Music Fest for Vets - On  Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, VFW Hall Post 9885 on Hix Road in Westland will play host to "Music Fest for Vets."  It started out as "Vet Fest" in 2006 and has grown bigger and better each year.  It is now one of the premiere music showcases in Michigan.  The event runs from 1pm to 1am on Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 10:0 p.m. on Sunday.  Come out and see over twenty bands on two outdoor stages.  In addition to all of the great live music; there will be food, drinks, entertainment, raffles and other activities.  All proceeds will go to the Wounded Warriors Project and to Veterans Haven of Westland.  The post is located at 6440 North Hix Road.

Monday Madness at the Westland Municipal Golf Course - Don't miss out on a great deal every Monday from noon - 5 p.m. at the Westland Municipal Golf Course, located at 500 S. Merriman Rd.  Enjoy 9 holes of golf, an electric cart, hot dog, medium soda and a bag of chips for only $20 or $15 for senior citizens.  For more information please contact the Golf Course at (734) 721-6660.


Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location.

-There will be a Disability Concerns  meeting on Monday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
-The Study Session regarding Simple Recycling on Monday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
-The Westland City Council will meet on Monday, July 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
-There will be a meeting of the Housing Commission on Tuesday, July 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dorsey Center, located at 32715 Dorsey.
-The Parks and Recreation Advisory Council will meet on Wednesday, July 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
-The Downtown Development Authority will meet on Thursday, July 23 at 12:00 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

Community Foundation's "Christmas in July" - The Westland Community Foundation will be holding their "Christmas in July" event on Thursday, July 23 at 6:00 p.m.  This year, the event will be located in the Grande Ballroom of Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.   The evening will have music from Danny Albani and the Cruisers, Michigan craft beer and wines, and great food.  This is also the time when the Community Foundation awards scholarships for deserving high school students so that they can continue their education at the next level.  Tickets for this event are $30 and you can call to reserve them at (734)595-7727.

 

Westland Shopping Center's 50th Anniversary - The Westland Shopping center is achieving a milestone by celebrating its 50th anniversary as a premier shopping center that continues to be a community-focused and customer favorite destination.  They will celebrate on Saturday, July 25 beginning at 11:00 a.m. and lasting until 9:00 p.m.  During this birthday bash celebration, customers who redeem receipts from Westland Shopping Center merchants totaling $200 dated July 22-July 29, 2015 will receive a $20 gift card.  The Motown Experience takes center stage at 3 p.m. for a free concert.  The musical group is an all-star lineup of world-class vocalists drawn from the ranks of the legendary groups that made many of these songs timeless classics. While watching dazzling choreography, families are invited to dance and sing along. This dynamic group is assembled from members of The Capitols, The Miracles and former members of The Temptations.  Guests will also be treated to a custom commemorative Westland Shopping Center Sanders candy bar with chances to win mall gift cards in the mounts of $20, $50, $100, to $250 along with concert tickets and a grand prize of a $500 shopping spree. Visitors can also take advantage of free swing dance lessons provided by award winning, The Dance Academy, at 4:30 p.m. at the center stage and by 5:30 p.m. can try out their newly acquired dance skills to the sounds of The Rhythm Society Swing Orchestra.  The orchestra specializes in true vintage swing music and the band covers top venues throughout the Midwest.  This 15-piece swing band will also perform at 7:15 p.m. In celebrating the mall's rich retail history local artists and vendors will also be on hand during the celebration to sell all things Detroit made merchandise.

 

 

Enjoy Hines Drive - Six miles of Hines Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic every Saturday from May 2 until September 26.  Each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. you can walk, run, skate or cycle safely as Hines Drive shuts down for vehicular traffic from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive.  Parking is available at the Hines Park-Helms Haven Area and Hines Park-Nankin Mills Picnic Area.  For more information, visit www.parks.waynecounty.com.
