Letter from Laurie
Dear Friend,

The month of August, beginning with National Night Out, has sparked conversations on community-police relations throughout the 35th Council District.

Last week, I introduced two bills that will help improve public safety for the nearly 8.5 million residents of New York City (additional details on the bills are enclosed below in the legislative update). As Chair of the Committee on Women's Issues, I have worked with several advocates to gain a greater insight on the issues that we must resolve in order to improve accessibility and transparency. I look forward to the hearings that will be scheduled within the next several weeks to further discuss and assess the potential impact of implementing the measures required by Int. 868 and 869.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the New York City Department of Citywide and Administrative Services (DCAS) will make a thorough presentation on how to apply and become a civil servant. If you or someone you know is interested in working for the City of New York, I encourage you to attend one of these upcoming sessions.

Additionally, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James will host a Public Safety Town Hall Meeting this Wednesday in the neighborhood of Fort Greene.

I hope that you will continue to interact with my office, exchanging ideas and solutions to improve our district, city, and state.

Yours in Partnership,
Laurie A. Cumbo
Member of the New York City Council

National Night Out

The future of the 84th Police Precinct looks bright and diverse at National Night Out. These incredible young people are the Explorers for the 84th Precinct and I love that they are of all backgrounds and nationalities and I love that there are four women!
35th District Beautification

The cleanliness and beautification of city streets often reflects the pride and sense of community exemplified by area residents. The NYC Cleanup Initiative was a wonderful opportunity to partner with local organizations citywide to enhance the quality of life for residents and small business owners. During the warmer months of the year, The Horticultural Society of New York installed guards and plants in the neighborhood of Crown Heights along Nostrand Avenue.
Bereavement Notices
I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the affected family and friends.
