A Cele bra tion of Volunteerism
A retiree who devotes 40 hours a week helping fellow seniors navigate the complexities of Medicare Part D. A mentor whose 13-year-old Junior Friend's says she's her BFF. A Concord small business owner whose fundraising efforts over the past decade have helped raise nearly $9,000 to shelter homeless families. And a Lakes Region senior who spends hundreds of hours volunteering each school year in a classroom helping children learn to read.

These are just four of the 800 Friends Program volunteers whose time, talent, and ceaseless devotion strengthen our community. On October 1, Trustees, staff, and sponsors came together to celebrate their efforts that build relationships and restore faith in the human spirit.

The event also gave the Friends Program the opportunity to recognize the herculean efforts of Bob Couch, a former Trustee who was presented with the 8th annual James S. Doremus Award.


Merrimack County Savings Bank CEO Paul Rizzi helped us recognize how our volunteers strengthen the community. Rizzi spoke from the heart in describing the profound impact Friends volunteers have on the lives of so many throughout Merrimack County and beyond.

Victoria Chafee - or "Grammy Vickie" as her Sanbornton Central students call her - was recognized by Foster Grandparent Program Coordinator Anne Sanuth (left). "Vickie helps students feel safe and gets them excited to learn," Sanuth said. The program receives major funding from the Corporation for Community and National Service, which was represented by Eileen Smart (right).


Former Trustee Bob Couch (right) was the recipient of the 8th annual James S. Doremus Award. In addition to serving on the Friends Board, Couch tirelessly devoted himself to planning the organization's annual auction fundraiser. Couch personally crafted a number of pieces for the events.


Lincoln Financial Foundation Program Officer Byron Champlin and RSVP Coordinator Jennifer Army at the October 1 recognition event. Last month, the Lincoln Financial Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to support the Friends Emergency Housing Program.
