NUUC Blog:  Give Thanks by Janice Partyka

I've experienced a special window into giving and generosity as a prior chair of our annual pledge drive. At Neighborhood, our annual pledge drive isn't just about raising money, though that is certainly important. It's also about members sharing how the church has sustained and deepened their lives. In the pledge drive I led, some spoke of the generosity of time and spirit they received from other members as they struggled through a difficult life event. Others told of how they have been enriched by the fellowship of the church, and some told of the fulfillment that came from helping the local community through our many outreach efforts.

This discussion series will focus on tensions in our culture that undercut people's abilities to learn from the sciences and at the same time from spiritual teachers and traditions. We will be delighted to learn from friends with strong science backgrounds and will urge them to explain their insights in ways the rest of us can understand.

The core reading, discussed in every meeting, is Deepak Chopra and Leonard Mlodinow, The War of the World Views: Science vs. Spirituality (2011).  Free. No registration necessary. Contact Jack Wills with question.

Buy a Holiday Gift for a Local Child in Need
winter-gift-holding.jpg
Sundays, November 22 & 29
Church Patio

We are on the patio this Sunday and hoping you will help make a child's holiday brighter. Through ACAC (Alliance for the Care of Abused Children), Neighborhood has adopted two local social workers with large caseloads of children who have been neglected or abused.  For many, our gifts will be the only presents these kids may receive at the holidays.  At the table on the patio, we have a board with post-it notes with items the children have requested.  Pick a request, whether it is for a soccer ball, art supplies, books, gift card or something else that catches your fancy,  then buy the item and bring it to the church office by December 6.  If you have any questions, please contact Janice Partyka
Alternative Gift Market Returns
Alternative_Gift
One Sunday Only:  December 13th
Ross Chapel

Tis the Season... to share a special Sunday to shop our UU values at this year's Alternative Gift Market.  Now for ONE SUNDAY ONLY join us for a festive and fun occasion to help our local friends such as Planned Parenthood, Friends In Dead, Young and Healthy and other groups who bring needed services and help to our neighbors.  Or you can give on a global scale to the projects from Alternative Gifts International.  From innovative agricultural  and health initiatives, projects empowering women in developing countries, and groups dedicated to improving the lives and education of children, you are certain to find creative and inspiring chances to touch lives and change the future.

These gifts are always appreciated by your recipients, and for the giver we offer an alternative to the stressful and hectic experience holiday shopping has become.  As always, we will be offering greeting cards....as well as a limited number of gift cards.  Shoppers are invited to stop by the Social Justice table to browse through the AGM catalogue and pick up a shopping list in the weeks before the market.  You can also get the shopping list on the church website.  So join us for the fun, the festivities, and a celebration of yet another wonderful year together after services December 13th. Give your friends and family a gift that makes a true difference in lives here in Pasadena and all over the world.    Please contact  Beth Colcord , Social Justice Coordinator, with any questions.
The Food Pantry at Friends In Deed

The Food Pantry at Friends In Deed serves supplemental food to hundreds of low-income and homeless households each week. Elderly, disabled, families, mentally ill, homeless people - all are made to feel welcome for supplemental food and emotional support. To support The Pantry, please bring unexpired, unopened, non-perishable food items to church and place them in the patio grocery cart.  Proteins, especially pop-top (peanut butter, tuna, chicken, chili, beef stew, dry beans), whole grains (pasta, oats, rice, cereal), and shelf-stable or powdered milk are most needed.  We do not collect perishable foods due to lack of appropriate storage space nor baby foods in glass containers due to health laws.  Please contact Beth Colcord, Social Justice Coordinator, with any questions.
