Success Story

On Friday, October 16th 2015 Portugal Cove - St. Phillips held their Teen Challenge Event at Leary's Brook Junior High. Over 50 students participated in this event and all teens were very involved and willing to eagerly take part. Students learned basic techniques of kickboxing such as punches, kicks, and knees. They went through stretches, drills and combinations with two Muay Thai instructors. Everyone learned about respect in martial arts and how important it is. Teens got to see a demonstration by the instructors at the end, to highlight what everything can look like when put together. The Teens were impressed and many asked if they could do the event again! It was a huge success! Every teen left with a positive look on their face and they recieved some great feedback as well.

Do you have a teen success story that you would like to share?
Send it to Kate at [email protected] and be featured in the next bi-monthly e-news.

When planning snacks for your Teen Challenge physical activity programs, keep these tips in mind to help stretch your dollar further:

1.
Plan Ahead- include foods you may already have             on hand, and use Canada's Food Guide to make sure you're getting a variety of foods from             the four food groups;

2.     Look For Sales - check flyers before you shop to see what's on sale;

3.     Make a List - make a list of foods you need to buy and stick to it;

4.     Buy Store Brands - they're usually cheaper than brand name items

Try these easy and delicious snack ideas that include food and beverages from Canada's Food Guide:
  • Apple slices and cubes of hard cheese
  • Yogurt and canned fruit
  • Veggies with salad dressing for dip (carrot sticks, celery, snap peas, cherry tomatoes)
  • Yogurt parfaits made with vanilla yogurt, frozen berries, and whole grain cereal
  • Whole wheat toast and peanut butter with canned fruit
  • Air-popped popcorn
  • Fruit salad made with fresh or canned fruit
  • Whole grain cereal and milk
  • Cheese strings and granola bars
