The Studio Movement is what the Arts & Crafts Movement evolved into after mass manufacturing won out over hand-crafted production. I am proud to be a member of this historic group that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, while upholding the heritage of the hand-crafted in an over mechanized world. The Poetic Art of CJ Hurley
Thank you to everyone who came to our show opening on August 5th! It was a special night full of the high energy and abundant enthusiasm brought by you all! Part of the magic of the art experience is all of the energy, enthusiasm, and spirit brought by the people who come to interact with the work on display. Thank you for sharing your passion, it made the evening very special indeed.

Poetry Reading This Saturday, September 17th Doors open: 10:30 am; Reading: 11:00 am - noon 701 SE Grand Ave. Portland, OR Join us for a riveting visual and auditory experience as visiting author, S. Alexander Smith, performs a dramatic reading of the poetry CJ wrote to accompany his paintings for this exhibit. This will be an interactive and engaging reading that will help viewers to see the art in a new way. CJ & Susan will be present to answer questions and talk to attendees after the performance. 
S. Alexander Smith is a novelist, actor, librarian, and founding member of Buffalo's Hag Theatre. Based in NY, she is visiting Portland to perform this reading and to participate in the filming of a documentary video on CJ and his art. 
Lecture and Artist Talk - Romanticism: Its legacy and connection to the art of CJ Hurley Thursday, September 29th 6pm In his presentation, CJ will discuss the Romantic Movement including Art, Poetry and Fiction. He will offer his insight into Romanticism's continuing presence in the modern world. CJ sees Romantic thought as an essential part of being human and has a special regard for Romanticism's position regarding nature. This is a topic he often explores in his art and he will be relating these themes to the work on exhibit. More information.

CJ's Paintings to appear on
NBC's Grimm!

We are super excited to share with you that some of CJ's paintings were selected for use on the set of NBC's new supernatural thriller, Grimm.

The producer's found CJ's picturesque art a perfect fit for the theme of the show, and we've recently found out that the production team chose two paintings [shown here] for use in the filming. Grimm takes place in, and is filmed in Portland, and they scout for art at the Portland Art Museum Sales Gallery where CJ is represented.
Now, of course, we have to watch the show to see if they survived the editing room floor, or actually made the cut! If you plan to watch the show and see these paintings, let us know! The series is scheduled to premiere in October. |

Pasadena in October
We hope to see you in Pasadena next month for Craftsman Weekend. We're planning to bring the Houses, Landscapes, Flowers and Dreams exhibit and look forward to sharing it with everyone there.

Grant Funding to
document CJ's art
We are pleased to relate that CJ has been awarded a professional development grant by the Regional Arts and Culture Council to create a short documentary about his art.
This is exciting news for us, but the film process is new to us -- it's been fun and a bit intimidating, but things are going well!
We are fortunate to have a dynamic team willing to give their time and creative energy to this project:

When the project is complete, it will be shared with galleries & museums around the country. It will also be available to the public on our website.

Sketchbook Tour Concludes

After touring 9 locations in 6 states, the 2011 Sketchbook Project tour is over. CJ's contribution, The Book of Insight, joined 10,000 others on a whirlwind tour of America and now that it is over, the sketchbooks are on permanent exhibit in their new home, the Brooklyn Art Library in NYC.
Thanks to everyone around the country who visited the Project's host galleries and asked to see CJ's book! CJ found it to be a tremendous and rewarding experience.
In the wake of the tour, we are in the process of archiving CJ's sketchbook, and creating a digital book of all of the images for the public to enjoy. Our Graphic Design Intern, Chlo� Miller, has been hard at work making this compilation a reality! Chlo� and former intern, Cory Griffin, conducted weekly interviews with CJ in order to probe the meaning and symbolism behind each of the images. It has been fun and sometimes difficult to document CJ's complex iconography, but they have done a great job!
Chlo� hopes to have the book completed soon and we'll be sure to let you know when it is available to access.

"It Shot, It Hit"

This painting is an abstract exploration of active Zen meditation through the vehicle of Kyudo (Japanese archery). It is an abstract illustration of the moment when the duality of the archer and the target dissolves and one is a part of the other. When the Buddha mind of the unconscious unites with the conscious, a state of selflessness occurs and the arrow can be loosed without effort. The shot becomes "spiritual" at this moment and is the shot that cannot be missed.

"Rose and Moon"

Rose & Moon is the third in my series "Five Statements on The Rose". The series celebrates the phases in nature: growth, renewal, night, day, and the passage of time through the solar cycle and the moon's phases. These paintings explore the mystery of solar and lunar polarities. Given a male and female association, the lunar rose is the feminine principle, while the sun is the masculine.
