Gainesville City School System was recognized with the Golden Radish Award, a prestigious state-wide farm to school distinction which acknowledges the outstanding leadership of school representatives building comprehensive farm to school programs.
The school district was recognized for its efforts to educate students on nutrition and agriculture by State School Superintendent Richard Woods, Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black, Public Health Commissioner Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald, and Georgia Organics Board Chair Mandy Mahoney.
Gainesville City School System was awarded at the Honorary level for its accomplishments last school year which include:
● Schools served local strawberries in their cafeterias.
● Students maintained an edible garden with their science teacher at Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy producing rosemary, cabbage, basil, sunflowers, various lettuces, tomatoes, squash, and snap beans.
School districts across Georgia are using farm to school programs to teach core curriculum, support their local economies, fight obesity and other preventable, food-related diseases, and increase the amount of local food they serve to their students.
The 2015 Golden Radish Award recognizes school districts for all aspects of farm to school during the 2014-2015 school year from local food procurement to hosting taste tests to gardening with students and is awarded at Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Honorary levels to districts with varying levels of farm to school programs.
Congratulations to the GCSS School Nutrition department for its tremendous effort in successfully establishing a farm to school program! Also, special thanks to our school cafeteria staff at all of our schools for their commitment in maintaining an outstanding school nutrition program!

Enota Explorers embark on
Expedition
Recently, fourth graders at Enota became explorers on a mission. Fourth grade teachers Mr. Holcombe and Ms. McConnell scattered clues across the school yard and the playground which led to various things explorers may have found in early America.
One student was lucky and found gold. Another student discovered a rich food source that could be sold in Spain. However, some of the discoveries were not always good. For instance, some students were shocked when they discovered new diseases. The students learned a lot about early America from this class activity and had a great time taking on the role of explorers.

Amazing Pre-K Week at New Holland
The importance of early education was celebrated statewide during the annual Georgia Pre-K Week in which Pre-K students at New Holland Knowledge Academy hosted state officials, district principals, and parents.
Several activities were planned during the week starting with "Pastries with Parents" Day. Parents were invited to enjoy delicious treats and participated in a special activity with their children. Pre-K classes hosted story time with distinguished guests such as State Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, Gainesville High School Principal Tom Smith, Fair Street Principal Will Campbell, and Centennial Arts Academy Assistant Principal Chad Crumley.
To conclude the week-long celebration, a special program of songs was performed by students, and parents were able to view a "Graduating Class of 2029 Wall" which featured each child currently enrolled in the Pre-K program.

Future Government Leaders in Training
Second graders in Ms. Whitney Montesinos's class got firsthand experience in running for office. They applied what they had learned about government leadership to elect a class representative to the Fair Street Student Council. Students used a writing process to create speeches, then read their speeches to the class. To ensure that the candidates felt special during their speeches, Mrs. Montesinos provided blazers for them to wear. In the end, the class voted and elected B.W. Bell to represent them on the Student Council.

Stomping for a Special Cause
The GHS Stompin Grounds school store led by Coach Cornett, Branden Saldana, Johnny Ortiz, Victoria Ellis, and Erika Fabian, has been working hard to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer. The Stompin Grounds store sold "Pink Out" shirts to students, teachers, and staff at Gainesville High School and surrounding schools to help promote breast cancer and support the "Pink Out" football game. The students raised over $1,800 and decided to donate 100% of their profits to help support the fight against breast cancer by donating to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Breast Cancer Navigator Program.
The Navigator Program is a free service that extends beyond clinical care by providing guidance, education, emotional support, and coordination of care with health care providers to breast cancer patients as they make challenging decisions about their cancer treatment options. The donation from the Stompin Grounds store
will assist in providing supplies such as drain belts, bath cloths, and shampoo caps for post-mastectomy patients.

Picture Perfect for "Pink Out"
Students and employees were picture perfect in pink as they showed their support of breast cancer awareness. The Red Elephant family salutes and supports our breast cancer survivors and will continue to "Stomp Out" breast cancer.
