Homecoming Friday;
donations drive
still under way

Friday is Homecoming with the Trojans facing region rival Fayette County that night.

The day starts off with a pep rally at 10 in the morning in Grisham Stadium. There, the 2015 Homecoming King will be announced.

Following lunch, around 12:30, the Homecoming Parade will meander through campus, creating excitement for all as every Trojan, Pre-K through grade 12 and beyond, will line the edges of Ben Scott Boulevard to cheer on every freshman, sophomore, junior and senior involved in the festivities.

And, of course, during halftime at the game, the 2015 Homecoming Queen will be announced. During pregame, Sweethearts and their escorts will be recognized.

 As in years past, CHS is collecting personal hygiene items to be donated to local charity groups for distribution in the community.

The drive includes participation from all Carrollton students. Below is the breakdown of how donations for the Homecoming drive will be organized:
* Freshmen - Shampoo, conditioner; partner grades 7th & 8th.
* Sophomores - Bar soap, dish soap; partner grades 5th & 6th.
Juniors - Toothbrushes, toothpaste; partner grades Pre-K, 3rd & 4th.
Seniors - Toilet paper; partner grades K, 1st & 2nd.

Online resources
to keep you informed

To help you stay on top of everything going on at CHS, we've added a live announcements feed you can access via the link below. You can also access the announcements from the News and Events tab or the Calendar button on the CHS home page.
With our new website design, we've also been able to integrate Google functionality in our new online calendar where you not only can view, but add items to your own calendar.

And, in addition to all that, we've created a CHS Counseling & Career Center website with information that is especially important for juniors and seniors.

SAT Word
of the Week

Each week Carrollton High School features an SAT "Word of the Week" to help students build their vocabulary in preparation of the test. Here's the latest:

Ostentatious
(os-ten-tey-shuh s)

As used on the SAT, its meaning is: describing a pretentious display .
Here it is in a sentence:  While Carrollton offers a wonderful fireworks display every 4th of July, it is nowhere near as ostentatious as the fireworks display offered by our nation's capital.

The traveling Legacy Sword Trophy was hand sculpted and cast in bronze by recent UWG graduate, Daniel McMillan.

Trojan Band hosts
first competition event,
'Legacy of Champions'

Though the Trojan Band has participated in hundreds of marching competitions over the years, Band Director Chris Carr and his staff, along with strong support from band boosters, will host "Legacy of Champions" in Grisham Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 10.

"We are please to welcome a host of local and regional bands in competition, as well as our own Carrollton Trojan Band, Valdosta State University and the University of West Georgia in exhibition," said CHS Band Director Chris Carr.

"A variety of vendors, concession stands full of fan favorites, and plenty of parking will help ensure an enjoyable day at Historic Grisham Stadium," he continued. "The event will come to a crescendo that evening with an awards ceremony highlighted by the presentation of our massive, one-of-a-kind, traveling Grand Championship Trophy, the Legacy Sword Trophy."

The massive bronze trophy features a rendition of the Sword of Troy and a Greek shield representing the honor and valor that are displayed every time the Trojans take the field, he added.

"The trophy will be presented annually to the best overall judged band at our competition to adorn its band room until the following summer, when it will be reclaimed by the Trojan Nation and placed back in the arena to await its next victor," said Carr. "An engraved plaque with the previous year's winner will be added to the trophy annually as a testimony of each Grand Champion's accomplishment."

Gates open at 12:30 with performances beginning at 3 p.m. The event will end about 10 p.m. following awards presentations. Admission is $8 per person, with children 10 and under free. Both paid and free parking options will be available.

For more information about the competition and performance schedule, visit the legacyofchampions.net website.

PLC CORNER
Academic flexibility can create prestigious recognitions

The Performance Learning Center is proud of Michael Sudduth.

Michael, currently in his junior year, came to the PLC in eighth grade. While attending the PLC his academic performance afforded him the opportunity to take several AP, art and other courses on the campus of Carrollton High School, demonstrating the PLC's flexibility to customize education for every student.

Over the years he repeatedly expressed an interest in art. With his creativity, artistic talents, and dedication, Michael has most definitely honed his artistic craft. He has been nominated by CHS art teacher, Mr. Jake Richardson, for the prestigious Governor's Honors Program. This program offers students the opportunity to participate in a four-week, summer residential program where they will be exposed to cultural and social enrichment activities designed to help them become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.

Congratulations, Michael, for receiving a nomination for this prestigious honor!
