Margaret Kistinger
|
Margaret Kistinger of Harwich has been appointed Director of the Yarmouth Port Library. She replaces Librarian Leslie Altman, who is leaving the position.
Ms. Kistinger is a magna cum laude graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas College and holds an M.L.S. from Long Island University. Most recently she had been Assistant Director of the Snow Library in Orleans; previously she had been a reference and information services librarian at the New Milford Public Library in New Milford, Connecticut, and Director of the Pawling Free Library in Pawling, New York.
"The Trustees of Yarmouth Port Library have given me this wonderful opportunity to serve the needs of Yarmouth Port patrons and community. The staff and a host of volunteers work tirelessly to maintain a welcoming environment for all library users and I am delighted to be here."

 Looks like this is my last contribution to the Yardarm. As you now know, I am retiring as of September 1st in order to have more time with my family. I have so enjoyed my nearly three years as your Librarian. My favorite part of the job has been interacting with patrons, and I will miss you all. I won't be far away, however: I am only a few doors east on Route 6A, and I hope to see you all in the neighborhood. I will also be available as a substitute if the need arises, so occasionally, you may see me back behind the circulation desk. I know you will warmly welcome Margaret Kistinger, our new Director. You can read more about her elsewhere in the Yardarm.
In other news, the program committee has been planning a full lineup of programs for you in the fall, including art, music, science and more. The YPL is a community resource, and we hope you will come in for more than books and DVDs. I will continue to be a member of the YPL book group, which meets on the third Thursday of each month at 3:00 pm. Newcomers to the group are always welcome. For our September 17th meeting we are talking about The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant. At that meeting we will also make decisions about the next few books. Join us!
Just a reminder: right near the new books is posted a list of books that have been ordered for the next month. Likewise, a list of new DVDs is posted near that section.
Please check out the new items; many have waiting lists, but if you put your name in
early, you will be rewarded, as Yarmouth Port books and DVDs go to our patrons first. As always, if you have a suggestion for purchase, let us know.

 How come summer always goes so much faster than winter around here? It was so much fun to see all of our regulars and the summer visitors coming in wreathed in smiles - and so nice to have long, warm, sunny days. We enjoyed our visits from Trevor the Juggler and Marcus the Magician. But let's not dwell on what is past. Instead, let's look to what lies ahead:
Fall is a delightful season on the Cape and September is just about my favorite month here. The temperatures are still comfortable, the roads and beaches are less crowded and there are no fees for parking at most beaches!
Fall also means it's time for Lapsit Storytime once again. We will be starting on Friday, September 11
th
at 10:30 AM. This group is for babies and toddlers and involves stories, songs, and finger plays with social time immediately following each session. We need increased attendance numbers in order to keep this program going so, please, do join us.
Beginning on September 4
th,
we will once again present Generations!, a music and movement program bringing young children and older adults together. Generations! is led by World Musician, Denya LeVine, and happens on the first Friday of the month at 10:30 AM down the street at the Congregational Church Hall. Everyone is invited - and welcome!

I am pleased to announce that we have a new Library Director, Margaret Kistinger. I am sure many of you have already met Margaret but if you have not, please come in and say hello. We will certainly miss Leslie Altman but she assures me she will not abandon us and will still be coming in to help us out in any way she can. We enjoyed Leslie's time with us and we wish her well as she ventures further into retirement. I know she will have no problem filling in her time!
Believe it or not, the YPL is planning ahead to the holiday season and our third annual sale of beautiful hand knit hats, mittens and other items. I know some of our talented knitters have already begun their projects and those of you who have not - time is wasting!!
The summer has been busy with a successful book and plant sale behind us. That is most definitely a group effort and my thanks go out to all of the members of our dedicated Library community who make this event the huge success it is every year. We depend on this sale because it is our biggest fund raiser. I know we always emphasize the "book" part of the sale but plants are a huge seller also. Many thanks to the dedicated plant ladies including Mary Dee and Mary Ellen Annese as well as Judy O'Brien and Sally Hockenbury.
Be on the lookout for the beginning of our program season. The committee has been working on some great ideas for all ages. With few exceptions, the programs are free of charge with free will donations graciously accepted.
Be sure to check out the emails from the Library - there is always something going on!

| Low Vision Reader |

 The Yarmouth Port Library now has a low vision reader. The machine allows magnification of printed materials that are projected onto a screen similar to a desktop computer monitor. The machine is at a desk near the circulation area and is available for patrons to use when
the library is open. Staff is available to assist patrons who want to use the machine.

Annual Book and Plant Sale

The annual book and plant sale was a wonderful success with receipts of $3,016. Thank you all who donated books and volunteered your time and effort. Once again we also thank the campers from Camp Wingate/Kirkland and Boy Scout Troop 50 of Yarmouth Port who helped carry up all those books; Station Avenue Stop & Shop and South Yarmouth Shaw's for food donations; and the Barnstable County Sheriff's Dept. for the tent loan and set-up. It was a great effort by everyone!
Now we start all over again!
We will begin accepting books in September. We really appreciate donations of clean, saleable books. We accept fiction and nonfiction titles, cookbooks, travel books, children's books, etc. We also resell CDs and DVDs. Donations of 2015 titles may be put into circulation at the library. We do not accept textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopedias or any books with any sign of dirt or mold. If you have a large number of books to donate, please call ahead as we have limited space for donations.

| Missing Library Portraits |

During my research at the Yarmouth Port Library on the portraits hanging in the Library, I discovered that two portraits given to the library and acknowledged by the then Library Board of Trustees are currently missing.
Carola Swift donated a portrait of Charles Francis Swift in 1904, a year after his death. Mr. Swift was born in 1825 in Falmouth, lived in Yarmouth, and died in 1903. He was long term editor of the Register newspaper and an author of books on local history.
Melinda Taylor gave a portrait of Isaac Thacher to the library in 1919. Mr. Thacher was born in Yarmouth in 1808 and died in Boston in 1883.He was a prominent merchant in Boston, known for his general benevolence and a trustee of numerous banking institutions.
If you know the whereabouts of either of these portraits, or have other information about them, please notify the Yarmouth Port Library.

In March of 1866, a committee was formed to start a subscription library in the Town of Yarmouth. Their work was the beginning of the Yarmouth Port Library you know today. The evolution of the Library and the library building is an interesting story. We are presenting various aspects of how the Library came to be what it is and some, we think, interesting tidbits you may not be aware of culminating in a celebration of the Library's 150th anniversary in 2016.
The Library Portraits
We hope that you have noticed the portraits of 19th Century community leaders activein the formation of the Yarmouth Port Library that hang in the Library. We have prepared brief biographical sketches of these community leaders for your enjoyment and enlightenment.
The Library continues to investigate the authorship and documentation of the gifts to the Library of these portraits. If you have any information you think would be of interest on this subject, please contact the Library.

Established in 2011 by Greg Bilezikian, son of Doreen and Chuck Bilezikian, the Just Picked Yarmouth Port store occupies the buildings that were home to his parents' original Christmas Tree Shop. (Without the Bilezikians' extraordinarily generous support of the Library's Preservation Fund in 2009, it is unlikely that we would have survived.)

As many of you know, the Yarmouth Port Library is not an ordinary town library. Though it is open to everyone and we encourage members and non-members alike to use the library, it is operated by a private non-profit organization, the Yarmouth Library Association. The Association is comprised of a group of corporators and governed by a board of trustees and officers.
