Northwest Designer
Craftsmen

NNWDC LogoWDC has a rich legacy as one of the founding groups of what became America's Studio Movement. The Studio Movement is what the Arts & Crafts Movement evolved into after mass manufacturing won out over hand-crafted production. I am proud to be a member of this historic group that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, while upholding the heritage of the hand-crafted in an over mechanized world. I am honored to be in the company of an amazing group of artists and craftspeople.

Roycroft Renaissance LogoAs a Master Artisan of the Roycroft Renaissance, I have the honor and distinction of working to uphold an important part of America's artistic legacy, as well as the responsibility to keep alive the spirit of art as manifested throughout the ages. It is a rare opportunity and I see it as a great responsibility.

 Bucolic Fall, Bucolic Art

Amidst the mild fall we are having here in the pacific northwest, it is hard to believe the east coast has been so tempestuous. We are glad to report that our families have come through hurricane Sandy unscathed. We know many of our friends and colleagues are currently unable to work and we suspect that our northeast clients we have not heard from are struggling as well.  We wish the best to all of you who were forced to weather that storm and we hope at some point you can take a moment to check in and let us know how you are doing.

A few weeks ago, here in Portland, we were at the peak of our fall season. The leaves of the endangered elms that survive in our neighborhood were a riot of electric green that morphed to a glowing yellow as though on fire. We are in the middle of Indian Summer right now, which was perfect for local trick-or-treaters, and the air is tinged with the autumnal smells of fresh mown grass, the sweet of freshly fallen leaves, and smoke from the first hearth fires.

After a busy summer of helping clients with outdoor design projects and exterior color consultations, we are riding into fall with a string of art exhibitions.
This newsletter is all about art! Next time we'll update you on some recent design projects.

All our best,

Gorge Inspirations

Invitational Art Exhibit

Rowena Plateau Wildflowers
Rowena Plateau Wildflowers 2
I was invited to participate in this special exhibit inspired by the Historic Columbia River Gorge and Highway.

The show titled Gorge Inspirations encouraged artists to express what inspires them about the landscape and history of Oregon's Columbia River Gorge.

I have three new pieces in the show. The work was inspired by a hike that Barbara and I took to see the wildflowers that grow on the Rowena Plateau in the heart of the gorge. I made these special pieces part of my on going series  "Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams". Two are mixed media drawings of flowers that grow on Rowena Plateau, and the other is an Acrylic on Canvas landscape painting titled Among the Fallen.

The opening reception for the exhibit is tonight from 6-8 pm, but there will be many opportunities to engage with the work over the next two months.

Architectural Heritage Center board member, Kristen Stallman  has developed a fabulous series of educational programs to accompany the art.  If you are interested, check the schedule on the AHC website and make plans to attend one or all of the sessions.  Barbara and I will be at the opening reception tonight and also at the December 7th reception. We hope to make some of the programs as well.

All events are free and open to the public, so please pass the invitation along to your friends in the Portland region.

In other news, I was accepted into a group show titled
Visual Poetry, held at the L.H. Horton Art Gallery at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, CA.

The show, which ends this week, was dedicated to visual art inspired by poetry and literature. It was the perfect fit for me as I am so often inspired by literature, and known to write my own prose and poetry to accompany my paintings. I was very excited that Bay Area art dealer and gallerist, Chandra Cerrito juried my work into the exhibit AND that the gallery director chose to use my pieces on the postcard and poster. Chandra wrote a

Barbara and I decided to take a road trip and deliver the art in person so we could attend the opening reception. Many of you have seen my nearly life-sized mixed media pieces, based on the epic 14th century Arthurian poem,
Sir Gawain & the Green Knight. The dual-panel set won the Gallery Award for Best in Show 2D!

These pieces inspired a lot of dialogue and I enjoyed being there to talk to people who were interested in learning more.

Taiga in Green

By CJ Hurley

Look my friend,

for I tell you there is a sign in the landscape.

It breathes with a life more magical and of more consequence than the runes of the most ancient cryptic tome,

far afield of the acrid and caustic air

of our most ingenious industrial machine.

Seduce me not with clever words in praise of the latest even more clever metallurgical device,

for device is another word for a trick -- a ruse, ever producing noxious outpourings of poisonous waste

in mockery of the pure waft of a rain swept morn.

Addiction is borne on the heel of dependence.

Answers and truth and mastery are not the bedfellows

of the synthetic.

Look to the river

the sea,

the stone,

and the tree.

In other news, We're pleased to report that the NBC television show Grimm has renewed it's contract to continue using my artwork for the show. They recently rented three paintings for filming in the second season.

Pieces to look out for are Rose and Landscape a painting from my series Five Statements on the Rose, Forest & Stream (seen several times in season

All three are watercolors from my limited edition catalog paintings, which means you can purchase your very own hand-painted original! See them on our website
