Legacy Parks is a non profit organization dedicated to leaving East Tennessee better than we found it. We are proud to announce that we are partnering with the foundation to design and install a trail located across the street from South Doyle Middle School. This property is 100 acres so we have plenty to work with! We are currently in the planning process and would love to hear from the community. We want this space to be utilized by people of all ages for multiple uses. If you have suggestions, comments, or concerns that you would like to voice, please email our coordinator, Kelly Bekele, at [email protected]

Gardening

Tips:

 - Keep an eye on everything you have newly planted. Check your plants everyday and make sure they have enough water.

- Be sure to mow you lawn at the correct height. For turf-type fescues and bluegrass, have your mowing height to 2 ? ". The higher you cut your lawn the deeper the roots will grow helping it survive dry spells. Do not lime or fertilize your fescue or bluegrass lawns until late summer.

- Deadhead or prune back spent flowers on your perennials. This will manicure your garden and can stimulate reblooming of delphinum and columbine as well as other perennials.

- Be sure to train new vines onto trellis or posts with the aid of twine. Plastic twine should be used to support the weight of the vine throughout the growing season.

All Hands On Deck!
By Mel Kersey
The time for outdoor living has arrived! Getting outside in the evening shade after a long work day helps you unwind and recharge. If you need a good outdoor space for rest and relaxation, adding a deck to your property is an excellent choice.

According to U.S. News and World Report, adding a new deck is one of the five best investments you can make in your home. "
Homeowners who add a wooden deck to their properties recoup on average nearly 81 percent of the project's cost when they sell the home, according to the report. Celia Kuperszmid Lehrman, deputy home editor at Consumer Reports, says the wooden deck's appeal is linked to today's more thrift-conscious consumers, who are looking to save money by spending more time at home. 'Since they are staying home they want to enjoy their exterior, they want to enjoy their outdoors,' Kuperszmid Lehrman says. 'So [adding a deck] is one of those areas that can add value.' Like steel, the popularity of wooden decks is also associated with costs. A similar project built from composite materials can run you about 50 percent more. Lipford, meanwhile, highlights another key benefit of building a wooden deck. 'That's not heated and cooled space, but it is an opportunity to make you feel like you have a lot more space in your home than you actually have.' "

This advice from U.S. News and World Report is also echoed on the C.N.B.C. website, which rates a new deck as a smart financial investment: "A new deck is impossible to forget when potential buyers are touring a home, and for those costing about $15,000, they add about $11,000 to the asking price, for a ROI of 73 percent."

Here at Earthadelic, we completely agree with the experts on the financial benefits of adding or renovating a deck. Building a deck is a great idea. What the experts cannot accurately measure for you is the amount of enjoyment and relaxation that outdoor living can add to your life.

Living better in your own home can save time and expense travelling "to get away from it all". Your home can be a get-away. When spending more time with friends and family is crowded by a busy life, invest in better time with them in your new outdoor environment.

The Clabough Project

The Objective: To create an outdoor living area that offered the feel of a mountain stream, but also contained the elements of fire, lighting, and plenty of area for entertainment.

The Challenge:  The creation of a natural water feature in Tennessee is normally as easy going as a walk in the park, however, Mark and Judy Clabough had a flat yard to begin with. Yes, even in Tennessee some folks do have a flat yard and this is where the tremendous challenge comes in. Done poorly, a project like this looks worse than just contrived, it looks like gophers on steroids moved on to your property and the end result can be a major disappointment.

The Design Solution:  The creation of a natural water feature in Tennessee is normally as easy going as a walk in the park, however, Mark and Judy Clabough had a flat yard to begin with. Yes, even in Tennessee some folks do have a flat yard and this is where the tremendous challenge comes in. Done poorly, a project like this looks worse than just contrived, it looks like gophers on steroids moved on to your property and the end result can be a major disappointment.

The Installation Approach:  Step one, before any real construction could begin, was to take care of all primary drainage that was going to be changed through the terra forming process. The re-routing of downspouts, special consideration to all runoff in major rain events, and the strategic capture of water to serve the needs of newly installed landscaping were carefully executed. Next was the excavation to the proper sub-base which would hold the footers for the patio, seat wall, and fire pit. Tremendous care and concern was given to progressively lower elevations over the '130' of stream to be installed, with waterfalls along the way, so that when you entered the stream head, you were slowly brought to the nestled living areas with the feeling of invited comfort and serenity beside the placid and crystal clear pond, which gently surrounds and embraces the patio. Special attention was given to the streams meandering design and sound levels, which invoke incredibly peaceful feelings while still allowing quiet and intimate conversations. Finally the custom perennial gardens, shrubbery, and tress were installed to compete the look and feel of all that we naturally see and experience in these settings throughout our great state.

The Result:  The setting rivals many places we travel to in the mountains to escape the day to day stresses we all face. Mark and Judy are so excited to have this kind of experience right outside their back door and a local high school was so taken by the project that the senior class came and had their graduation pictures taken. The Clabough's have absolutely enjoyed and embraced their new life style, entertaining friends, family, and the new realization that the mountains are no longer an hour away, their just beyond the back door.
