Odor Issues
Odor Control Update
Over the past few weeks, the Solid Waste Management Division has received comments regarding odors from residents neighboring the South Wake Landfill.
Due to the completion of  the expansion of the landfill gas collection system, some temporary relief in wind direction (projected by Weather Underground), and the upcoming acquisition of odor neutralizing technology there should be an improvement in odors originating from the landfill before the end of this year.
If you continue to experience odor problems please notify us immediately. Doing so enables us to better identify the cause, and find the best course of action.

Wildlife at the Landfill
Feathery Friends call us "Home"
An abundance of bird species live at the landfill and depending on the time of year you visit you will be able to see Bald Eagles, Hawks, Wild Turkeys, Turkey Vultures, Black Vultures and Lake Gulls in large numbers.

Currently, we have a family of Wild Turkeys roaming the landfill and the gulls are on their way down from the Great Lakes and will start to arrive the first few weeks of November. They stay for the winter and then depart in March.

The gulls attract our National bird the Bald Eagle which is a regular sighting at the landfill during the months of December thru March. Register here for a public tour of the landfill to get the chance to see one up close.

Turning Trash into Renewable Energy
Expansion of the Landfill Gas-to-Energy Facility
Landfill gas created at the  South Wake Landfill is collected by a complex well and piping system before being moved to the landfill gas-to-energy facility where it is c onverted into electricity  to power local homes and businesses.

In addition, the landfill gas-to-energy facility is able to destroy the harmful greenhouse gasses produced when organic materials biodegrade as well as control odors.

The landfill gas-to-energy facility at South Wake Landfill was recently expanded to be able to produce up to six Megawatts of continuous power. Six Megawatts is enough electricity to power as many as 12,000 homes (off peak). To learn more click here.
