Second Quarter 2015 Newsletter

From the President | June 2015

New NAPAMA Logo

I look around and realize that suddenly it's summer and I wonder just exactly how the time went by so quickly.  It feels like APAP was only a month or so ago and the retreat just ended last week.  But, time has a way of sneaking up on us and, before we know it, we'll all be up to our eyeballs with Regionals.  So, before it gets too far removed, I want to thank everyone involved with the remarkable retreat we had last month.  The weather, the venue and, most notably, the conversations and exchange of information and knowledge was extraordinary.  If you've not had the opportunity to attend a retreat, you owe it to yourself to make it to one and you'll be able to read more about last month's event later in the newsletter.  You will also find lots of info about the upcoming conferences and yes, there will be a caravan this year. We are still working out the customs issues on moving in and out of Canada and more details are coming soon.  There is more info below but keep an eye out for upcoming NAPAMA alerts for full details.

I want to wish everyone a great summer and remember, make sure you take time for yourself and your families the next few months - the fall conferences will be here before any of us realize it!

~Jerry Ross, President

Retreat Recap and Photos
Thanks to all who joined us for the 5th Agents & Managers Retreat in Ft. Lauderdale this May. Here are some of the comments we've heard in our evaluations so far.

I enjoyed it a lot, was great to be around my colleagues in a totally different, relaxed environment!

Highly educational, encouraging, supportive, fun!

Appropriate depth of information in some key areas. Good speakers, good colleagues.

Good mix of topics.

It's amazing to be in a non-competitive environment and learn how my peers conduct business and deal with the various pressures.

Like getting a college semester of valuable knowledge in 2 days. Then there is the social end that builds relationships that can turn into project partnerships. Finally there is simply the FUN relaxed environment all this good stuff happens in. Invaluable.

Educational, collegial, insightful.

Caravan Update
We will be operating the annual caravan again this year but are still working out details.  We are figuring out how to work out handling the customs clearance issues.  We may wind up having to have all your materials shipped to a collection point in the U.S. and then shipped across the border to show site...or directly into Canada to a clearance company to handle.  It's going to be a bit more than we are all accustomed to spending so we are working hard to make it as inexpensive as possible.  Make sure to watch for the upcoming NAPAMA alerts for more info.  Or you can check in with Jerry Ross - jross@harmonyartists.com - for additional details.
Technological Systems Update regarding Visas
Technological Systems Issue
June 17, 2015
Visa Systems Issues
The Bureau of Consular Affairs continues to experience technical problems with our visa systems. This is a global issue, and we are working around the clock to fix it. More than 100 computer experts from both the private and public sectors across the United States are working on this problem 24/7. That said, we do not expect the system will be online before next week.
Read the entire update here.
CAPACOA Update
Below is a link to a press release from CAPACOA about the action taken by the advisory group about the Regulation 105. You will note the links on the press release which will take you to the actual letter sent to Govt of Canada, and the link that takes you to more info about the Reg 105, a required withholding tax on fees paid to foreign artists.

CPAE Update
The fifth year of Certification for Performing Arts Executives / CPAE begins on October 13. Specifically designed for agents and managers, company directors, artists, and presenters who want to expand their knowledge of the industry, certification helps you better negotiate and build career success and achieve goals in an increasingly competitive field. Seasoned industry professionals teach the online classes on the second Tuesday of the month, October through May. The full certification program consists of 8, 3-hour classes offered through The University of New Orleans' Program in Arts Administration. Scholarships are available through NAPAMA and Arts Northwest if you register for all eight sessions at once. Read more about the program and scholarship process here.
