house, the Robert Short house in the Garden District and Saints Peter and Paul Church in the Marigny. He died in New Orleans in 1884 at the age of 66.
The Hot Club of New Orleans takes classical swing-era music from the 1920's and 1930's, retains the classic groove and melds it with their own modern sensibilities. They count greats like bandleader Duke Ellington, gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, and violinist Stephan Grappelli among their influences. The band continues a tradition of sizzling swing jazz harking back to the famous Hot Club of Paris. Since forming in 2000, the band has grown their presence, and developed a tight, fun sound that has led to performances at prominent festivals including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, French Quarter Festival, Fellini Jazz Festival and Jazz Ascona Festival in Switzerland.

The Feast of the Seven Fishes, which consists of seven different seafood dishes, is celebrated by Italian-American families every Christmas Eve. It commemorates the wait for the midnight birth of baby Jesus. Abstaining from meat on the eve of holy days, and replacing it with fish, is a long Catholic tradition. The feast of the seven fishes was an important occasion in our house growing up, with each family member crafting a favorite dish and sharing with family and friends.

Reveillon Dinners
Reveillon, an adaptation of a traditional Creole holiday dining custom, will be celebrated nightly in almost 50 restaurants throughout the city. Menus showcase the feasts of Christmas past, present, and future: Four Reveillon restaurants - Antoine's, Galatoire's, Commander's Palace, and Tujague's - are more than 100 years old and feature classic Creole cuisine. Contemporary Reveillon utilizes preparation techniques and products of the modern day not necessarily available to the original Creoles and can be enjoyed at Domenica, Kingfish, Restaurant R'evolution, The Pelican Club, and many more. Reveillon menus are offered only once a year, making CNOS the only time guests can enjoy this authentic taste of New Orleans. New participants include: The Bistreaux at Maison Dupuy, Feelings Café, Johnny Sanchez, La Provence, Tivoli & Lee (in the Hotel Modern), and Willa Jean. Diners can indulge in Reveillon at The Gumbo Shop for $34 or be treated to Commander's Palace decadent eight-course dinner for $110 (prices do not include tax and gratuity). Click here to view Reveillon menus.
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.
A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)
This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.
Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.
Experience the music, laughter, and magic in this one-of-a-kind adaptation of Dickens' beloved tale. A CHRISTMAS CAROL opens tomorrow and runs only three weeks, so there's no time like the present (Christmas Present that is) to get your tickets!

Local choreographers Nikki Hefko, Donna Crump and Maritza Mercado-Narcisse have created an inspired and joyful celebration to the music of Baroque masters George Frideric Handel and Arcangelo Corelli.
Tickets will be available at the door, one-half hour before each performance, but I recommend buying them online to be sure of a seat.

This Friday Night at NOMA, Ayo Scott will give an Artist Perspective talk on Jasper Johns, whose work is
currently on view on NOMA's second floor. We've also got free art activities, live music, and more. Join us!
5-8 pm: Art on the Spot
5:30-8:30 pm: Music by Eileina D'Ennis & Todd Duke
7:30 pm: Artist Perspective by Ayo Scott on Jasper Johns: "Neutral Ground"
About "Neutral Ground"
"Neutral Ground" is a conversation led by local artist Ayo Scott, who will explore American painter Jasper Johns use of charged symbols and iconography like American flags. Scott will discuss how one's response to such iconography is informed by their own cultural context, and share works from his recent exhibition "the Lies we Believe." He will discuss the influence of Johns' work on his own art, and the way appropriating imagery like flags can help communicate new ideas about such familiar forms.
About Eileina D'Ennis and Todd Duke
Eileina and Todd have been interpreting music with one another as a duo for some time now. They met on stage for their first performance without even meeting prior and have been inseparable ever since. Eileina hails from the United Kingdom and has been performing in New Orleans for several years where she has been an extraordinary addition to the jazz scene. Todd, a New Orleans native, is a master jazz guitarist who is consistently in demand and on call.

She is more like a master of technique, yet with plenty of soul."
Jazz critic Sandy Ingram says "She's a singer with poise and pizzazz, with a voice and an appealing look that bring to mind Carmen McRae and Lena Horne." Stephanie's lyrical style has also been compared to Shirley Horn and Diana Krall, while other critics say it's more like living legend Nancy Wilson

Trinity is the new restaurant slated to open its doors in the French Quarter in early 2016. Free with museum admission.
Executive Chef Scott Maki, who has worked under some of New Orleans' most iconic chefs/restaurateurs including Emeril Lagasse, John Besh and Susan Spicer, will feature an eclectic menu that pays tribute to the cuisine and techniques of Italy, France, Vietnam and Cajun Country - the amalgamation of ethnicities that contributes to the very unique and easily recognizable flavor of New Orleans food culture. Through the Write for Rights campaign, organized every year in acknowledgement of Human Rights Day on December 10, hundreds of thousands of people around the world send a message to someone they've never met. Letter writing has always been at the heart of Amnesty International's human rights campaigning. With 54 years of human rights activism on our side, we see that the collective action of our members really have the power to change lives.
This year,
Art For Amnesty is doing something different, we are amplifying Write for Rights with art. On December 12th, a historic event will take place: ART FOR RIGHTS. Through a partnership with New Orleans artist, Brandan "BMike" Odums, we are collaborating with 12 artists to highlight the stories of 12 international cases through art and creative installations. The murals created by these 12 artists will call attention to cases of solitary confinement, torture, forced marriage, forced eviction, imprisonment for a miscarriage, LGBTI rights, death penalty, enforced disappearance and prisoners of conscience. The goals remain the same: to inspire participants to write letters and take action.
Art can be a cultural tool during times of unrest to expose truths, helping to humanize social struggle and actualize grievances and fears. Often, art inspires us to take action. We've chosen to hold the inaugural event in New Orleans, the prison capital of the world. In New Orleans, Albert Woodfox, one of the 12 cases, has been held in solitary confinement for over 40 years. Art for Rights will be located in StudioBe, a 30,000 square foot warehouse, where over 5,000 people will join Art For Amnesty for a one-day, free, pop-up art event, with the unveiling of the work by these amazing artists. Art for Rights will also feature local Creole food and brass band music for that special New Orleans flair.
Art for Rights, with special guest Usher: Saturday December 12th, 2015, 10am - 6pm CST at Studio Be,
2940 Royal Street, New Orleans, LA.

Original Sideshow Attractions - featuring works by Molly McGuire - Tresor Gallery 1000 Royal St. Saturday, Dec 12th 6-9pm
SHOW IS THIS SATURDAY! TASTY FARE! COCKTAILS! CIRCUS PERFORMERS!
Unzie first exhibited in New Zealand as a teenager billed as the "Circassian Youth" in 1887 and would often show with Francis Flynn aka "General Mite" who was also appearing in Maoriland at the time.
In 1888 he left for London to tour with the newly formed Barnum and Bailey Circus. In early 1890, now back in New Zealand, he was teamed up with the visiting Jo'Jo', the famous dog-faced boy and it was at this time his stage name became "Unzie". He was still being exhibited as a Circassian however and his bill-matter was that when young "he, along with a brother and sister, was stolen by show people and taken to England." He was said to have at one time been with Barnum's show.
Shortly thereafter, Jo-Jo and Unzie set sail for the long trip across the Pacific to the States and landed in San Francisco around May 1890. He was probably about 21 years old and his hair, originally a mere 2 - 3 ft in circumference, had now grown to 6 ft round.
"I never tip my top hat to the ladies," this dapper gentleman would exclaim coyly from the stage. "If I should, they'd think a bombshell had exploded." In fact, the snowy white afro measuring six feet around wasn't the only distinguishing feature of the famous sideshow performer known as Unzie, the Hirsute Wonder. An albino of aboriginal descent, he appeared on stages throughout the world in a time when albinism among otherwise dark-skinned races was seen as a peculiar, confounding and marvelous aberration.

NOMA and The NOLA Project Present The Winter's Tale
Questions of loyalty, faithfulness, redemption and more are explored in one of Shakespeare's most beautiful and haunting plays, The Winter's Tale. Directed by NOLA Project Artistic Director A.J. Allegra, and presented at NOMA this December, The Winter's Tale tells the story of a king driven mad by suspicion and jealousy who loses everything and must find the forgiveness in his heart in order to regain his life's most valuable possession: the love of his family. This later work from Shakespeare, rich with beautiful verse and tinged with magical elements, is a beautiful piece for the holidays and is a welcome story of redemption. St. Louis Cathedral Concerts
Fronting on Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter, the historic St. Louis Cathedral and Basilica plays host to an annual holiday tradition of staging free concerts by prominent New Orleans musicians, church choirs and singers in the jazz, classical, gospel and pop genres.
Within the Gothic splendor of one of America's oldest, most historic and most architecturally significant churches, the acoustics lend an air of reverence to the songs being sung and the music being played. The present structure, the cathedral church of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, dates from 1794.
The St. Louis Cathedral concerts, produced by French Quarter Festivals, Inc. as part of Christmas New Orleans Style, generally run for an hour, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The concerts are open to the public and donations are welcome to help fund the cost of the series.
In recent years there have been as many as fifteen individual concerts between the beginning of December and just a few days before Christmas. In any given year at the St. Louis Cathedral concerts you can hear a sampling of some of the best music New Orleans has to offer.

Bill Yates will conduct a Gallery Talk of his exhibition Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink. The Bill Yates: Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink gallery talk will be moderated by the Ogden Museum's photography curator Richard McCabe. The gallery talk is in conjunction with PHOTONOLA 2015.
About the Bill Yates: Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink exhibition:
In September 1972, Bill Yates was driving the back roads of Florida outside of Tampa, looking for things to photograph, when he came upon the Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink. Yates stopped his car, went inside and started photographing - thus beginning a seven month long project documenting the skaters of the Sweetheart roller rink. Set within the backdrop of sandy remote Florida, Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink is a visual time capsule documenting a transitional period of lost innocence, laid back days of heat and humidity, Spanish moss, roller girls, and rock-n-roll.
Yates made over 800 photographs in the seven month period ending in May 1973, when he packed the negatives away and moved to Providence, to enter school at Rhode Island School of Art and Design. Forty years later, Yates rediscovered his Sweetheart Roller Skating Rink series and began scanning the negatives. In 2013, Yates entered the series into the Photolucida Critical Mass competition where it placed in the Top 50 and became an instant classic.

December 16,2015
The US Soccer Federation announced Tuesday that New Orleans will play host to the last stop on the Women's World Cup Victory Tour.
The squad's first trip to the Big Easy since 2003 will be a special one as their 10-game tour across America commemorating the 2015 title in Canada comes to a close on Wednesday, December 16th at 7 PM in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Championship game-scorer Lauren Holiday has a connection to the city thanks to her husband, Jrue, being traded to the Pelicans in 2012 and has been pushing for New Orleans to get in on the victory tour. "I've actually been kind of bugging them to tell me 'Could New Orleans be a possibility!? Could New Orleans be a possibility?!' So I'm excited and I'll be there and be cheering them on and I'm excited just to be experiencing it here."
Holiday announced her retirement from club and country soccer shortly after the World Cup and is already scheduled to play her farewell game October 25th in Orlando against Brazil. Now that she is no longer playing club football in Kansas City, she hopes to have an influence on the sport in Louisiana. "I would love to grow the game here. The women's side...I don't know if it's as big as other states so I would love to see what I can do here and inspire young girls and boys to continue to play the game I love."
Ticket information has yet to be released.
