Richard & Ann Wilson

Greetings!

It's certainly good to be back home but we had an excellent First Season of Ministry this time around. I left on 1 February for the Indian subcontinent and Ann joined me on 18 March for the last couple of weeks in India. We visited several of our partner churches in the United Kingdom and the United States taking the long way home. As planned we joined up with our family in San Jose, California as they were making their final preparations to move to Australia. Scott our son and his wife Stacy with little Havyn and Luka travelled back with me on the same flight from San Francisco to Brisbane on 1 May 2013.

We have certainly enjoyed having the extended family staying with us at our home in Brisbane. Scott and Stacy will be staying with us as long as they need to get settled in and start again. Scott is rebuilding his Wedding and Real Estate Photography business. Even now he is beginning to make some real progress, although he is not out on the hustings yet, as all the set up side of the business is to be finalised.

On 12 June I am scheduled to undergo surgery to remove a cancerous spot that was related to thyroid cancer that was treated for some two years ago. We have been expecting the appearance of this cancerous spot as the blood tests were showing that there are malignant cells developing. We are actually grateful that we can now locate this activity and surgically remove the affected area. The site is very accessible and it is expected that I will be in hospital for one or two days but it will take two or three weeks to recover from the immediate surgical procedure. Therefore I have had to cancel everything on my itinerary for June in New South Wales but I hope I will be able to fill those appointments in November. Please continue to pray for us.

My itinerary for July will be visiting churches in Victoria and Tasmania and then I return back to India for August and September.

Yours in His all sufficient grace

Richard and Ann

Introduction

This Newsletter brings us to the end of the First Season of Ministry in India for 2013 which extended from 1 February to 1 May beginning at Sri Lanka with the Reformed Presbyterian Churches of Sri Lanka and finishing in Delhi with the Bible Presbyterian Churches of Delhi, after I had revisited the IRFA Circuit of Ministry in South India, north-eastern India and the north-west.  In many ways this Season of Ministry on the Indian subcontinent has been the best ever.

As planned, my wife Ann was able to join me for the last 10 days in North India and we were able to take advantage of a 'round-the-world ticket' where we were able to visit a number of supporting partner churches in the United Kingdom and the United States as we did two years ago.  Ann went ahead of me and was able to assist with the packing-up of our son Scott and Stacey with his family who have been living in California for the past seven years and who has now moved back to Australia to stay with us in Brisbane until they settle into their new life here in Australia.  As it happened they were able to fly out from San Francisco to Brisbane on the very same flight on which I returned to Australia.  We are all greatly rejoicing in our Lord's help across many things that needed to happen for this to eventuate.

Prayer focus:

"Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God" Luke 6:12.

  1. Pray for the few churches that are seriously considering the Nation -2-Nation program as part of their missionary work; and that these churches and perhaps  their presbyteries to which they belong would be brought into a solid and fruitful partnership with a developing Church in India.
  2. Pray for the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Dehra Dun, and for its future staffing needs and training of future faculty members, as they engage in a 10-year plan to strengthen PTS for the decades to follow.

REPORTING ON OUR FIELD OF MISSION

SRI LANKA- Reformed Presbyterian Church (RPC) and Reformed Protestant Mission (Free Church - Continuing)

Ministry building
Newly built Ministry Centre to reach out into remote regions of Sri Lanka

The RPC church-planting work is pressing far into remote areas of Sri Lanka.  Along with this, well-trained pastors are being prepared to take on this new work.  They are following the strategy of building a church facility for the purpose of Gospel ministry and establishing this ministry through evangelistic outreach into obsessively Tamil-speaking communities.

Since the long drawn-out civil war (mainly in the north of Sri Lanka), there has been a mass exodus of Tamil-speaking people; and it has been difficult to get stable leadership in the churches, as most people who are well educated choose to leave Sri Lanka, if they can, rather than live under a rather capricious and ruthless centralised government, if not a near-on one party state that is becoming stronger by the day with a very strong military and police presence.

Last year we gave a series of studies on 'Covenant Theology' with the pastors, but this year they requested an English phonics seminar to train their workers for teaching English at their various mission stations so that they can use English as a medium for evangelism in those areas.  This is giving a more effective evangelistic outreach, as many more people will come forward for English training using the Bible as the basic textbook than if they simply went out door-to-door in 'cold turkey' type of evangelism.

We can give thanks to our Lord for the excellent leadership and the dedicated commitment of the pastors and students for the ministry as they pursue this work.

There is also a very dedicated Canadian-Dutch couple working as missionaries with RPC called Arie and Janet Droogendijk.  They report that:

'We just came back from one of the missions in Trincomalee and found out that one of your students, who had a pass for the phonic test, is implementing the program in a school where she is teaching.  This was very encouraging.'

Although I was not able to visit the Free Church (Continuing) missionary work known as the 'Reformed Protestant Mission' in Vavuniya in northern Sri Lanka, all the reports are very encouraging and Parthee and his wife Dino are progressing well in this church-planting ministry.  As well as this, Parthee's ministry is proving to be very helpful for the wider church in the area.

  Prayer points:

  1. While we give thanks to God for the steady progress in the work of the Gospel through RPC and RPM, pray for protection for all those ministering the Gospel in Sri Lanka as persecution and the unsettled capricious nature of the Sri Lankan government weighs heavily on everyone
  2. Pray for the various mission stations of RPC and the leadership that is given through Pastor Vijayenthiran and his wife Thanuja
  3. Continue to pray for Parthee and his wife Dino as they are given wisdom and understanding to proceed with the new mission work in Vavuniya (in the mid-northern region of Sri Lanka) and for their influence through teaching sound doctrine and Biblical exposition to the wider community of believers in the area.

SOUTH INDIA

Presbyterian Church of South India (PCSI) throughout Andhra Pradesh

PCSI Pastors Training Guruculum
PCSI Pastors Training Guruculum
I have to admit one of the high points of this Season of Ministry was my ministry with PCSI in Andhra Pradesh.  I was greatly encouraged by the quality of the pastors who were planting churches right across Andhra Pradesh.

These pastors come into central locations once every month for three days to do theological training that is being conducted by capable leaders.  I had the privilege of taking two units in this program called, 'The Picture of Redemption in the Feasts of Israel' (a biblical theology unit) and 'Reformed Preaching and Preachers' (a pastoral theology unit) in separate places for two separate groups of pastors.  I was taken by the quality and the ardour of these men.  The PCSI is a relatively new denomination but has over 70 new church-plants, and I understand that something like 20 of those churches are now self-supporting.  Although this work is being supported by the Presbyterian Church in America it is surprisingly self-directed and self-perpetuating with very little intervention from the supporting denomination, PCA.

The leadership is now being shouldered by Joseph Boddu and his wife Vidya who are currently living in Vijayawada.  Though new in the job, he is receiving general and warm support from all those in the field.  Joseph is already a good friend and is an easy person to work with.  His godly and sincere commitment to the work of the Gospel is everywhere evident.

Prayer points:

  1. As we give thanks for the progress in the work of the PCSI, let us pray for the ongoing on-the-job theological education program, and safety for the pastors as they travel long distances to attend the lectures each month.  Pray that they will be given wisdom and understanding as they fulfil their assignment commitments in between attending the lectures each month.  Pray for the group leaders as they deliver pastoral advice and lecture curriculum that is laid down for the one-year diploma course and the three-year bachelor's course.
  2. Pray particularly for Joseph Boddu and Vidya as they help in the overall leadership of this very encouraging missionary church-planting work.
Covenant Reformed Assemblies (CRA) in Ramachandrapuram
CRA Pastors, Elders and thier wives
CRA Pastors, Elders and their wives

I was able to visit Covenant Reformed Assemblies (CRA) and have ministry amongst all the pastors and elders, and I gave a series of studies on Christology which was well received.  I also had the privilege of having Rev Hiralal Solanki accompany me for a week; and having his perspective on the work in Ramachandrapuram was extremely valuable.  This work is thriving now and, as they proceed to develop their ministry, there is evidence of real growth beginning to be seen.  Their VBS program this year was extremely encouraging.

Tragically Pastor Moses' godly father had a stroke the day before we arrived, which eventually led to his passing away to be with the Lord some weeks later.  This loss has hit the family hard and particularly Pastor Moses' surviving mother; but she will be cared for by the family and probably stay where Pastor Moses and Hepzibah live.

The partner church helping to support this work is Cornerstone URCNA in Grand Rapids; and it was a great privilege to be able to visit this church on my return trip to Australia.  They have been mutually encouraged at the progress of CRA.

Prayer points:

  1. As we give thanks for the progress in the work of CRA, pray now that they will develop their leadership so that new church-planting work can proceed.  Pray for the students for the ministry who are currently studying at PTS Dehra Dun and that the 'Lord of the Harvest' shall send out labourers into the harvest.
  2. Pray for Pastor Moses and Hepzibah with their three girls as they come to terms with the passing away of Moses' father and that Moses' mother will feel and know the care of the saints and the help of the Lord in her loss.

NORTH-EASTERN INDIA

Grace United Reformed Churches (GURC)

GURC Kolkata village church
GURC Kolkata village church

Pastor Pallab Lima of GURC is developing a small group of church-planting ministries in and around Calcutta; and it was my privilege to be able to visit this work on the Lord's Day.  Pallab has worked in Orissa where persecution of Christians is among the heaviest in India.  He reports that the Christians in Orissa are growing in numbers despite the heavy persecution; and certainly I have seen evidence of Orissa pastors scattered all over India.  They are among the most effective missionaries that I have seen in India.  A number of them are working in Delhi with the Bible Presbyterian churches.  Pallab has also had a lot of input into the work that APWM has in Bangladesh.  Pallab's Reformed commitment and his extensive ability with Indian languages has given him great usefulness in these fields of ministry.

I spent a week in Kalempong alongside Evelyn Garrard from LEM Australia.  She has extended the English LEM Phonics Programme in Nepal, Sikkim and the Darjeeling Hills District, spending some two months in January and February, and has had great success in this work - for which we can give thanks to the Lord.  This strategy of drawing LEM Australia into a central position of this IRFA service work is working well and freeing me up for the church work.

Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Sikkim (EPCS)

EPCS Pastors at Gangtok in Sikkim
EPCS Pastors at Gangtok in Sikkim

Our ministry with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Sikkim was the best ever in many respects.  For me this was the highlight of my visit to India during this Season of Ministry. I was the guest speaker for their Annual Pastors' and Christian Workers' Seminar where I spoke on 'Reformed Preachers and Preaching' and also gave a series of evening public lectures on the 'Themes and Characters of the Book of Revelation' each evening.  The numbers for the evening public lectures were down on previous years for various reasons, but they were well received and I believe I was given great liberty in its ministry.  The quality of the younger pastors who have trained through the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Dehra Dun is extremely encouraging, as these men are showing great promise and are being well received by the churches in Sikkim.  The division between the Charismatic elements in this denomination and the Reformed ministry that is gaining strength and legitimacy is a pressing issue; but there is genuine fellowship in the Lord and a constructive pastoral engagement as they learn to develop the ministry of the Gospel.

United Churches of North India (UCNI) - Himalayan Council, (EPCS) and the Darjeeling Hills Bible School (DHBS)

Together with the Rai's at Mirik DHBS
Together with the Rai's at Mirik DHBS

I can report that the ministry of the Darjeeling Hills Bible School is developing in a very encouraging way.  Even though the student intake for this session has been low, the numbers are on the increase and the quality of students is excellent.  I have just received a report that a sum of money has come through from a Korean church that will enable the completion of the Library/Resource Centre that has been structurally completed, but the finishing off of which couldn't be completed because of the lack of funds.  This new injection of funds will now be enough to complete the project.  As well as this, the relief agency 'Compassion' is up and running and has now provided a new dimension to the ministry of DHBS.  There is a completely Christian social agency for the very poor families where the children can come for an evening meal every night and be cared for from the time school finishes until 6pm.  There is also a Christian teaching program and some of the children are now enrolled at the Christian school that has operated from DHBS for a number of years now.  This has meant that the Bible college students are also receiving cooked meals, and it gives them opportunities to put into practice a ministry for the Gospel's sake.  A new supply of fresh water has been obtained and also a generator has been purchased when there is no mainline power.  The upgrades in the school buildings are beginning to happen although they have got a long way to go.

I gave a series of studies with the Bible college students on 'Christology' which was well received and put me in touch with the students who have just enrolled.

Prayer points:

  1. As we give thanks for the growing Reformation spirit and biblical integrity in the GURC in the Kolkata region, UCNI Himalayan Council in the Darjeeling Hills District, and the EPCS of Sikkim, continue to pray for the pastors and elders in these churches for wisdom and understanding in their ministry and that they might be given open doors for the Gospel's sake.
  2. Pray for DHBS and its teaching ministry and also for 'Compassion' that is part of this ministry to the immediate region of Mirik.  Pray for Dr Rai, Kingchar, Krusal and the staff of DHBS.  Pray that the completion of the Library and Resource Centre would be achieved quickly and that further funds would be committed to the general upgrade of the DHBS facilities.
  3. Pray for LEM Australia's role in the IRFA service ministry of teaching educators the English intensive phonics discipline within schools and educational institutions in Northern India and Nepal.  Continue to pray for Evelyn Garrard in this respect.
  4. Pray for the APWM work in Bangladesh as they continue to train evangelists and pastors for their outreach into Bangladesh.  Pray for unity amongst all those in this ministry.  Also pray for Pallab Lima as he is given opportunities for ministry in Bangladesh, Kolkata and Orissa.

DELHI (NORTHWEST) AND PATNA (BIHAR) - Reformed Presbyterian Church of India (RPCI)

Rev Hiralal and Mrs Luxmi Solanki and Rev Richard Wilson
Hiralal and Luxmi Solanki and Richard Wilson

The church-planting work in Delhi has developed so that a new Presbytery known as the Bible Reformed Presbytery has now been formed, and Rev Hiralal Solanki has now been designated as the Pastoral Coordinator for Church-Planting work for the PCI, with particular focus upon this new Presbytery.  We give thanks to God for a full year's support that has come in through IRFA.  We have now set up a separate account called the 'Hiralal Solanki Support Fund', and those who wish to contribute money to that fund may do so by nominating that your contribution be allocated to that fund.  We need AU$6000 a year to support Hiralal and his family in this work. We would greatly appreciate advanced gifts toward this support so as we can provide certainty for 2014 for the Solanki's. We propose to send out a separate report outlining the ministry of Hiralal Solanki so that you are fully informed concerning his progress.

The sad news is that Hiralal's Hindu father suddenly died whilst I was in Delhi last March.  This put a damper on our ministry in Delhi but it was good to be able to be with the Solanki's during this testing time.  Please pray for Hiralal's mother who is showing great interest in the Gospel and has even requested baptism.

Pastor Sanjay Sharma - Faith Bible Presbyterian Church - Delhi
Pastor Sanjay Sharma - Faith Bible Presbyterian Church - Delhi

One very exciting development is that a new man has come into the Delhi ministry.  His name is Pastor Sanjay Sharma; and he is taking over from Hiralal Solanki.  Sanjay is a gifted preacher and a warmhearted pastor who is truly God's provision as Hiralal moves into his new role (even though he will maintain his position as senior pastor at the central Faith Bible Presbyterian Church in Delhi).

For the first time I was able to visit the RPCI new church-planting work in Patna in the state of Bihar.  I was greatly encouraged to see the progress in this work, and that there is a strong evangelical ministry that is being well received.  Patna has a large number of Christian aid agencies and NGO's working in the area, and I have seen more missionaries in Patna than I have seen anywhere else in India.  This is good as Bihar is a very needy area because the social needs of Bihar are extremely great.  The weight of this ministry is now lying on the shoulders of Pastor Sukhendra and of Aruna Biswas who is new to the Reformed faith and is going to need a lot of encouragement and guidance.  However, there are some good people within the

Pastor Sukhendra and of Aruna Biswas of Putna
Pastor Sukhendra and of Aruna Biswas of Putna

congregation who will provide this kind of encouragement.  There is a strong and experienced Presbyterian missionary who is doing micro-finance NGO work in Patna.  His name is Jonathan Young and his wife is Fozia an Indian national who work along with a team of Western workers in this NGO organisation.  Even though it is a tough area work in this Gospel church-planting has made a good start and there is every encouragement that it will continue to develop.  There are also other very fine Christian missionaries within the Indian community who are giving good support to Pastor Sukhendra and Aruna Biswas.

Prayer points:

  1. Continue to pray for Hiralal and Luxmi Solanki along with their 20 pastors working in Delhi, Jaipur in Rajasthan, and now Patna.  As we give thanks for the provision of Pastor Sanjay Sharma as Hiralel's replacement, pray that Sanjay will be given wisdom as he ministers in his role as pastor at Faith Bible Presbyterian Church in Delhi.
  2. Pray for Pastor Sukhendra and Aruna Biswas as they develop the new church-planting work in Patna and give thanks to God for the place of worship that has been granted to them in Patna.  Also pray for Jonathan Young with his wife Fozia as they give encouragement to Biswas in his ministry.
  3. Pray for Hiralal Solanki's mother as she moves into saving faith, and that the family would also be reached for the Gospel's sake.

LETTER FROM NEPAL - Nepal Campus Church, Pastor Uma Sharma writes:

Nepal Campus Church - Kathmandu
Nepal Campus Church - Kathmandu

Greetings from Kathmandu!

By the grace of our loving God and power of your prayers we are safe and fine in Kathmandu and the LORD's work is going well.

Many thanks for your continue prayers for Nepal ministry.  Our Saturday worship service and weekly bible study are going well.  We finished our bible study through Christianity Explored course in Nepali language in our church.  What a wonderful blessings from God that all our members they were so blessed from this course.

We are getting very good response of this course in Kathmandu and outside of Kathmandu.  Some churches of Kathmandu are inviting me to give training from this course.  Last week I went Vineyard Church, Bagdol, Lalitpur.  They found it is very useful material for Bible study.  Now they are using this course in their Bible study.  Some other churches also interested and are getting contact with me.

We are also planning that after Easter we will visit Far-West development region to give this training.  We need to travel whole night and half day by bus to get there.  I am doing contact with a group of pastors in that area.

We have organized an especial evangelistic program in our church on 14th April because that day is the first day of the year according to Nepali calendar.  I do appreciate your prayers for this program and after this program we will go Far-West development region to give training of CE course.

Please convey my greetings.

In Christ

Uma

  1. Please continue to pray for this Mirik Project and for the shortfall in its financial needs.  There still needs to be a third and fourth floor built to provide for student accommodation and a conference centre on top; but we have an excellent start for this project for which we can be thankful to God.
  2. Please pray that the application will be successful for PresAid Appeals and that we can get started with the CRA Capital Building Fund and the first building project in Ramachandrapuram.
  3. Give thanks to God for the financial support that has come in to provide an independent stipend for Rev Hiralal Solanki as he begins his work has Pastoral Coordinator to come alongside the church panting pastors and to assist them toward church growth and development.

  4. Please pray for these two theological students and their families as we go through the selection process.
  5. Please keep this work before 'the throne of grace' in prayer, not only for the publication of this material, but also for the training process of key members of the Nepal Campus Church, and that the Lord may give openings for the Gospel for them.
    • Pray that the Nepal Campus Church may find a partner-church through the Nation 2 Nation programme.
    • Give thanks to God for the way Pastor Uma Sharma has been given help and guidance in re-establishing the new Ministry and Worship Centre that has been now completed.
    • Give thanks to God for the newly translated and published Christianity Explored material which is now completed and paid for.
    • Pray that as Pastor Uma Sharma is now  training people in his team to use Christianity Explored.
    • Pray that open doors into the hearts of the university students would be granted to them. Pray also for his remote areas programme that is on their hearts as well.
  1. Pray for the Delhi Education Centre Ministry. We can thank God that we have a small foundation fund for this project; but we need someone who can carry this vision through.  Please pray that God would provide staff for this project.
  1. 'Solanki's Vision'.  But it is a big-ticket item and is a major project.  Could I ask you to make this a matter of prayer; and if we are found praying surely our Lord will answer our prayers and this vision of Solanki's may be fulfilled.
