State Honors Musicians
Last Thursday 12 of our HUHS music department's student musicians participated in the Wisconsin School Music Association's Honors Concerts at the Overture Center in Madison. These singers and instrumentalists were selected last February by audition to participate in an honors camp during the summer and return to perform for attendees of the Wisconsin Music Educators' Association Conference in October. We are very proud and grateful that HUHS had so many students that were selected to participate in this exceptional opportunity. These musicians are among the best in the entire state.
Congratulations and pictured from front left to right: Andrew Stowe, Andrea O'Bryon, Meghan Boelkow, Alyssa Higley. Back left to right: Ella Justman, Sadie Stelter, Aubrie Faust, John Michalak, Noah Buhle, Matthew Gehrman, Thomas Popies. Missing: Brendan Anderson.

Spanish 4 Classes Celebrate el Dia de lost Muertos
Students in Mrs. Fendt's Spanish 4 classes created altars, honoring deceased loved ones, to celebrate "el Dia de los Muertos."  Students chose family members, friends, neighbors, pets, famous people, etc. and included a picture and then other items that represented the deceased.  In conjunction with the altar, students wrote a poem in Spanish, in the style of Pablo Neruda, a poet who was studied in our unit.

AP Art History
After learning about early Christian and Islamic architecture, students in Ms. Kieckhaefer's AP Art History got creative by designing their own religious structure...a fusion of a longitudinal church, centrally-planned church, and mosque.

For Parents of Children Receiving SSI
The PROMISE initiative is intended to improve services for youth SSI (Social Security Supplemental Security Income) recipients and their families. The services help youth recipients achieve better outcomes, including graduating from high school ready for college and a career, completing postsecondary education and job training, and obtaining competitive employment in an integrated setting. As a result, these youth SSI recipients can achieve long-term reductions in reliance on SSI.

Powder Puff Donation to the Hartford Food Pantry
The HUHS Student Council recently presented the Hartford Food Pantry with a monetary donation of $2270.50 and almost 400 canned food items. The Food Pantry was the beneficiary of the annual Powder Puff football games held during the homecoming week.  This year, in efforts to raise more money and food donations, the Student Council expanded the event to include all grade levels.  The JV game featured the Sophomore class versus the Freshman class, and the premier Varsity game featured the Junior class versus the Senior class.

Trick or Can
In October, during neighborhood trick or treat's, Hartford Union High School's FBLA and DECA members participated in the third annual trick or treat for canned goods. The week before Trick or Treating, members dropped off a note and bag for collecting the goods in their neighborhoods. Members then dressed up in costumes and went from house to house in their neighborhood collecting canned goods to donate to the Hartford Food Pantry. The outcome this year was the best so far, with members collecting over 1,000 cans, which more than doubled last years numbers. Brianna Weiss participated in the event and said, "It feels good to know that we were able to collect that many cans and that we are able to make a difference in our community." The organization is looking forward to doing this event again next year and continuing to grow in the amount of participants and canned goods collected.
