Chayei Sarah
After Avraham buries his beloved wife, he turns his focus to the long-term welfare of his son and sends his servant on a match-making expedition to find a wife for Yitzchak. In the first instruction he gives his servant, Avraham commands that this mission not be a local one; instead, the servant must travel to his master's homeland, Aram Naharayim, to find the perfect match. What a strange directive! Hadn't Hashem told Avraham decades earlier to leave his birthplace and homeland to settle in the land of Canaan? If Avraham wanted to protect his son from the lure of idol worship, those in Aram Naharayim held similar idolatrous beliefs to those in Canaan; why does Avraham prefer the location of his youth?

Earlier in the parashah Avraham identifies himself as both a stranger and a settler simultaneously.  While he sees himself as a citizen of Canaan, Avraham also recognizes that he engages in the culture and life in the new country through an immigrant's lens. The viewpoint of the stranger coupled with the perspective of the citizen allows him to view and evaluate Canaanite life as both an outsider and an insider. Avraham strikes a balanced view of the world around him through these opposite identities. Yitzchak does not see Canaan through the same lenses; he grew up in Canaan and can only see the culture around him as familiar and comfortable. Avraham realizes that in order to perpetuate the balanced outlook that his descendants will need to grow spiritually, he needs to find a wife for Yitzchak who can also regard herself as a stranger and a settler, someone who has taken the same spiritual journey that he himself embarked upon.

Shabbat Shalom,

SAFETY AND SECURITY ARE TOP PRIORITIES

We value the learning and safety of our students! During our school hours of 8:00 AM-4:15 PM, we are keeping our Lower School building secure. We remind parents to please visit the Security and Check-In Desk in the main Atrium to get a visitor's pass if a visit to the Lower School building is necessary. Adults without a pass will be directed back to the desk to first get a pass. To maintain this security, during school hours, we invite parents who want to be in the Lower School after drop off or before pick-up to visit our main Atrium in the Administration building. Yiddishe Kup is open at these times if you want to purchase a coffee, tea, or baked treat.  Thank you as we work together to maintain the security of our children!
SCIENCE AND TORAH CONNECTIONS

The early פרקים (chapters) of שמואל ב'(Samuel II) is the transition between the dynasty of Shaul and David. Opportunists and defenders of particular dynasties seek both power and retribution resulting in several murders. The unique ? of this section is the striking amount of assassinations that are committed by stabbing an individual in the fifth rib area. That commonality begs the question, "Why?"

In order to understand the significance of this locale, students in 7th Navi looked both at the interpretations of the Talmud and modern day anatomy.  Mrs. Ticker used both slides and Skeleton Steve to demonstrate the vital organs that lay beneath this area.

A special thank you to Mrs. Mickel, Director of Lower School, who taught the Lower School how to sing Hatikvah in sign language.

KINDERGARTEN BRACHOT LEARNING IS HANDS ON

Our Kindergartners have been learning about the blessings over food (brachot), and focused this week on "haadama" (fruits and vegetables that grow from the ground) and" haeitz" (those which grow from a tree). They have planted lima beans and observed their growth, arranged edible "haadama men" and "haeitz faces" and even got to juice some fruits and vegetables as an introduction to the bracha "shehakol." Learning is fun here in Kindergarten!

MORE BROCCOLI PIE, PLEASE!

Last week for our weekly poetry memorization, third graders memorized "More Disgusting Broccoli Pie." Hanna Henkin's mother Ruthie actually made a broccoli pie for all the children to taste. It was delicious and we all "WANT A LITTLE MORE!"

CUTTING CANDY- THE 5th GRADE WAY

Twizzler Fractions - In 5th Grade math, each group was given a package containing 4 sticks of Twizzlers.  Instructions were to divide the candy equally according to the number of people stated in the problem (3, 7, or 9).  Methods of calculating were discussed after the group work.  Each group was headed by a surgeon wearing sterile gloves who cut the Twizzlers to precise measurements using a scalpel (plastic knife), allowing the measured portions to be edible upon completion of the task.

5TH GRADE SINGS AT THE LEGACY

The 5th grade visited the Legacy today to entertain the residents. This grade visited last year and met Yael, one of the residents who was a Hebrew teacher in Germany over 60 years ago at a school called Yavneh.

When Mrs. Sabo saw Yael today, she reminded her that this grade visited last year and Yael was overcome with excitement. She spoke to the students in Hebrew and explained to them that she too was in a Jewish school in Germany so many years ago and now here she is listening to the Hebrew music of students in a Jewish day school and they all broke out in song with "Am Yisrael Chai". The students enjoyed visiting with her and the other residents too.
