Havana Son duo
energizes  CMS crowd
at Mabry Center

As part of Carrollton Middle School's celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the sultry sounds of a tropical paradise came to mind when the pulsing rhythms and sweet melodies of Havana Son energized CMS students at the Mabry Center for the Arts Oct. 6.

The duo hosted two assemblies - fourth and fifth grade in one and sixth grade in the other - exposing students to geographic and cultural themes of Latin America.

Havana Son was formed by the husband-and-wife team of Rene and Llilian Herrera, both of Cuban descent and award-winning professional musicians and vocalists.

Havana Son played authentic Latin rhythms such as Salsa, Merengue, Son, Cha Cha, boleros, bachata, vallenato, cumbia and more to the delight of CMS students. Click here to see a video and learn more about the performance.

CMS science teacher Gwen Benson is one of the most prolific "Gold Mine" contributors. Here is a photo of students working on STEM projects.
Add your own nuggets
to the CCS Gold Mine
Have you checked out Carrollton City Schools' new "social neighborhood" that is linked to the school district's home page? Launched just a couple of weeks ago, the "Gold Mine" already is full of quick snippets capturing dynamic school activity, like the photo of the sixth grade team on Homecoming. Click the icon above to see more content, all driven by the hashtag #trojangold. Most of the activity so far has been produced by Carrollton City Schools employees. We would love to have you add your own experiences to this archive! Just remember to add the hashtag ...  #trojangold
During conferences, we will ask for your feedback
Student success is attained when great parents, great teachers and a great community work in concert to create dynamic learning experiences for children.

Ensuring this partnership is working well compels us to ask you for feedback. During CMS parent-teacher conferences this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 13-15, we will ask for your feedback on what we do well and what we could do better. The online survey is very short and will only take a couple of minutes. Your answers will be confidential and will not be shared with teachers at an individual teacher or student level.

A $500 gift certificate to the Trojan Nation Store awaits a randomly drawn winner from the parents/guardians who participate. The drawing will be on  Friday, Oct. 30 . Good luck!
