TWO ARRESTED IN TIFTON SPAS
CHARGED WITH SEX ACTS FOR HIRE
Following
undercover investigations at
two spas in
Tifton, two
arrests have been made, Tift County Sheriff
Gene Scarborough said
Thursday.
The investigation began when the
Tift County Sheriff's Office received complaints from citizens that the spas targeted
in the investigation were
exchanging sex acts for money
.
On
Wednesday, Sept. 16, undercover agents were sent into the
Royal Spa located at 3313 Highway 82 West and the
#1 Spa located at 3119 South Central Ave. While patronizing the spas, the undercover agents were offered sex acts for money, which is a violation of state law.
As a result of the investigation, the
following arrests were made:
Myong Chun Toups, 59,
of Georgia, was arrested at the Royal Spa and charged with masturbation for hire.
Ho Suk Kim, 51,
of Georgia, was arrested at the #1 Spa and charged with masturbation for hire.
Both suspects were taken to the
Tift County Jail, where they were released on bond later Thursday.
Sheriff
Scarbrough has contacted the
Tift County Code Enforcement Office in reference to the activities occurring at the spas. Scarbrough said his goal is to have the business licenses of the spas revoked through the Sheriff's Office working with code enforcement officials.
"Enforcing these type crimes are difficult and mostly require citizen complaints to get an investigation started, as in this case. I thank our citizens for being observant and making the calls that can make a difference in the safety of our community. We can't do it without your support," the sheriff said.

ELECTIONS BOARD TO DISCUSS VOTING PRECINCT CONSOLIDATION
Tift countians who want to know more about the proposed
consolidation of voting precincts may attend the
Tift County Board of Elections meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
The county elections board plans to consolidate Tift's precincts from the current 12 to just one based at the UGA Conference Center in Tifton.
This would
be the only voting precinct for all of Tift County. 
Elections officials say the state
has encouraged the consolidation. They say the move will save the county about $2,000 during each election.
Some residents say the consolidation will pose a hardship on elderly, handicapped and lower income residents from around the county who live outside the
city of Tifton.
The Tift
County
Democratic Party has been vocal against the consolidation. On the party's Facebook page, it wrote: "While this will have many advantages for the employees at the (Board of Elections) an
d the poll workers, there will be no more local voting precincts for TyTy, Omega, etc. ... We should be working to make voting as easy and convenient as possible, and this will not be convenient for many people."
Tift elections officials say other counties have been consolidating precincts and that
Lowndes County went
from 37 precincts to nine with
one of them encompassing about
20,000 voters -- the size of
Tift County.

CONSTITUTION DAY AT ABAC
APPEALS COURT JUDGE SAYS DOCUMENT

Georgia Court of Appeals Judge
John Ellington, an ABAC alumnus, emphasized the importance of a document signed 228 years ago at the annual
Constitution Day event at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on
Thursday, Sept. 17.
"The ideas on which America was founded are embodied in the
Constitution," Ellington told a full house of ABAC
students in the
Chapel of All Faiths. "America's founding fathers knew the Constitution was not a perfect document so they created a way to amend it.
"In some countries, if you have the biggest gun or the biggest stick, you win the argument. In our country, we come to court armed with the Constitution and the laws of our land."
Ellington said that when the
39 men signed the Constitution on
Sept. 17, 1787, in
Philadelphia, they set the stage for a quality of life that still exists.
"The quality of life in any country depends on the quality of the judicial system," said Ellington, a
1980 ABAC graduate. "Our system of justice separates us from every other country on earth. We settle our disputes peacefully at the courthouse."
The
Constitution is the oldest and shortest national constitution in existence today.
Abraham Baldwin, the namesake of the college, and
William Few were the
only Georgia signers of the 4,543-word document.
Ellington was the student body president and the winner of the prestigious
Donaldson Award when he was a student at ABAC from
1978-1980.
"I spent two of the best years of my life on this campus," Ellington said. "What you learn inside these classrooms is important. What you learn outside the classroom is also important. The friends you make and the people you meet at ABAC will have a lifetime impact.
"The values that we have on this campus travel with you. I am glad to see that the college is continuing to carry out its mission of preparing students for life.
ABAC is more than a college; it's a way of life."

SHERIFF SAYS BE WARY
Tift County Sheriff
Gene Scarbrough was the guest speaker at the
Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce monthly membership meeting
Thursday at the
Georgia Museum of Agriculture. The sheriff discussed several different scams that have been reported in the area while also discussing identity theft and other law enforcement issues.
Also during the meeting, Jones Construction of Tifton was named Large Business of the Month. In the photograph below, Jeremy Jones and Jonathan Jones receive the award from representatives of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Small Business of the Month is Badcock Furniture. A representative of Badcock was not in attendance at the luncheon meeting held at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture, the former Agrirama.

ABAC BARREL RACING FOR ALZHEIMER'S
Riders and horses will compete in a
barrel race at the
rodeo arena at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on
Saturday, Sept. 19, to raise funds for those people living with
Alzheimer's.

ABAC Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, the
"Race for A Cure" begins at
10 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the local Alzheimer's Association. This event is free for spectators.
The
exhibition phase starts at
10 a.m., followed by the
jackpot at
1 p.m. There is a fee of $5 for riders to participate in the exhibition round, and a fee of $25 for the jackpot. There will be a poles round available at the end of the jackpot. No pre-registration is required. This is an

The annual
Cancer Stomp: Tift County Walk & Family Fun event is
9 a.m.-noon on
Saturday, Oct. 3 at the
YMCA soccer fields off
Westover Road.
The
Cancer Stomp is a fundraising campaign of the
Cancer Coalition of South Georgia. Folks can participate individually or as a member of a team, raising money through different activities.
The community fundraising wraps up with a one-mail reflective walk followed by family fun activities to celebrate the fundraising success, honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to the disease. The family activities include relay races, aerobics, hula hoops, Frisbee throwing, face painting and more.
