Newsletter- December 24, 2015

Things are progressing nicely in our efforts to organize the Rhode Island School of Fly Fishing and to begin setting our educational programs for 2016. I apologize for what may feel like newsletter overkill, but I've always been a proponent of "more information is better than less" even at the expense of turning a few people off.
Since my last communication we have further solidified two venues and two dates for our fly fishing schools. This newsletter will provide those updates, plus a few other things noted in the "Contents" section.

Thanks,
Jim Barr

I recently fished the Salmon River with Captain Bob Hines. It was my first ever steelhead trip and it was awesome. Captain Bob had me totally prepared and put me in a position to succeed. It was like fishing with your best fishing buddy and a knowledgeable vastly experienced professional guide rolled into one. Can't wait to do it again. Thanks Bob.

Freshwater Fly Fishing School- Addieville East Farms- 4/16/16

In the December 3rd newsletter we announced our Freshwater Fly Fishing School and gave particulars on where that school will be held and what it will be comprised of. We were up at Addieville East Farms two weeks ago to review a few particulars about the school with their management and while there we had an opportunity to fish of course, but more importantly take a set of photographs that we wanted to include in our next newsletter (this one) to show you in more detail just how perfect this location is for our freshwater schools. Addieville is a private hunting, sporting clays and fly fishing club in Burrillville, RI. Our freshwater fly fishing school will be held there on Saturday April 16, 2016 from 8am-5pm. The cost for the school is $295 per student. Lunch will be provided as will fishing on a stocked trout pond to learn your newly acquired fly fishing skills. For additional information please visit our website: www.RISchoolofFlyFishing.com.  Here are several photos of this wonderful facility.

Worm Hatch/ Flats Fishing School- Frosty Drew Nature Center- Ninigret Park-Charlestown, RI- April 30, 2016

The Rhode Island School of Fly Fishing is happy to announce that we have entered into an agreement with the Frosty Drew Nature Center and Observatory in Charlestown, RI (http://frostydrew.org/)  as the location for one of our upcoming specialty programs,  "The Rhode Island Cinder Worm Hatch/ Flats Fishing School."

Frosty Drew is an ideal location to teach anglers about fly fishing and fly casting in salt water and to introduce them to one of the most exciting striped bass fisheries in the northeas t... what we affectionately refer to as "The Worm Hatch". The facility is located within Ninigret Park, just a mile from public foot, canoe and kayak access to Ninigret Pond, one of the most beautiful saltwater estuaries in Rhode Island.

The Frosty Drew facility provides expansive areas to learn fly casting on grass and fresh water. Their conference center is large enough for groups of 20 students in a wonderful meeting room/theatre, complete with an overhead LCD projector, pull down projection screen, whiteboards, large tables and chairs, a kitchen, bathroom facilities, and plenty of parking.

As with all our programs, RISFF will provide top-shelf training by a staff who as individuals and guides have been fly fishing in Ninigret and other Rhode Island salt ponds for 20+ years, more experience in fishing the worm hatch and the salt pond flats than anyone else.

The school will be held on April 30, 2016 from 8am until dark. This very intensive all-day school will educate anglers on everything they will need to know to be successful in catching striped bass during the infamous cinder worm emergence that takes place every spring in a variety of Rhode Island salt estuaries. The plan for this school is to take students who have never cast a fly rod and progress them to catching striped bass on a worm pattern that they tied... in the same day. The "hatch" as we call it is legendary and this school will take the mystery out of how to be successful. The Frosty Drew facility is located just a few minutes from a superb small boat and wading access area to Ninigret Pond, perhaps the most notable salt pond in Rhode Island for fishing the worm hatch.

Patricia Ross Watson- Worm Hatch Striper

This school will teach the student about the variety of Rhode Island waters that have worm hatches, strategies on how and when to intercept striped bass that have staged in our salt ponds to feed on cinder worms, fly patterns and fly casting techniques necessary to be successful. At the end of the classroom and grass/pond fly casting sessions we will proceed to Ninigret Pond for a guided wading trip. The school will include PowerPoint presentations, fly casting practice on grass and the fresh water pond at Frosty Drew, fly tying several simple worm fly patterns, lunch and beverages and fishing for stripers. This class will be limited to 20 students. Students who complete this school will have nearly six weeks ahead of them to put their learnings to the test in fishing the worm hatch.

Our schools provide a huge value proposition for our students, tuition is set at $275.

Events- Fly Tying Demonstrations/ Class- 1/23/16

We have been having a ball conducting fly tying demonstrations at Bass Pro Shop in Foxboro, MA. Demo's have been held on December 5th and 19th and our next demonstration is scheduled for January 9th running from 10am to 3pm. We are situated at the entrance to the White River Fly Shop tying a host of fresh and saltwater fly patterns and answering fly fishing and fly tying questions asked by visitors. If you are in the area on January 9th, stop by and say hello... and bring any questions you have with you. This next session will be after you have received all that cool fly fishing loot you received from friends and family during the Holidays... bring your questions to us on how to set up your rod, reel, line or how to tie your favorite fly pattern.

On January 23rd we will be holding our all-day fly tying class at Bass Pro Shop as we announced in our last email. To register contact Capt. Jim Barr @ [email protected], or call at 401.465.8751. For additional details visit the RISFF website: www.RISchoolofFlyFishing.com.

December Fishing Porn- Elk Creek, PA
Last week Capt. Jim Barr couldn't take sitting behind the computer any longer so he jumped at a great offer by his good friend Dave Dane and drove the 480 miles west to Dave's home near Altoona, PA. From there Jim and Dave headed north for a few days to Erie, PA and fished Elk Creek for Steelhead and Brown trout. Water levels were low but air temperatures were very mild making for very comfortable fishing conditions. We had some great days and also a few slow ones (that's fishin'), but overall we kicked out the jams and got tight to some nice December fish.
