Award-Winning Local Chef Headlines New Metairie Restaurant
Chef Mike Gowland prepares his renowned Creole cuisine in the kitchen of Rocksy's
New Orleans, La. - A new restaurant has graced Metairie, with local celebrity Chef Mike Gowland serving
up the fare. Rocksy's, a 50's themed, All-American café, is now open for business and located at 3220 Edenborn Avenue.
Guests will find Mike's signature Creole influence throughout the menu, which features classic American dishes, including
chicken parmesan, pulled pork and even pancakes. Each item is made from scratch in-house and given a "down home"
facelift. Pork tenderloin, for example, is served atop a homemade apricot glaze and creole corn cheese grits. Several of
Mike's well-loved dishes, such as a rotating gumbo selection, crawfish beignets and shrimp creole are featured at the new
restaurant.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees are all available to enjoy, and a kids' menu is also featured for children ages 10 and
under. Wine, beer and cocktails grace the menu, along with a bottomless mimosa special available for Sunday brunch from
9 AM - 11 PM.
"I've always been passionate about the culinary traditions of Louisiana. It's in my blood. For 30 years, I've been cooking
these types of dishes for my family," says Chef Mike. "I'm excited to share these flavors with all of New Orleans now."
Chef Mike has been a local favorite at The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival for several years - his "Fireman Mike's
Kitchen" booth serves up gallons of gumbo, alligator sauce picante and other fried creations each Spring, including several
desserts. His innovative flavors and natural culinary talents earned him a stint on the Food Network's popular show
"Chopped" in 2012, where he won his episode with a bread pupping recipe served up with a whiskey diplomat sauce. He
went on to also win "Deep Fried Masters" last year, a new show on Destination America. Chef Mike is also recently retired
as a fire captain with the New Orleans Fire Department.
"This is a new adventure for me and a great change of pace from anything I've ever done. I look forward to settling into this
role and working closely with Rocksy's staff in creating a casual, relaxing environment where anyone can enjoy some great
comfort food, morning or night," says Mike.
The restaurant's aesthetic features traditional 50's décor, complete with red barstools and booths and a kitchen-facing bar
counter where hungry patrons can grab a seat and watch the kitchen at work. A jukebox near the entrance greets diners as
they enter, and a video poker room is tucked away toward the back booths.
Rocksy's is open seven days a week from 6:30 AM - 11 PM. To contact Rocksy's, call 504-889-7064. To view the menu
and learn more, visit www.rocksys.org. Fans can also follow along on Facebook at www.facebook.com/rocksysrestaurant

Krewe of Muses Announces 2016 Honorary Muse -
Solange Knowles

New Orleans, LA - The Krewe of Muses announced that New Orleans resident, Solange Knowles, the singer/songwriter, founder of Saint Records and noted creative director will serve as the Krewe's Honorary Muse for the 2016 parade. As the Honorary Muse, Solange will lead the carnival organization's sixteenth parade, on February 4, 2016. Solange will ride in the Krewe of Muses's iconic shoe float, a 17-foot tall fiber optic encrusted red pump.
The Krewe of Muses is a non-profit women's organization that puts on a beloved parade attended by hundreds of thousands of revelers in New Orleans each year on the Thursday night before Mardi Gras. The Honorary Muse is selected annually to honor a female role model who inspires the women of Muses by contributing to the arts in extraordinary ways and embodying the creative spirit of the nine original muses of Greek mythology.
"We are honored to have Solange Knowles as our 2016 Honorary Muse. As a creative powerhouse, she embodies the spirit for which the Muses are known, and serves as an inspiration to all New Orleans girls and future Muses. Her bright personality will dazzle all those on the parade route as she leads the Muses in our Krewe's signature red high-heel shoe," said Krewe of Muses Captain Staci Rosenberg.
Says Solange Knowles, "It is a true and incredible honor to be the 2016 Honorary Muse. I am immensely humbled to join such an inspiring organization that celebrates such diversity, leadership, and philanthropy. The Krewe of Muses and I share the same passion for rejoicing in the overall magic and bad ass-ness of girlhood and all of the many ways we are able to express and embody being women!" Adds Solange, "As the granddaughter of Agnez Dereon and Lumis Albert Beyince of New Iberia, Louisiana, I moved to New Orleans to be closer to my roots, for deeper self-reflection, and to be in the midst of a continuously inspiring and rich culture that I feel an endless amount of connection and gratitude for. This city has shown me the universe in ways I could never put in words, and I can't wait to celebrate all of it right on top of that red high heeled shoe."
About Solange Knowles: Solange Piaget Knowles is an American singer, songwriter, artistic director and record label founder. Expressing an interest in music from an early age, Knowles released her first studio album Solo Star (2003) at the impressive age of 16, as well as her sophomore album Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams, and the critically acclaimed True, leading her to grace stages at international festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Jazz Fest, Letterman, Fallon and more. Her presence and collaborations among contemporary artists have found her as a past performer for the MoMA Museum Armory show, The New Museum, ICA Boston, Dallas Museum of Art, as well within installations at Art Basel Miami and Switzerland.
In 2013, Solange launched her own record label, Saint Records. Her label is designed to give new and ingenious artists a space to create their music and circulate their art. In 2013, Saint Records released its first album Saint Heron - a collaborative compilation album featuring 11 independent artists telling their unique stories on one innovative platform. Solange has also been widely recognized as a fashion icon, and has art directed two footwear collections with Puma to date as well as curatorial projects for Microsoft, alongside artist Mickalene Thomas, and New Orleans' own Prospect 3.
She has partnered with the Make it Right Foundation and several other New Orleans non-profit organizations such as Son of a Saint, a mentorship program created by Sonny Lee, for young men who have lost their fathers in the local area. Additionally, her philanthropic work includes working alongside 14 plus, Water for people, and Africa's Out on improving the progression of education, water needs, and Rights for the LGBT community in many countries in Africa.

Krewe of Muses
Established in 2000, the Muses organization has over 1,500 members. A centerpiece of the Krewe's vision is philanthropic activities and the incorporation of the local artistic and cultural resources of the community creating Muses Mardi Gras traditions for parade goers and carnival season enthusiasts to enjoy. The 2016 Muses parade will roll on Thursday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m. The parade will follow the extended route, beginning at the corner of Magazine St. and Jefferson Ave., proceeding down Magazine to Napoleon Ave., where it resumes the traditional St. Charles Ave. route.

Cup Art Contest Winner New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy Student Darrell Donaldson

The winner of the 2016 annual Mardi Gras Cup Art Contest is Darrell Donaldson of New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy. The annual competition is an activity planned by the Muses Community Outreach Committee.

Muses Board member and Chair of Community Outreach Kathy Conklin said, "The artistic talent shown in the submissions continues to amaze us every year. We are proud to support art programs across the Greater New Orleans Area. Our mission is to ensure that students like Darrell have opportunities to express themselves artistically and contribute to the rich culture of Mardi Gras and of our city."
The cup design is printed on more than 80,000 cups, which will be thrown by Krewe members from the Muses floats on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. In addition, Darrell's design, along with submitted artwork from eight other artists and artwork from each year the Krewe has rolled, are currently featured in the "Krewe of Muses Mardi Gras Student Cup Design Exhibition" at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

This year, students were asked to design artwork inspired by this year's slogan from ancient Greek poet Hesiod, "Happy are they whom the Muses love." Darrell's winning design depicts symbols of literature, science, and the arts sent down from the sky by the Goddesses to rejoicing people below. In Greek mythology, the Muses are the Greek goddesses who preside over the arts and sciences. They were believed to inspire artists, especially poets, philosophers and musicians. The Krewe of Muses holds this contest each year to celebrate both the artistic and the educational aspects of the nine goddesses.

CITY TO HOST TRAININGS FOR CONTRACTORS ON 'HireNOLA' AND DBE PROGRAM RULES
NEW ORLEANS-The City of New Orleans will  kick off a series of free seminars to provide training on its new Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) contract and labor compliance software systems and HireNOLA policy. The trainings are open to the public and will be held at Delgado Community College City Park Campus, H. Giles Hall, 615 City Park Ave., New Orleans, LA  70119.

In October 2015, the New Orleans City Council passed Mayor Landrieu's 'HireNOLA' policy that requires contractors with city contracts valued at $150,000 and above to prioritize Orleans Parish residents when hiring. HireNOLA requires contractors to use the City as its first source for recruitment, referrals and placement of new hires on applicable contracts. It will also require contractors working on applicable projects to demonstrate good faith efforts to hire local and disadvantaged workers.  Applicable contracts include any contract to which the City is a party for construction, alteration or demolition of public buildings or public works of the City of New Orleans in excess of $150,000; and any Cooperative Endeavor Agreement to which the City is a party and through which the City provides tax incentives for economic development projects in excess of $150,000.

In December 2015, the New Orleans City Council unanimously passed Mayor Landrieu's DBE rules strengthening the City's policy to ensure  participation of disadvantaged business enterprises (DBE) in City contracts. The new rules reform the DBE program, bringing it in line with best practices from around the country. It is the product of collaborative work with stakeholders from the DBE and prime contractor community. Revisions include:

*  Restrictions on DBE subcontracting and modification of DBE firms;
*  Strengthened Good Faith Effort requirements throughout the life of the contract; and
*  Establishment of penalties for non-compliance.

Tuesday, January 12th
6-7:30PM

Great evil is stirring and it has its sights set on acquiring an ancient power source unknown to the inhabitants of a distant planet lost in time. The alien presence in search of the instruments of this power has set in motion events centered on the kingdom and city-state, Brigini'i, of King Dia. A Cyclops leads a huge army of orcs and goblins on an invasion of the king's realm as Methnorick, the evil magician behind these machinations, has dark elves kidnap the king's daughter, Shermee. As these evil doings unfold, the king is hosting his annual games of battle, magic and thievery. Humans, dwarves, elves, giants, magicians and Druids have gathered to test their mettle and be recognized as the winners of the games.

Every year, the king then sends the winners on a quest to find a treasure or perform other important feats. They are awarded for their success with lands and titles. This year, however, King Dia splits the winners into two groups and sends them in different directions in hopes of rescuing his daughter. Hailed as "the future of chamber music" (Strings), the game-changing string quartet Brooklyn Rider presents eclectic repertoire and gripping performances that continue to draw rave reviews from classical, world, and rock critics alike. Through visionary programming and global collaborations, Brooklyn Rider's "down-to-earth demeanor ... demystifies contemporary classical music and invites everyone into the tent" (Time Out New York).

Last season the group celebrated its tenth anniversary with the groundbreaking multi-disciplinary project Brooklyn Rider Almanac, for which it recorded and toured 15 specially commissioned works, each inspired by a different artistic muse. Other recent recording projects include 2013's A Walking Fire on Mercury Classics and The Impostor with Béla Fleck on Deutsche Grammophon/Mercury Classics, plus 2011's much-praised Brooklyn Rider Plays Philip Glass on the composer's Orange Mountain Music label.

A public radio favorite, Brooklyn Rider has been featured on NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts, On Point, All Songs Considered, Deceptive Cadence, and All Things Considered; WNYC's Soundcheck; and American Public Media's Performance Today; as well as on NY1 television in New York City. The ensemble's recordings are played across North America on stations ranging in focus from classical to world, jazz, pop, and new music.

Brooklyn Rider will appear as part of the Friends of Music concert season at Tulane University's Dixon Hall on Tuesday, January 12 at 8 p.m. with an program including pieces by contemporary composers as well as the great "Rosamunde" quartet by Schubert (No. 13 in A minor). Ingredients
  1. 2 teaspoons olive oil
  2. 2 cups red onions, sliced Lyonnaise-style (thinly from end to end)
  3. 1/4 cup shallot, finely diced
  4. 2 cups seeded and diced tomatoes
  5. 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  6. 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  7. 2 teaspoons tomato paste
  8. 1 cup beef broth or stock
  9. 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
  10. Freshly ground black pepper
  11. 8-10 basil leaves cut into fine chiffonade (strips)
Instructions
  1. Heat a small saucepan over medium-high heat and add the oil, onions, shallots and a heavy pinch of salt and toss to coat with the oil.
  2. Reduce the heat to low and allow the onions and shallots to soften then caramelize for about 15 minutes, stirring often.
  3. Stir in brown sugar, then the tomatoes, followed by the tomato paste and vinegar. Simmer until the mixture is thick and bubbly.
  4. Stir in the broth and reduce to a jam-like consistency over medium-low heat.
  5. Remove from heat and set half the mixture aside. Puree the other half and fold it back into the reserved mixture.
  6. Fold in the basil and allow to sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and black pepper if desired.
  8. Yield: 2 cups

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Wednesday, January 13, 6-8pm: Henri Bungener, Clos de Caveau in Vacqueryas (Rhone Valley, France) - Henri will join us for a special flight of wines on Wednesday where he'll be pouring 2 wines from his estate in Vacqueryas and 2 from small artisan French producers he is representing.  Clos de Caveau is his 50-acre estate situated along the slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail and overlooks the Rhône Valley. At an altitude of 650 feet above sea level, their organic vines are not only grown at higher altitudes than most areas of Vacqueyras, they are also naturally isolated into a single plot protected by a band of forest giving it an ideal microclimate and geographical conditions. During this tasting, you will be poured a flight of 4 wines and Henri will visit you personally at your table to discuss the wines, giving you time for personal contact and any questions you may have while you taste the wines. The flight is $15 and reservations are recommended - you can do so here: Henri Burgener

Ogden After Hours - Greg Schatz .
  • 05:30 PM - 08:00 PM

Greg Schatz plays music that gets stuck in your head. Steeped in tradition, yet completely original, Schatz's songs give words to life's hard-to-describe moments. Schatz has been writing and performing his own music since he was a teenager in Ithaca, New York in the 1980's. He moved to New Orleans in 1995 to play accordion with the Big Mess Blues Band and subsequently took up the upright bass in the trio Jeremy Lyons & the Deltabilly Boys. In 1999 he started his own band and released three albums under the name Schatzy. On his last album, Where the River Meets the Rail Road Tracks (September 2012), Schatz went solo and took the band with him. Where the River Meets the Rail Road Tracks, featured the musicians Schatz had been playing with for years: Doug Garrison (The Iguanas) on drums, Alex McMurray on guitar, Dave Stover on bass, and a host of other New Orleans musical luminaries. Schatz has performed around the U.S. and Europe at festivals and clubs, big and small.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.

A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)

This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.

Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

The Pussyfooters all-female marching group will be the first to admit it doesn't take much to get them dancing in the streets. So when you combine a good party with a good purpose, well, let's just say it's on with the Blush Ball-a Party with a Purpose 2016!
Slated for Friday, Jan. 15 at Generations Hall in New Orleans, Blush Ball 2016 promises to be bigger and bolder than ever, and proceeds once again go to benefit Metropolitan Center for Women and Children. The theme of this year's Party with a Purpose is "Are You Blushing?" and the evening's entertainment lineup is sure to make you blush. Live music by The Soul Rebels headlines the event along with DJ Ronnie Roux, MC Fresh Johnson and, of course, special performances by the Pussyfooters. Fabulous prizes will also be raffled and available for bidding in a silent auction.
The iconic Pussyfooters are 100-plus members strong, all women over 30, parading in their trademark pink plumage and corsets in nearly 50 parades, fundraisers and special events year round. The annual Blush Ball is their signature event having raised more than $90,000 for Metro Center in the past five years.
The Blush Ball is a well-attended costume party that embodies the energy and passion of this dynamic group of women. Founded in New Orleans in 2001, it's safe to say the Pussyfooters led the way for the recent boom in women's (and men's) dance groups. But the ladies are quick to point out they were not the first-they got their inspiration from the original women of New Orleans' unique parading and second line culture.
Before they lace up their signature white Doc Marten boots and hit the streets as the pink glittery army, the women of the Pussyfooters represent a variety of professions, body types, ethnicities and ages. The Pussyfooters are doctors, teachers, attorneys, artists, engineers, writers, accountants, entrepreneurs, mothers, aunties, sisters, wives, grandmothers and more.
The Pussyfooters' support for Metro Center for Women and Children was a natural fit for this group that encourages empowerment, self-confidence and sisterhood. But make no mistake - they have a good time doing it. The Pussyfooters' motto is: "We areMajorettes from the Mothership sent here to help the party people get their groove on!"
And the party people will no doubt be gettin' their groove on Jan. 15 at Generations Hall!
###
Blush Ball - a Party with a Purpose 2016 is Jan. 15, 9 p.m.-12 a.m. at Generations Hall, 310 Andrew Higgins Drive, New Orleans, LA. The signature event hosted by the Pussyfooters all-female marching group is a fundraiser for Metropolitan Center for Women & Children (www.mcwcgno.org). Advance tickets are $40 general admission and $60 for the Patron Party from 8-9 p.m., A limited number of VIP tables are available. Tickets are now available at www.blushball.org, through any Pussyfooters member, and at Miss Claudia's on Magazine Street. For more information about the Pussyfooters, visit www.pussyfooters.org
