A Message from our Co-Presidents

Fall is officially  here... crisp morning walks, candy corn, pumpkin spiced lattes and cozy hand-knitted sweaters! OK--hand-knitted sweaters might be a challenge -- but we love that so many of you are knitting baby hats for our layettes!!!
This past year many of you expressed interest in volunteering for literacy/tutoring programs -- and we hear you!  We are excited to announce that we have partnered with St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Newark to work with children in their literacy center.  On October 24th several volunteers spent a couple of hours assisting children with their reading.  It was a rewarding and humbling experience and we hope all of you have the opportunity to mentor children in this capacity.  Additional literacy programs are in the planning stages...stay tuned for upcoming information.

Please join us in welcoming our two new board members, Kathi Franolich as VP of Membership and Tina Whitman as Treasurer.  We're excited to have these two enthusiastic women on board!  Special thanks to Maura Perier, our past Treasurer who served on the CCS board since our chapter started in 2007.  Her dedication continues, serving now as an invaluable member of our advisory board.  Lastly, we want to announce Margaret Whelan Strong as our President Elect; she has also served on our board since its inception and has great vision for our organization over the next several years.

So much has happened in just these past two months!  We're inspired by all of you and your dedication to the Christ Child Society.  This Thanksgiving, we give thanks for you. Thank You!

About us

The Christ Child Society of Summit is a qualified 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to serving children in need in our community.  We are one of over 40 chapters of the National Christ Child Society, a non-profit organization founded in 1887 by Mary Virginia Merrick that is dedicated to serving the needs of children and youth, regardless of race or creed, through the personal service of its members.
Christ Child Society of Summit Scholarship

Summit High School senior Kimberly Carvalho received the 2015 Christ Child Society of Summit Scholarship.  The award is presented annually to a student who lives or goes to school in Summit, has displayed academic achievement, demonstrated economic need, and has worked or volunteered with children.

School Supplies Drive
In September, we kicked off another successful School Supplies Drive spearheaded by veteran co-chairs Jane Murphy and Sally Golding. Together with our Bridges partner, we were able to provide 353 Summit students with supplies and a head start to the academic year!

The Rummage Sale

Moving into October, it was hats off to our rummage sale volunteers!  Every year we're amazed by the fabulous treasures you donate from your attics, basements and closets...and despite the rainy day, our sales this year totaled a fantastic $4,000!

Spiritual Morning of Reflection

Also in October, many of you enjoyed our spiritual morning of reflection at St. Josephs Shrine with Dennis Corcoran.  He spoke on "Everyday Spirituality" sharing his thoughts and suggestions on living a daily Christian life.  His special talent for telling stories, both entertaining and inspiring, hit home with our  members and have remained in our thoughts "everyday!"

Literacy News
Starting on October 24th, our chapter is partnering with the Literacy Center at St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Newark. Christ Child volunteers will provide reading support to the children aged 4-15 that visit the soup kitchen.  What a great way to make a great difference in the life of a child!

Knitting Angels
Tiny Toppers 2015
On October 30th, both seasoned and novice knitters gathered at Wool and Grace (our favorite yarn store!) to knit adorable "tiny topper" hats.  These thoughtful hand-knitted items make our layettes uniquely SPECIAL and for that we thank all of our fabulous knitters!
News from National
Lambi Newsham, Christina Amundson and Margaret Strong represented our chapter at the  National Christ Child Society Conference held in the Washington D.C. area. Highlights included a visit to the home of Mary Virginia Merrick (next door to where our member Tracy Stabler grew up).

The Christ Child Society Prayer
"Remember in the sacrifice of Your own and only Child,
all children everywhere throughout the world,
and grant that, like Your Son, as they increase in years,
they may grow in grace and wisdom before You, and in the sight of all,
for the improvement and saving of the world.
Jesus, the Friend of little children, bless the little children of the world."
