National School Lunch Week
October 12- 16, 2015
National School Lunch Week is officially scheduled for October 12th - 16th and is a week-long celebration of the school nutrition program. This year's theme is entitled "School Lunch Snapshot" and focuses on sharing the best, real images of school lunch featuring fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, milk, and smiling students. Throughout the week, our School Nutrition Program will emphasize healthy foods that are offered to students daily, and our cafeterias will feature new menu items such as Chicken and Waffles and Chili Cheese Crispitos.
"School lunches are healthier than ever with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less fat and sodium," states School Nutrition Director Penny Fowler, "National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the benefits of our lunch program and the appealing choices we offer".
Mrs. Fowler stated that our cafeterias will be serving many fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the week and school year. She indicated that our school menus are kid and parent friendly, and the menus focus on the proper meal patterns that should be followed. Several informational websites are listed on the district's school nutrition webpage that educate kids and parents about healthy food choices and recommended physical activity.

New Holland celebrates
National Hispanic Heritage Month
Every year, National Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized across America from September 15th through October 15th highlighting Hispanic history, culture, and societal contributions. During this month-long celebration, students can examine the rich history and centuries of contributions of the Hispanic community.
On Friday, October 2nd, New Holland Knowledge Academy's Kindergarten classes kicked off National Hispanic Heritage Month. Students, teachers, and parents participated in an all-day celebration in which themes from Hispanic culture were incorporated into each teacher's lessons (and outfits, too). The celebration included parents reading books based on Hispanic culture, Spanish language lessons, dancing, and lunch that consisted of popular Hispanic food prepared by parents.

Enota Students know their Language
Mrs. Bruce's Spanish class at Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy has started the new school year working hard on many exciting activities! Students have been busy singing songs, creating calendars in Spanish, and working on many hands-on activities during Spanish class. All students in kindergarten through fifth grade have been reviewing "los colores" (the colors) in Spanish, "el alfabeto" (the Spanish alphabet), and "los dias de la semana" (the days of the week).
Students in each grade level have been participating in various projects. Second and fourth graders made an "Alphabet Pyramid" to hang in the hallways of Enota. Fifth graders created their own matching game with the days of the week and "los dias de la semana" in Spanish. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in activities surrounding Hispanic Heritage month and the holiday "Los dias de los muertos". Parents and guardians are invited to visit Enota and broaden their intellect by learning Spanish with our students! Ven diviertete con nosotros! (Come join the fun!)

No Tolerance for Bullying at GEA
Gainesville Exploration Academy brought awareness to the issue of bullying this week by participating in Bullying Awareness Week. This was a great opportunity for students and teachers
to get involved, not by waiting for "someone
" to do something, but rather for "everyone" to work together
on preventing bullying in our communities through education and awareness.
Fifth grade students and their teachers all wore black to show that we need to "Black Out Bullying".
