DC Mayor, Muriel Bowser (center), and youth mayors Nyla Klusman and Ebony Johnson ('16) (right).
DC's New YOUTH Mayor

DBCR is proud to announce that Junior Class Member Ebony Johnson has been elected to a one-year term as one of two Youth Mayors in new DC Mayor Muriel Bowser's cabinet. Ebony has been serving as Ward 5's Youth Representative on the City Council and successfully ran for the Youth Mayor position so she could be an even greater advocate for youth in DC. The privilege of participating in the inauguration and swearing in of Mayor Bowser and the experience of the mayoral transition has been extremely fun and extremely challenging.  In her own words, Ebony notes that always having to be ready to speak at a meeting on any number of topics has given her "tough skin" and honed her leadership skills for the future where she hopes to become a Supreme Court Justice.   But until then you can catch a glimpse of Ebony in a commercial promoting the District's summer employment opportunities and planning her next run for office!
National Honor Society Inducts 19 of DBCR's Best and Brightest

Our community recently celebrated the inaugural induction of 19 Juniors and Seniors who exemplify the National Honor Society (NHS) pillars of service, leadership, character and scholarship, and who are role models both inside and outside the classroom.  George Salamanca ('15) teared up  as he spoke about what it meant to help found the NHS at DBCR and how proud he is to leave this legacy for fellow students to aspire to in the future. Under the leadership of Faculty member, Katie Wierenga, newly inducted members are already eagerly creating projects aimed at serving the local community.

First Round Acceptances Mailed & Second Round Interviews Set

79 acceptances have been granted so far to the future members of the Class of 2019, and as rolling admissions continue, don't miss out on the 2nd round of interviews now scheduled for Thursday, March 19th and Tuesday, March 24th from 4:15-6:45.  We're seeing an earlier trend in completed applications as the word has gotten out about DBCR's exciting program.  The Admissions team is expecting to be very close to next year's enrollment goal of more than 100 freshmen after this next round of interviews. For additional information on the upcoming interviews or the admissions process, contact a member of the Admissions staff here.

Winter Can't Stop Soccer

When the snow and ice have brought activity to a screeching halt in DC this winter, Faculty Member Rudi Feiler and five teams of energetic soccer players have brought their game indoors.  As a result of this highly successful student initiative, you can now find students vying for the ball on Sunday afternoons in DBCR's Savio Hall. The widely popular games of Futsal last only five fast-paced minutes and are played without refs, requiring the students to self-regulate when they commit fouls or have been fouled. The teams are a mix of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders and, as a result, the veteran players are watching the younger players' skills develop quickly.  For a full list of clubs and  activities keeping the students busy this season, visit our new website!
