THE BRIDGE TO SECONDARY SUCCESS * VOLUME 3 ISSUE 4/ NOVEMBER 4, 2015
I teach, UTeach, we all teach!

These CMS sixth graders recently participated in a discovery STEM "Math" lesson presented by the University of West Georgia UTeach program. Students were given different shapes and told to make a tessellation pattern with them. They were not told what tessellations were beforehand, yet by the end of the lesson all students were able to make a design. Science teacher Gwen Benson works with two different groups of students in the UTeach program, all who are math and science majors who are thinking about becoming high school math/science teachers. They write hands-on lesson plans and teach them to Mrs. Benson's classes. Just another quality example of great community partnerships!
Recycling boxes
placed in cafeteria through Nov. 13

CMS will have collection boxes in the cafeteria until Nov. 13 for recycling drink pouches, snack and chip bags and Lunchable kits. Please remind your children to recycle these items.

Teachers may also place writing instruments (working and non-working: pens and pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers and marker caps, permanent markers and permanent marker caps) in the collection boxes.

Keep Carroll Beautiful, our local Keep America Beautiful affiliate, is partnering with CMS to raise awareness of the value of recycling.

CMS leadership  presents at DOE  conference

CMS Principal Dr. Andre Touchard and CMS Assistant Principal Mrs. Laura Malmquist were the keynote speakers at the Georgia Department of Education Instructional Leadership Academy held in Athens Oct. 29, a conference for principals and their supervisors of each Focus, Priority, and Opportunity school throughout the state of Georgia. They explained Carrollton Middle School's processes that were instrumental in assisting CMS in exiting the Focus school list.

"I cannot express how thankful I am that they were, without hesitation, willing to accept the invitation to present," said Monica McDaniel, Title I School Improvement specialist for West Georgia RESA, who arranged the presentation. "They, by far, were a representation of the Carrollton City School Systems Gold Standard."
School system looking
for  Christmas sponsors
The Carrollton City School System is looking for sponsors for this year's Christmas program to help needy families. Last year, sponsors ensured a wonderful Christmas for more than 800 children.

Sponsors will receive profiles of their assigned families that include parents' names, children's names, ages, sizes and special wants and needs. Social workers and counselors have screened these families and found them to be in need of assistance.

Sponsor forms and more information are available on the school system's website. Sponsor forms need to be returned to Carrollton Middle School, 151 Tom Reeve Dr., by Monday, Nov. 16.

For more information, contact Ryan Scroggin at CMS at 770-830-0997 Ext. 1717, or e-mail him at [email protected].
