Bennett to lead TMS 402/602 through 2022
Re-A ppointed as Chair for 6-year Cycle

TMS's Technical Activities Committee unanimously reaffirmed Dr. Richard Bennett to serve as Chairman of TMS 402/602 for a second term this past November, noting the excellent job he has done as current Chair. While Bennett and the Committee is currently preparing for public comments on the proposed 2016 edition of TMS 402/602, the Committee under Bennett's leadership is already planning for the next revision cycle. That cycle is being scheduled for 6-years, breaking the typical three year revision cycle. This change, which was formally proposed by Bennett and TMS 402/602 Vice Chair David Pierson, was approved for a 1-time trial by TMS's Board at their October meetings. Designers and others have requested a longer revision cycle for codes and standards as the number of changes has increased the cost and time it takes to keep up with the revisions.

Bennett is Professor at the University of Tennessee and he has served on TMS 402/602 for a number of years, currently as Chair, and previously as Vice Chair. He is a member of TMS Board of Directors, a Fellow of the Society, the winner of the 2014 John B. Scalzi Research Award and a recipient of a 2011 Service Award from TMS.

Applications for the 2016-2022 will be accepted in late spring of next year. Watch TMS's website for an announcement.

Faculty/Professor's Workshop (UPMW) Planned for March 20-22 at UCSD

Registration is now open for the 2016 University Faculty/Professor's Masonry Workshop (UPMW), which will be held at the  University of California San Diego for March 20-22. The UPMW, which is hosted by TMS with the support of a number of sponsors,  assists faculty teaching or planning to teach masonry. Dr. Benson Shing at UCSD will serve as the host for the Workshop.  As part of the excellent sessions that will be held, sessions on Innovative Approaches to Education, Masonry Design, and Masonry Detailing will be offered. Tours of a Concrete Block Manufacturing Plant and UCSD's Shake Table Facility are planned. In addition, attendees will have a chance to lay block units and learn about masonry teaching resources.

The goal of the UPMW is simple: to assist professors teaching masonry so their students, who will be future designers and construction managers, are comfortable using masonry on their projects.
