Tampa Bay Times: Column: Extending health care is win-win

The Tampa Bay area is a great place to live. Excellent schools, a variety of career opportunities, a beautiful environment, safe neighborhoods and quality health care are just a few benefits of our communities.

Another hallmark of great communities is their desire to continue to improve. As community leaders, we are aware of the many challenges local governments, businesses and residents face. Unfortunately, health care coverage remains out of reach for many working citizens, and we are working together to fix this divide. We recently joined with business and health care leaders at the "Cover the Bay" 2015 Bay Area Mayors Conference to discuss a collaborative approach to extending health care coverage to more uninsured Florida residents.

Tampa Bay Times: Kriseman seeks to reclaim hundreds of 'dead' properties using outside legal help

The city's latest idea for breathing life into "dead" properties: Ask a judge to force them to auction.

The largely untested plan being put forth by Mayor Rick

Kriseman could be used on more than 400 properties in legal limbo sprinkled across nearly every city neighborhood. No one can buy the properties because it's unclear who owns them, or the owner is unreachable or unresponsive. The Midtown neighborhood, one of the city's poorest, has the greatest concentration, stymieing reinvestment there, officials say.

Tampa Bay Times: Ruth: Florida voters have no way to recall Gov. Rick Scott, Cabinet

It came into this world at 11:21 a.m. on Feb. 16, 2011, a happy, bouncing bundle of hope and idealism. It died lonely, forgotten and neglected at 2:07 a.m. less than four months later, a victim of Tallahassee double standards and incumbent political tokus protection.

Tampa Bay Times: Editorial: St. Petersburg Council wants Rays but lukewarm on cash for new stadium

The St. Petersburg City Council's position on baseball is crystal clear. All council members agreed Thursday they want the Tampa Bay Rays to remain in St. Petersburg for the long term. Most of them just aren't ready to spend the public money it would take to build a new stadium. How's that for bold leadership?

The lack of enthusiasm among council members for continuing the same level of spending on baseball, much less increasing it, was obvious during Thursday's workshop. A suggestion by council chairman Charlie Gerdes that they endorse spending the roughly $6 million a year used on financing outdated Tropicana Field for a new stadium fell flat. The reality is it likely would take more city money than that to help pay for a new stadium expected to cost $500 million or more.

Two years ago, Phoebe Golden was kicked in the head with a metal roller skate, leaving her with the kind of concussion that ends the careers of professional athletes.

The traumatic brain injury has greatly impacted her life - now 14, Phoebe has dealt with depression, anorexia nervosa, continued memory loss and nausea. She used to love to ice skate, a sport she had to give up because she doesn't have the balance she once did.

Tampa Bay Times: Editorial: Smart move to go after blight

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman's bold plan to put abandoned properties on the auction block is another positive step in the city's attempt to reduce blight and reinvigorate neighborhoods. If the plan succeeds, hundreds of neglected properties in St. Petersburg would be eligible for purchase and redevelopment. City Council members voted unanimously this week to hire foreclosure lawyers to help steer the city through the process of auctioning deserted properties. The plan could affect more than 400 properties, which combined have accrued about $4 million in fines and liens. The city already takes care of many of these derelict properties, mowing grass and handling other maintenance issues to prevent public safety hazards. Under Kriseman's proposal, the city would auction the properties with the expectation that buyers would rehabilitate them.
