N WDC has a rich legacy as one of the founding groups of what became America's Studio Movement. The Studio Movement is what the Arts & Crafts Movement evolved into after mass manufacturing won out over hand-crafted production. I am proud to be a member of this historic group that is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art, while upholding the heritage of the hand-crafted in an over mechanized world. I am honored to be in the company of an amazing group of artists and craftspeople.

Spring Greetings
Sun is coming to Portland and excitement is in the air! Our friends and family back east have been enjoying warmth for a while, but we've just started making it into the 70's. The garden we've been working on for five years is finally showing us that we designed well. It is lush and beautiful with the spring rains. We're looking forward to warm summer nights sitting amidst the plants and enjoying the fruits of our labors.
We hope spring is finding you well and you can take some time to enjoy the beauty of nature around you.

The documentary about CJ and his art is complete and it is time for us to share it!
We want to thank everyone who joined us last for the premiere screening of the film. It was the perfect way to celebrate the completion of this project. We were excited by the turn out, the enthusiasm and kind remarks about the film, and enjoyed our time with all of you who joined us for the after party at the Record Room!
More screenings are being planned for Portland, OR, Buffalo, NY, and locations in North Carolina. We'll keep you posted on opportunities to see the film.

Great appreciation goes to our filmmaker, Michael Thanhouser, for his dedication, hard work and vision for the film. He made us work hard but we couldn't have done it without him. He is a very talented young professional and we are excited to see how his career develops over the coming years.
We also need to recognize all of the participants and contributors to the film: Elliot Anderson [Photographer], Carolyn Campbell [Creative Consultant, Speaker & Author], Jim Davies [CJ & Barbara's former art instructor, mentor & founder of the Art Department at Rockingham Community College in NC], John Graeter [Gallerist and owner of Graeter Art Gallery, Portland, OR], Dale Scott [Art Collector], S. Alexander Smith [Author, Actor & lifetime friend of CJ's], Jennifer Zika [Director of the Rental Sales Gallery at Portland Art Museum].
These people took time from their busy lives to reflect on CJ's work and eloquently put into words their thoughts on the significance of CJ as an artist. The film is a great success because of their contributions. Thank you all!

Attendees are sure to be delighted by the work in the show. NWDC is a well respected professional group whose artists produce work of the highest quality. We expect to see ceramics, woodwork, textiles, glass and mixed media pieces in addition to three paintings by CJ.
We're excited about this show and we love the Maude Kerns Gallery, housed in a beautiful historic church on the edge of the University of Oregon.

CJ's thoughts on Art
Artist's Rights After Death: Taking Art Out of the Context Intended by the Artist
 The following piece really strikes a chord in my heart.
Often I have argued over the misappropriation of art, by later generations, from its original intention as directed by the artist.
 Sorely, artists in Arts & Crafts circles, from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, to Frank Lloyd Wright have had their works stripped from their creators' original intent in the name of profiteering, or free license.
Therefore, I was struck by this article regarding a work of art by Matisse that has been taken out of it's originally intended context. It was eye opening to hear a later generation artist like Matisse discuss his work in the sort of site specific terms as the Arts & Crafts founders would have done, it is the same voice -- one I find most valid. Matisse is referring to a site specific work he did for an architectural space and relates that the painting can only exist in one place:
"I only know one thing, the place it must be part of, and the spirit of the milieu in which it should sing." He goes on to say that his painting is not of itself, but is part and parcel of the architecture: "It is a room for paintings; to treat my decoration like another picture would be out of place. My aim has been to translate paint into architecture, to make of the [painting] the equivalent of stone or cement. This, I think, is not often done any more. The mural painter today makes pictures, not murals."
I thank Tyler Green for bringing this serious subject to the public's attention and for taking a stance in regard to artistic intention. You can read the entire blog here. It is well worth the read.
