Southeast Texas Damage Prevention Council Safety Day

Texas811 had a big presence at the Southeast Texas Damage Prevention Council Safety Day in Pasadena. Our booth was filled with people getting the latest info on our mobile apps and picking up safety material. Among attendees was our ambassador, Digby.

HCA de San Antonio Charity Golf Tournament

We were also present at the Hispanic Contractors Association de San Antonio 16th annual charity golf classic in San Antonio. The event raised money for scholarships for students pursuing careers in the construction industry - and of course, also highlighted the "call 811" message.

October 2015 Newsletter
Mike's Message
Hello, Texas811 members!
Wow, October was a busy month for Texas811. It started in Pearsall, which was such a big event we covered it in the last newsletter. And the movement never stopped as our member base helped us continue to spread the safe digging message across Texas. Here are some of the highlights of what we did and where we were, as compiled by our Image and Media groups.
I hope you had a very pleasant October, and that the upcoming holiday season brings happiness and joy to you and yours.
Sincerely,

Mike Losawyer
President, Texas811
  JimBob Sims Leading the Charge

You can't miss that big cowboy hat - or the big man under it. That's Director of Damage Prevention JimBob Sims at the San Angelo Roping Fiesta. The Cinch Roping Fiesta is held annually the last full weekend in October. An event rich in history, it is the longest running stand-alone roping event of its kind. Droves of ropers and roping enthusiasts pile into San Angelo for Fiesta weekend - and JimBob was there, too, to talk about safe digging practices. Texas811 was a sponsor of the event again this year.

That JimBob Sims gets around....he was later seen at the Texas Society of Professional Surveyors 64th annual convention and tech expo in Dallas.
Corpus Christi Safety Day Seminar

We also manned a booth at the Corpus Christi Safety Day Seminar. The event focused on issues and regulations regarding excavation work in Texas. The City of Corpus Christi-Nueces County Local Emergency Planning Committee, Texas811 and the Gulf Coast Damage Prevention Council were the hosts of the event. How important are these safety day events? "There is always the one excavator out there who either won't call 811, or won't wait for the lines to be marked. Digging blind with a backhoe in Texas is just asking for trouble," says Jaime Medina, Damage Prevention Manager for the Gulf Coast Damage Prevention Council. "The LEPC and Texas811 want contractors and excavators to know that the free call to 811 is always the first step toward safe digging."

Round Rock Vista Oaks Safety Day

And we couldn't pass up teaming with Atmos Energy for a safety day in Round Rock at the Vista Oaks HOA community center grounds. Williamson County Emergency Responders were on hand showing off equipment and vehicles, there were kid friendly interactive and educational displays, a jump house and coffee and donuts to fuel it all. Adults (and kids) learned how NOT to dig a hole in the ground to plant that mailbox, tree or fence. A safe digging demo showed homeowners the right way to call 811 FIRST to get underground utilities located for free BEFORE digging. Excavating without calling 811 first is a fineable offense in Texas - don't be guilty and don't hit a buried line.

We were busy at home in the Texas811 center as well

October call volume was pretty busy for us. We took 251,578 inbound locate requests, which ended up generating 1,258,722 notices to our members.

A pink-out marked Texas811 support for breast cancer awareness during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

And Halloween remains one of our favorite days. The entire staff dressed up as characters from favorite Disney films! Happy Halloween from the Contact Center!

Texas811 Image Manager Shakheana Fields and Image coordinator Lauren Losawyer attended the Mark-It Madness committee meetings for One Calls of America in Arizona. Among items under discussion - national and regional 811 campaigns, continuing education ideas, and give away items.

Finally, you may have known that our famous Swag'n was broken into a couple of times back toward the end of summer. (Apparently some people just can't wait to get their hands on Texas811 hamburgers, hot dogs and snow cones!) The damage was deemed irreparable, and a new Swag'n trailer was procured. We just got it back from being wrapped - and it's ready for the road again!

That puts a wrap on this month's newsletter. If you've got an event coming up that we should give a shout out for, send an email.

Until next time, dig safe!

Sincerely,

Texas811
